How do I resolve a Kernel Panic

I have an open case with Apple as I'm still covered under my AppleCare, but their offices are closed right now, so I wanted to see if I coud get some answers from the community.
I have had roughly 6 kernel panics in the last month, only after upgrading to Mountain Lion. Over the phone with Apple, the advisor had me reinstall OS X using the recovery partition. We didn't erase data from the drive, just reinstalled the OS.
I could only find two Kernel Panic logis in the console and they are below.

Please let me know what the best next step would be. I'll call Apple tomorrow anyways, but some insight would be nice.
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for the help.
I don't know which software the first one is associated with
I need the Telestream Audio Driver for Screenflow
I don't know which software is associated with Soundflower
I never installed SyncMate,
I can get rid of Boom, but it doesn't have a default uninstaller
I don't know what the sixth one is
I can get rid of Hands Off! with it's default uninstaller
I don't have a Blackberry device, so I never remeber intalling BB Desktop, how can I remove this?
Thanks for the help

How do I fix a "Kernel Panic"?

A Kernel Panic is usually caused by some sort of tampering with your computers files that allow it to function.  If you know of any system folders that you may have altered recently, try to revert them back to their original format.  If this does not work, back up you hard drive and reboot from the software disk that came with your MacBook.  This should work, otherwise I would just take it in to apple to either restore the system files or give you a new computer.  Hope this helps!  I had the same problem a few months ago and one of these solutions should work for you.

  • How do I interpret a kernel panic log?  (Here's one)

I apologize if there have been too many threads on kernel panics (and I'm adding to them). But Monday had my first one with my 2.5DP G5 POwerMac. I hadn't done anything unusual, only replying to an email, when the main screen greyed out, requesting that I restart using the power button.
Ten days ago, I installed Leopard. I also ran Disc Warrior, cleaned the preferences, etc. just to clean things up. I have the keyboard attached to the Belkin USB hub, instead of my usual direct connection to the box.
So, here is the log file as it reads. Can someone point out what the culprit may be? I have since run Apple Hardware Test, everything passed (running a total of 2.5GB Crucial memory). Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chet-
The first line after "backtrace" identifies the location, and describes the process involved at the time of the panic.
In this case, "com.apple.iokit.IOATABlockStorage" is indicated. This can be caused by a bad hard drive, internal or external, corrupt kernel in the OS BSD, or by a problem with the ATA controller on the logic board.
The panic occurred during data access "Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 1): 0x300 - Data access" which resulted in the CPU stumbling over some bad instruction occurring during the data access. "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task" indicates the problem to be/have occurred at the root level of the system.
Determining whether the problem is hardware or software based, is the problem, and can take quite a bit of effort.
To troubleshoot, the AHT was a good start. Would recommend running Rember just to get a second opinion on the RAM.
Of course, you need to disconnect all external devices, except keyboard, mouse and monitor. If you use an external hard drive, definitely disconnect it, run for a while, and see if the panic occurs again. If panics still occur, you need to look at the internal drive.
Running the computer in Safe Mode, or in a new user account, are ways of confirming whether or not the problem is software based. If panics occur in Safe mode, hardware is more than likely the culprit. Same goes with a new user account.
Since the Leopard install is relatively new, and, I assume that you installed on the old, original hard drive in your Mac, it may be worth while to zero the drive (one pass) and reinstall the OS. Especially if you installed over Tiger, or previous OS version, there could be a bit or two on the hard drive that isn't right, raising the potential for kernel panic. That said, a drive, even zeroed, can cause problems if failing.
Since it has only happened once, you may just want to take a "wait and see" approach. If a panic occurs in the near future, note the log (well done) and begin the trouble shooting.

  • Why and how can Premiere cause a kernel panic? (at all, much less as often as I'm seeing)

I get kernel panics disturbingly often with Premiere CC 2014 (and multiple versions of OS X---both Mavericks and Yosemite). Trying to render moves on an oversized still or feathered masking color correction seem to be common causes, and I suspect OpenCL hardware acceleration is related.
But regardless of the specific causes, I'm curious about the fact that Premiere seems to be the only app on my Retina MacBook Pro that causes kernel panics as far as I can tell. Is that due to the kernel extensions needed for OpenCL hardware acceleration? How can Premiere even access the internals of OS X so deeply that it can cause kernel panics in the first place? Most apps that crash, just crash and don't take down the machine with them.

The RAM needs specs as shown below.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

  • How to diagnose my recurring kernel panic?

My MacBook Air (Mid 2012) running 10.9.1 is now having recurring kernel panics.
They all are in the same kernel extension:  com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily
Below is an example of the output from the system diagnostic logs.  It has happened 5 times in the last week and once before that.  The pace of the panics also seems to be accelerating.  I did get a full TImeMachine backup of the system so I don't think I'll lose anything but this is the fourth time I have had to take this machine in.  First two times for SSD corruption issues, then they managed to mis-install the motherboard so one USB port was no longer useful.
Can I get Apple to give me a new machine with all these issues?  Or am I just unlucky?
    Thanks in advance,
    Charlie

  • How to stop a recurring kernel panic?

Hello everyone.  I'm hoping that someone can help me diagnose a kernel panic.  My system has been crashing for a couple of months now.  It will run just fine, but when I leave it alone for any length of time it always crashes.  When I return to the system I get the message stating that my computer restarted because of a problem.  Can anyone help me diagnose?  The panic.log file is below.  Thank you!!!!

I would start by uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus and seeing that helps.
It does no good on a Mac. It is also one of the likely causes for kernel panics.

  • How Can I Prevent This Kernel Panic?

I have encountered kernel panics during normal usage of my iBook G4. I figured out the kernel panic occurs whenever I select a new wireless network in my Airport menu of available networks. Upon restart, I looked at the log, posted here:

I'm not excellent with computers and hardly know anything about coding, but I'm thinking "ATI Radeon 8500", my current graphics card, is what is causing the kernel panic. Am I correct? If so, what can be done about this problem, short of buying a new computer or card?

    Hello viper14400,
Still Panicking? If so here are a few things in no particular order that you can check.
See if your Airport Extreme card has a loose connection:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iBook-G4-12-Inch-800-MHz-1-2-GHz-A irPort-Extreme-Card/154/1
Remove your 1 GB stick of Ram and see if it still panics:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iBook-G4-12-Inch-800-MHz-1-2-GHz-R AM/156/1
From disc 1 of your original install discs run the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
I believe some programmer from Apple a long time ago put that ATIRadeon8500(4.1.8) in just to
reference a generic video card. Don't really know because I have never dealt with Kernel Panic
before. If you look top left of screen>apple>about this Mac>More Info>Hardware>Graphics/Displays
I believe you'll see you have a +ATI Mobility Radeon 9200+ and I hope that isn't what is giving you
problems because it is integrated to the Logic Board and would require a Logic Board Replacement/
    Buy Another Computer Fix.
If nothing else at least my reply will move you from page 13 to the top of page 1 for a while where
someone like cornelius, Lyssa or Niel may be able to offer some help.
Good Luck and Happy New Year,

  • How Do I Resolve Constant Kernal Panics?

I need help troubleshooting what is going on with my iMac.
We've been getting sporatic KPs since about Oct. 22.  We have not been able to use our computer since yesterday, because looking at it the wrong way causes the black screen of death.  I've looked at the reports, and I cannot tell if it is software or if there is some hardware hookup that is causing the issue.  We installed Microsoft Office in September.  We have several devices that we hook up (all of them are unplugged, now) - our camera, iPod, and Kindle - all of which we have had for a while.  We have a backup HD that we use with Time Machine, that also has been a part of our set up for over two years.  The one thing I discovered today, is that the software had not been updated to 10.7.  Thinking that may be the cause, I rebooted in safe mode, downloaded the software and then restarted.  I got the message that the update could not be expanded and the download may be corrupted.  Add to all this: I had to restore my iTunes library from the Time Machine twice in the last two months.  There is a lot going on here.   I'm not looking for any magic solutions (although that would be nice), just maybe a few more things I should do and/or look at before resigning myself to spend the dough on computer repair (hate to do that if its not a hardware issue).
The first KP runs like this:

  • How do i fix my kernel panic

My macbook wont go past the apple logo when the grey screen with the notification to restart the computer is needed, and everytime it is, it comes back up. I was updating quite a few things when this happened so i bet that is the cause. I dont have the Lion disc because i downloaded it from the app store when it came out so i cannot reboot. I tried re installing and it wont and i cannot use my external because itd erase stuff on there that i dont have on my mac if i rebooted lion off that. Please help me!

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Kernel panics seem to be solved...but why / how?

    Hi
I have a G5 imac and was experiencing regular kernel panic problems - very frustrating!
I tried the various tips available on this forum and elsewhere but without much effect.
I had also been suffering slow internet speeds on my Virgin Media cable service - using Airport Extreme wireless.
The Virgin Media engineer visited and replaced my cable modem / Airport Extreme with a new Superhub (combined modem / wireless router).
This sorted out my speed issues as I had hoped AND it seems to have resolved the kernel panic problem.
Previously, the problem had been happening at least once a day (usually on start up) and sometimes many times a day - to the point where I had decided the iMac had to be replaced!
Since the installation of the Superhub a month ago I've not had a single problem - and have been enjoying my iMac again.  Maybe this is a coincidence - but I doubt it.
When I was researching the kernel panic problem I don't remember seeing any mention of slow internet / modem / router problems as a possible cause.
Can anybody tell me if they have an explanation for this?  I wonder if it might be useful for others who are experiencing a similar problem.
    Many thanks

Kernel panics take work to track down.  You have to do it yourself, because they can be caused by hardware, software, or a combination of the two.  I once had a MBP that would get them about once a month.  Because they were so infrequent, I just couldn't find out why it did it,  so I followed this diagnostic list:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Sorry, but we can't give you the easy "just click this and move that" fix.

Hardware test finding a problem is a good indication of a problem existing. Hardware test not finding a problem is not a given that no problem exists.
Many kernel panics are due to hardware problems. Since you are finding this with two different operating systems it would suggest this is a hardware rather than a software issue.
You can run AHT in looped mode for a more extensive test of hardware.

  • Persistent kernel panics

For almost two months, I've been trying to resolve a kernel panic issue with a MacBook Pro purchased 6/06. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Here are the logs of the two most-recent kernel panics (one of which occurred when the user woke the MacBook from sleep; the other may have occurred during a startup, but I'm unsure):

More details: Most if not all of this MacBook Pro's kernel panics have occurred either during startup or when waking from sleep; they occur inconsistently.
When the KPs first surfaced, I used disk utility and noted an error (invalid extent entry). What followed was wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS and other applications more than once, including once after calling Apple tech support\. I've zapped PRAM, ran Apple's HW test (indicated no problems) and rebuilt permissions along the way.
The panics persisted, so I called Apple tech support again (case #66615064). As a result, I had the user boot in safe mode. No problems occurred during startups in safe mode, but the user needed to reboot in standard mode to get his work done. There does not seem to be anything in the Library/Startup Items of the Accounts/Login Items that could account for the kernel panics.
I was in the process of setting up an external HD as step #2 of the troubleshooting steps suggested to me by Apple tech support when I came across discussions here suggesting that Airport may be to blame and that a patch had just today (?) become available. The user will be downloading the software update this afternoon, but at this point I don't know if this will solve the issue.
I've also seen posts here indicating the only true solution is a new motherboard. I also understand that external devices may be to blame; the user has an external Apple keyboard, Microsoft USB mouse and Apple display. Here is probably way too much info from the system profiler:

Thanks to Garret Textor1 and iVmichael, this problem is solved: As soon as I pulled a third-party RAM chip, the kernel panics went away. And Kingston readily is sending a replacement, which is also good news.
Now, I'd like to mark the answers given by Garret and ivMichael with "solved" stars, but I've already marked them as helpful. How do I do this?
    Thanks again!

  • Constant kernel panic crashes

My macbook pro (Mid-2010; Mountain Lion) has been crashing to Kernal Panics more and more frequently; from few times a week to now around twice a day. It's getting really fustrating and not sure what is causing it. I hope its not a hardware problem; but I think its might be Chrome, as it seems to eat alot of my harddisk space with getting constant 'Your startup disk is full' popups.
I've switched over to Safari for now and hopefully it wont crash.
I'm not sure how to paste up my Kernel Panic log; this is from Logs>DiagnosticReports:

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. You might be able to resolve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Try that first, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
