How do I restart my laptop after it shuts down after a OSX update?

I downloaded the upgrade to Yosemite 10.9.5 on my mac book and when I got to having it installed it shut itself down, now I can't get the computer to turn on.  There seems to be no power at the power button.  Is there a way to restart the computer?

  • How do I restore my IPod? I shut down in middle of updating, now it's a BLANK white screen??

iPod 4th gen was manually shut down (holding both buttons down to shut off...) while it was in middle of updating to ios 6, and now every time I turn bk on, it's a blank white screen! Looks like iPod has been wiped out! Please tell me how to fix this? I hooked to Mac, and still blank screen!!!

Like I said in your previous post:
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Network problem after new OSX update download

    Greetings!
I've had a new (late 06) Intel 24" iMac networked wirelessly to my older iMac/cable modem/D-Link router very successfully since October. No problems and seamless set-up through the D-Link online wizard software.
Saturday I noticed an OSX upgrade to 10.4.8 (211mg) and went ahead and did the download on the wireless (Intel) iMac.
Upon restart, however, I have not been able to reconnect to my network. Airport is ON, but choosing my network name returns an error message. I have also attempted to reboot both cable modem and router, and reentered the D-Link wizard to both doublecheck the old network, and set up a new network, but saving these settings seems to fail by not recognizing the device, the router.
One of the error messages (on the wireless iMac) claims that my "settings have been changed by another application" (or to that effect) but does not give any clue as to how to determine what or where.
Also, since attempting to start from scrtch with the router, I no longer seem to get a full signal from the airport -- in Internet Connect, I no longer see a nice row of blue signal lights.
As you may be able to tell, I am new to networking, and the D-Link setup had helped make it simple -- tht is, I bumbled my way through it and was pleased with how well it worked. Now, after the OS update, not having the network is annoying -- and potentilly disastrous, as I need this machine online by Saturday.
Anyone able to give me a gentle hand, or nudge in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance!
    Bill
PS- Mac user since 1991! Wireless network user since only late October!

    Hi again,
Sorry, BDAqua, I didn't see your note. I don't quite understand the last line of your suggestion -- a number greater than the number of CPUs? Not sure what you mean...
Phil, thanks for your note, too.
I believe the answer to your first question is 802.11g -- this is what it was set to.
After trying again to connect, using my old passwords, I was able to see the blue signal strength barss, and the Airport icon flashed on and off a few times, but ultimately the connection attempt failed again every time I tried it.
At this point, I'm no longer confident that my router is sending out a recognizable signal -- is this possible?
Also, in the dialog box in which available networks are usually shown (which has not happened since my original connection in October), today I was faced with a choice I hadn't seen before: 2WIRE736 -- is this likely to be someone else's network (a neighbor's)? I was wondering -- I'd never seen that one before. However, my own network names do not show up for choosing, and when I use Internet Connect to request them (and add WPA Personal and passwords), the connection appears to fail immediately.
At this point, should I attempt an OSX reinstall? Or has something I described made some sense for you?
Again, still very appreciative of all your help and patience with my ignorance.
    Bill

  • S20 (4157 CT0) - Soft restart doesn't complete - only shuts down

We're finding that when clicking on the restart, or when a piece of software initiates a restart sequence, the PC only shuts down.  It doesn't come back up, necessitating a press of the power button.
    How do I resolve this?
    Thanks.

what OS are you using?   do you have the BIOS set to start after a power loss or remain shut down?   i'm curious if this is a combination of OS/ACPI issues coupled with BIOS settings.

  • Need help? My laptop overheats and shuts down when up loading

I installed Premier Elements 8 on Vista and finished my first video and when I try to upload through the share option to youtube Before 1/2 way my laptop overheats and shuts down. I have tried several times. I tried pluging laptop directly in to network so I was not uploading wireless. No luck. I also tried turning my screen down so it would make less heat. I dont know what else to try.

What is happening is that the CPU and the HDD's are being stressed more than with most other operations. This is common and can be observed in places like Speedfan and Task Manager. There are a lot of files being written to, and read from. This is especially hard, if one only has a single internal HDD, as it must do so very much, and is being asked to do it all at the same time.
In general, editing Video is about the toughest task that one can ask of a computer. The Export phase is about as tough as editing gets. If one is editing AVCHD footage, the CPU usage goes up even higher and almost exponentially!
What you observe is not a fault of the software, but just how all NLE software must work.
Unfortunately, most laptops are not properly equiped with adequate cooling to begin with. They also usually have a single HDD. That was why I went with an extreme "gaming" laptop to start, and then modified it for NLE work. It works fine, but I had to add the cooling pad, and Speedfan.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • ITunes won't open after latest OSX update

AFter latest OSX update iTunes won't open.  Reinstalled iTunes.  Reinstalled OSX update.  When I click on icon in applications or in finder nothing happens.

This is what worked for me and others--original post found on this thread: Yosemite slow opening and cannot open itunes
This solved my question by Linc Davis.......
According to multiple reports on this site, Apple Support has given the following instructions to others who had a similar problem. I can't confirm that this procedure works or that it's necessary, but it won't leave you any worse off than you are now.
    First, back up all data.
Select the iTunes icon in the Applications folder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner to unlock the settings.
In the Sharing & Permissions section, change the Privilege setting for each Name in the list to Read & Write. Close the window. If the settings aren't visible, click the disclosure triangle on the left so that it points down.
You should now be able to drag the iTunes application to the Trash and empty. Your iTunes data won't be affected.
Click the iTunes link at the top of this page, download the installer package and run it.
If iTunes still doesn't launch, or if you can't complete the procedure, reinstall the OS.

  • How do you turn Magic Trackpad off when shutting down?

    Hi folks--
I just got a Magic Trackpad and I am learning to use it on a Mac Mini 2.0 Mid 2007, My question is; how does one turn it off, as I shut down my computer every night. I have seen that I could turn "off" Bluetooth before shutting down. I have tried the on/off switch on the Trackpad, but it seems to always stay On. Does it matter? I am concerned about battery life.

On the right side of your track pad is the switch. When you press and release the switch it will turn on, to turn off, press and hold the button until the green light goes out then release.
If you use rechargeable batteries you can just let the track pad go into sleep mode which is what I do. With Alkaline I would turn it off and make sure to take them out if you don't plan to use the track pad for an extended period. Alkaline batteries are prone to leaking once fully discharged.

There are some patterns of crashes that suggest possible causes and fixes; some users report crashes when FCPX is in the process of loading; others while importing/exporting, etc. Asking to narrow the list of possibilities.
    Suggest starting with three things:
    1) Update the software from the APp Store  if need be.
    2) Trash preferences.
    3) Repair permissions.

  • My ipod will only register with itunes after restarting my laptop, after that it just charges.

I just got a new Lenovo laptop.  When I plug my ipod in, it only registers with iTunes right after the computer has been turned on or restarted.  After that the ipod just charges.  I can find the ipod listed when I go to my control panel and click on my devices and printers section.  There is an exclamation point next to it and it says status: Driver error.  I've tried installing a new driver but it says mine is up to date.  When I click on the device and go into hardware I can find another spot that says device status and a message box.  In the box it says:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)
The driver could not be loaded because a previous version of the driver is still in memory.
After I restart laptop the ipod is reconized by iTunes when I plug it in and I can update it.  When I go to the device in the control panel I get none of the messages about driver error.  However, as soon I disconnect the ipod it all happens the next time I connect it unless I have restarted the laptop.
What can I do to make my iTunes register my ipod whenever I plug it in, and not just when I restart?

    Hi Carcasscar,

  • Several Apps seem to just mysteriously shut down after using for a while. Same with Safari, I will be using Safari and it shuts down. Face book too. I've reset and shut down my iPad 3 and restart it, but it stills shuts down. What to do?

Several Apps seem to mysteriously shut down after using them for a while. Face Book shuts down , netflix, Safari, and other Apps. They work fine for a short while, or a long while, and then shut down and it brings me to my regular desktop screen. I've tried restarting by completely shutting down the IPad until I see the apple pic and turned it back on, but the shutdowns of apps continue. Anyone else have this issue? It generally started shortly after downloading and installing IOS 7......

    Hi jennyoutwest,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The following articles will provide some troubleshooting steps for your iPhone.
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If that does not resolve the issue, refer to page 146 in the iPhone User Guide to Reset All Settings:
iPhone User Guide for iOS 7
    manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
The final troubleshooting step would be to restore your device:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition. Before restoring:
Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes.
    Back up your device.
Transfer and sync content to your computer.
    Cheers,
    - Judy
