How do I restore a partitioned .dmg image to a new drive?

I created a disk image of a partitioned drive (3 partitions) But when I run restore Disk Utility it only restores one partition. The size of the backup.dmg file is over 200gb so I know it imaged the contents of  all three partitions.
I disk Utility is not capable of restoring my imaged hard drive, is there any software that is capable?
I know my mistake, I should have imaged each partition separately, but that is the benefit of hindsight, now I need to get my data from, of course, the partition DU is not restoring, Arrg!

When you mount the disk image, do all the partitions mount?

  • HT201250 How do I restore from Timeline external backup to a different drive?

Good day!  Here's my current architecture
    1 MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.2
1 Lacie Rugged External Drive (1T)
    1 G Drive 2T RAID
    1 MyPassport External Drive (2T)
I have been backing up weekly both the MacBook Pro AND the Lacie to the RAID Device.
Lacie Rugged: My Lacie has my iTunes.  Recently there have been issues with communicating with the Lacie.  Genius bar says there is an issue with the drive itself.  I purchased a new Firewire to troubleshoot.  Still shows that the drive accidentally disconnects (e.g. not available) after about a couple of minutes.
So I bought a new drive.
Restore: When I plug in my new MyPassport and access my Timeline backups, I cannot see the Lacie backups to restore.  It seems that Timeline requires the original drive (Lacie) to be plugged in (which is the one I am having issues with).
Question: How do I restore from a backup(Lacie) to my new external drive(MyPassport)?

I imagine you mean Time Machine, not TimeLine. If you do mean Timeline, I have no idea what that is.

I had set up my new tab page with an image I uploaded. It worked fine for months, if not years.
Today, I got a 'crash' that asked me to start Firefox in 'safe' mode or 'restore'. I chose 'restore'.
Thereupon, my image was gone from my new tab page. I cannot find how to restore it, and add ons that supposedly allow me to add my own image are not helpful. At least, I cannot figure them out.
Can you provide help on a computer for dummies level?

Sounds that you have reset Firefox and created a new profile.
You can try to create a new profile or reset Firefox.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems
When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder.<br />
Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.
It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

You can try to restore the prefs.js file and copy this file from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop shortcut to the current Firefox program folder.

  • How do I restore a Time Machine backup to a new hard drive in an iMac 5.1?

    Hi all,
I recently had a hard drive failure in my mid-2006 iMac 5.1 and have now installed a new drive.  The iMac was previously running an up-to-date version of OSX 10.7 - Lion.  However I've struggled to restore the machine from its Time Machine backup, trying using both Setup Assistant which has never allowed me to overwrite my startup files with the restore, and several attempts using Migration Assistant and following Pondini's Migration Problems tutorial, which worked partially, but has left me with a series of files/folders, many of which have Permissions problems.
The most recent attempt, using Migration Assistant is giving me a new error message:
You can't transfer from your other Mac to this one because your other Mac uses a newer version of Mac OS X.  You must upgrade this Mac before you can transfer from your other Mac.
I'm getting it that the Time Machine data is more current (in terms of OSX) than my desktop machine - which I have prepared using my Snow Leopard start-up disc (but wonder why this is the first time that I'm getting told this on attempting to restore).  But how do I get my iMac to a state whereby I can restore from the Time Machine?
I can't upgrade the Mac using Software Update as this will only get me to OSX 10.6.8 (which is where I currently am, although some applications don't seem to want to work in this state - App Store, Safari on occasion); I can't download OSX 10.7 from the App Store as it is no longer there, and I can't install OSX 10.8 as my iMac is not compatible with this release.  I seem to be stuck in an infinite loop from which I don't seem to be able to get out of.
    Can anyone help at all?
Many thanks in advance for any contributions & apologies if I've omitted any crucial information that might be needed to help me out.
    Paul

    Thanks den.thed,
Apologies for not replying back sooner - I've been away.
Although your suggestion helped me in getting a copy of Lion that I could use, it didn't help with the restore from Time Capsule issue.  I had to download the Lion app onto my MacBook & then transfer it across but it wouldn't let me upgrade my OS for some reason, so I ended up wiping the iMac completely and restoring via my Snow Leopard install disk.  For some reason, this time, it let me have the option of using Setup Assistant to access the Time Capsule for a complete restore.
Now, over a week later, with various bits of tweaking and reinstalling some apps that didn't seem to come across, I have my system back.
    Thanks for the help anyway.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • Apple is replacing my 27" iMac Hard Drive and when I get it back, I want to know how do I restore from Time Machine to before the hard drive failed

My hard drive (1TB) failed this week on my Late 2009 27" iMac and I took it into the Apple Store.  They confirmed the problem was the hard drive after a couple tests and offered to replace it for $260.  I have everything backed up on my Time Capsule within Time Machine and am wondering how I can restore my entire PC (all my files, settings, etc) from my last back up a couple days ago.  I am assuming it is a simple fix, but I want to have a good plan when it comes back...if there are articles or other threads you can point me to, I would apprecite it.  I am looking forward to getting a refreshed computer back but it would be great to have it fully restore from my last backup.
    Thanks!

  • How do I get a OS image on the new drive

I had to replace the SSD in my 3.2 air,  How do I get a new os image on the new SSD?

If the computer shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, connect its original thumbdrive, restart it with the Option key held down, click on it, and install a fresh OS. On a newer MacBook Air, connect it to the Internet, press the Command and R keys at startup, and use Apple's Internet recovery system instead.

can, and how do you restore music from ipod back to recently repaced harddrive on a pc not mac?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Recovery HD. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
    Boot Using Command+R keys:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
      3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

  • How to move Time Machine Back UP files to a new drive w/o cloning

I have a Time Capsule which is not working correctly (does not stay connected to the Internet). I need to "clone" my Time Machine files to a new drive, as suggested, however, the Time Capsule is 1T and the new drive is 320 Gigs. (The actual files on the 1T are less than 150 G.) How do I backup the Time Machine files if I can't use the CLONE device in disk utility? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I tried that, it won't let me copy the backups to a new drive. At this point I am not concerned about continuing to back up, I can start a new TM backup if need be, I am more concerned about getting the old back up to a disk which I can then access once I exchange the Time Capsule.
    Thanks for the advice though.

  • Restore BOOTCAMP from .dmg image - Unable to scan (invalid argument)

I'm having trouble getting my maching back in order after a crash.  I'm running a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2009 with a Bootcamp partition.  Last week my harddrive crashed or something and I wasn't able to boot into either drive.  Using the Snow Leopard install DVD and Disk Utility I made .dmgs of the entire HD and each of the partitions (Mac HD and Bootcamp - maybe overkill but..).  I have since been able to restore my Mac side from the image, even without installing OSX - I just restored from the image using Disk Util again and everything seems to work fine.  But, now I've been trying to do the same thing with my Bootcamp side - I have a separate .dmg for that.  Everything seems to go fine except that when I try to restore it tells me the image needs to be scanned and when I scan I get the error message: "Unable to scan BOOTCAMP.dmg (invalid argument)".  I've tried using different schemes of compression/ no compression on the image, tried to convert to a .cdr then rename to .iso and restore using Windows' native Recovery option. I even tried Terminal - sudo asr restore -noverify -source _________ -target __________ , but it wouldn't let me drag and drop in the Bootcamp drive icon...
Now I don't know what to do but ask.
    Has anyone solved this problem????

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
Is there anyway I can convert my .dmg or .cdr/.iso to something that winclone can use?
ps I did finally get Disk Utility to scan the image.  I had to convert it to a compressed .dmg from the uncompressed one and it finished it fine but still in Restore in Disk Util. I can't set the destination as my bootcamp partition.
Looks like I'll have to reinstall everything then eh? Well thanks for your help.

If you do a factory restore using HP recovery discs it will put everything back including recovery partition. I don't know if any way to manually re-create the recovery partition.
NOTE: back up your files as Factory Restore wipes ALL data.
