How do I resolve an apparent PSD file conflict

I upgraded from CS5 to CS6 when it was released.  A couple of weeks ago I uninstalled both CS5 and an old version of Photoshop Elements v7 that had been on my machine.
Even though I use CS6 I just noticed that when I look for or open a PSD file from CS6 that my PSD files are defined in the "Type" column as follows "PhotoshopElements.PSDFile.7"
I no longer have Elements 7 on my machine and I'm concerned that there might be an artifact from that old app that is being used by CS6 instead of current versions of PSD.
Has anybody encountered anything like this - any suggestions about how to confirm I am using only current CS6 PSD converions?
Environment:  Windows 7, CS6, Lightroom 4.

Am I correct what your referring to in the above statement is the description for PSD file types in your window's file explorer window details view.  If so that just a string that was added to the windows registry for the file explored and not removed and is now the default description for file type PSD.  The may have happened when you removed CS5 and it restored the previous description for it though the current one was Adobe Photoshop Image file 12.  and it replaced it with the one it hade replaced in your case "PhotoshopElements.PSDFile.7"
I have had a lot of problems removing old version of Photoshop using the normal uninstall process.  Problems were always related to Window registry updates made during the uninstall process.  These days I leave the registry out of it for the most part. I remove the uninstall entry in the registry for the versions I want to remove then just wipe the  Photoshop version install tree. I leave common file and registry intact.  I also left CS5 installed for there are just too many bugs in CS6.
Most likely if you just reinstall CS6 on top of itself you will loose nothing and the registry will be updated with CS6 description for PSD files which is "Adobe Photoshop Image 13"... You do no need to its just a description.

  • How can I recover an overwritten PSD file?

I was working on an image which is supposed to have many layers in it, I merged the layers and I supposed to save it as a JPG file, but I didn't. I accidentally save it as PSD with the same file name, and I turned off the application. Now, I couldn't edit the file, coz all the layers are been merged. Could someone teach me where can I find its backup, or teach me how to recover the old PSD file? Thanks...

how to recover the old PSD file?
No way. You have overwritten it, which is something different than  doing an "undelete" on an accidentalyl deleted file - your data is  occupying the same space on the harddrive now and anything that was  there before is now gone.
Could someone teach me where can I find its backup
There  is none, as obviously you did not do any incremental saves and file  versions. Well, you now have learned this the hard way...

  • How to save layers of a PSD file?

I am a software developer and I have received a PSD file from a client. I need to be able to save the individual layers so I can apply them to the user interface. I've tried some suggestions from on-line sources but I'm still not able to export the images. The image below is what I am seeing for layers.
    All suggestions appreciated.

The problem is that Photoshop Elements does not natively open layer sets. You'll either have to have your client send you the PSD file(s) with the layers not in layer sets or find a workaround.
(You try a trial of Photoshop if you haven't tried out CS5 yet and do it in Photoshop. While you have the trial, you could record an action to open layer sets that could be used in Elements if you decide not to purchase Photoshop. See the Elements thread I linked...Post 6 which gives details on how to write that action.)
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
Some have found that you can open them if you use an action.  There is a link to a freebie action written for E7 on the Elements Village forum. I don't have any personal experience with the action nor know if it still works in E8. You'll have to register to get access to the action file but the registration page says it's free (unless otherwise specified). I'm not a member of this particular site so can't say what the otherwise specified means.
See post #6 on this page which gives details on how the action is written and where to install along with an action that has a download link:

  • With photoshop ConnectionSDK, How to retrieve app.activeDocument as PSD file?

    Dear all,
I'm currently making an automation s/w communicating with PhotoShop via connection sdk.
Even though my primary language is C#, translating Java/iOS sample to C# works fine.
Sending/receiving image file, invoking Javascript snippet work fine as demonstrated in sdk sample.
Also, sending PSD to PhotoShop also works, so that I can send PSD file in my s/w onto PhotoShop.
My question is here, How to retrieve PSD file working in PSD via connection sdk?
Actual goal of my s/w is
    1. send predefined PSD onto PhotoShop
    2. PhotoShop user does editing with this given psd
    3. when editing is done, retrieve PSD from PhotoShop onto my s/w to process further in Asset Management system.
Any advice would be helpful for me, Thanks in advance.

Did you purchase Lion or did it come with the computer? If you purchased, look in Mac App Store (MAS) under Purchases tab. You can download again.
If you need to reinstall, you can select to Reinstall OS X while booted from the Recovery Drive.
Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
If you need to purchase Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, you may order it from this page.

  • How do I open an old psd. file?

I'm trying to open a 10 year old psd. file with Photoshop CS2 and it tells me it is not a Photoshop file. What can I do to open it???

It's most likely corrupted, damaged perhaps irreparably.  A lot can happen to a hard drive, CD or DVD in ten years, and thus to a file.
Can you open it with any other application, such as Illustrator, Preview, Paint, etc.?  You may get lucky and be able to open the flattened composite or the embedded JPEG thumbnail preview.
If there are no privacy concerns, you could upload the file to your favorite FTP service, or to Dropbox or your favorite free server, such as yousendit.com, and send the link to one of us who can try opening it for you.
That way you can know for sure whether the file is toast.
That's why backups are so important…

  • How can I save a CYMK PSD file as a PDF in CS5?

I am able to make the file in CS4 on another computer I use (PC).  However when I try to save a CYMK PSD file as a PDF in Photoshop CS5 I don't see the option in the drop down menu?  Any ideas?  Here are some of the file details
    CMYK
    PSD
    8 bits/channel
    Thanks
    Evren

For some reason when I started my computer this morning and went to take a screen grab of my intent the option was there.  Could it be because I had to install Adobe Acrobat Pro?  I guess that would more than likely be a obvious thing-?
For some reason when I was given Adobe Master Suite at work Acrobat didn't come with.
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • How do I recover a corrupt PSD file?

My last save of a 1.5GB PSD file went without a hitch. Routine save, as I always do before closing Photoshop (using CTRL-S). The save was not interrupted in any way, nor did it behave differently than it did the previous 100 times I saved this particular file.
However, upon reloading, now the progress bar stalls at appx. 30% before the thing gives me a disk error.
I have 600GB and 700GB free on both of my hard drives, so disk space is not the problem.
I tried loading the file with both Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 64-bit Edition. Both produce the same results. Disk error.
    Rebooting did not change anything.
I tried copying the file to another location, but I get a "Cannot read from source disk" error.
But it's there, seemingly full size, with two weeks worth of work in it.
I ran a Google search for PSD recovery tools, and there are several commercial products claiming to be able to help. But I wanted to know if Adobe provided one first, then if anyone ever tried any of the other tools out there and saw it actually work.
    Thanks!

I mean, these are all "Bad Block" disk errors. What's the worst that can happen?
What non-Windows repair tools have I advised you to use?  I suggested a full System Image backup, using Windows Backup.
It's not a software problem, it's a confirmed hardware failure.  Software repair tools will not fix it.  This is experience talking.
The worst that can happen is that the drive will fail completely and you will lose all your data.  And yes, even Caviar Black drives do fail.
If something under the hood of your car goes boom and you lose power, do you just floor it to maintain speed so that you can keep driving?  No.  You stop immediately, to take the stress off your engine so that you don't compound the problem.  Something like a CHKDSK /R would exercise heck out of your drive - the very thing that's failing.  Is that really what you want?

  • How to make PSE default for .psd files

    Hi all
I have both PS CS2 and PSE9 installed on my MAC pro, running the latest version of Snow Leopard.  If I click to open an image with a .psd extension, the system automatically launches PS CS2.  I would like the system to recognize PSE9 as my default for images.  I looked all around system preferences yesterday, but couldn't find anything. I'm sure I'm missing something.....  Thanks.

Find a closed psd file. Click it once to highlight it and press command+i for the Get Info window. Under Open with Application choose PSE, then click Change All.

  • How to maximize large numbers of psd files for LR5.

I purchased LR5 and found out it can't read my Photoshop psd files.   Who would of thought that?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!    So as it stands I have about 10,000 psd files that LR can't read.   Is there a easy way to batch convert so LR can read.    Or just trash LR and stick with CS6.
    thanks
    MK

Lightroom is designed to manage digital ouput from cameras. No camera creates PSD files natively. I consider it a bonus that PSD files are supported at all. Personally, I never use them. Tiff is a much better format for most purposes.  That aside.
From scratch it took me 3.5 minutes to create this action and apply it to an entire folder of images.  If your PSD's are all in one place, this is simple. Click the mouse a few times and wait for your computer to process the images. If your PSD's are scattered, well it is more work to get it done.
If this were as big a problem as you seem to think it is, there would be screaming people all over the forums. If you think it warrants a feature request, there is a place to do that too: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/products/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightro om

  • How to reduce size of RAW & PSD files after all adjustments are finished?

I thought I read something about an Aperture feature that reduces file size of RAW files to something like a large .jpg file. I have finished adjusting many RAW files and could better use the disc space for other things. Is there any such feature or procedure? I have not upgraded to Aperture 2.0 but will soon.
Also, after making the round-trip to PhotoShop Elements, I see a large PSD file. Can I shrink that file after all adjustments are made?

If you're using referenced files in Aperture, you can archive the raw files onto a CD or some other place and delete the original. Just make sure Aperture is set to generate previews before you do this. That way you can see the file even after it's gone. You can't export or make any adjustments unless you can re-link the raw file.
And as far as PSD files, you should change your preferences to use TIFF for external editors. Then at least you can save the file in Photoshop as a compressed TIFF, which can save quite a bit of room. Also, I've noticed that Aperture uses 16-bit TIFF files, so you can save even more room by converting the file to an 8-bit TIFF.
By the way, take note that while Aperture defaults to ".tiff" as it's file suffix for TIFF files, Photoshop prefers ".tif". This can cause confusion. You've been warned.

  • How do I save a CS3 PSD File as CS2?

A client with CS2 can't open my CS3 files and I can't figure out how to create a legacy file in CS3. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    D.

Or, simplify the psd. If (for instance) the psd has 150 layers or so it is often possible to merge groups. This way you can save transparency but apply things that might have been interpreted incorrectly by cs2.
Also when you client says they can't open the files, is that a new feature? In the past if one opened a file from a later photoshop (as you are doing) the file would get misinterpreted but it would open. To just not open is something that ID or quark did, but not photoshop.
I suppose it is safer that way.

  • How can I restore a corrupted PSD file (MacOs 10.7.5 - Photoshop CS6)

    Hi,
after working with a lot of layers, masks and clipping layers my file got corrupted. That happened in the past but I always found a way to fix it buy copying uncorrupted layers to a new file. Most of the time it was just one layer corrupted. But this time is big, it looks like the whole file is corrupted. Find attached how the file looks after corrupting.
It's a big piece of work where I've already spent a good amount of time. Any tip to recover the file?
    Thanks.

It's in your Time Machine. Just go back before the corruption happened and retreive it.

  • How do I retrieve a corrupted psd file that opens up as a black layer?

The preview of the picture still appears when I select it in Photoshop, and even appears for a few seconds in Adobe Bridge before going back to black. But nothing I tried, from restore plug ins to online retrieve systems (that tried to bring back individual layers, only accounting to a single black layer and a bunch of blank ones) worked. I'd really like to get the picture back, or at least a png of it, but I'm at loss for what to try next. I use Cs5.1 64 bits, if anyone needs to know...

I solved the problem, actually! Although yesterday it didn't show, today previous versions for restore were available and it restored back my picture to an earlier date. Lost a few days of work but I'm relieved it's all back now...
