help, ive got an iphone 3gs off my boss at work, ive got an orange paymonthly sim and i thought id unlocked to factory settings but this morning tis reverted back to an iphones sign with a usb cable picture, can anyone please help me at all

Go to settings>>>general>>>reset>>>erase all contents and settings
The iPhone will only work with Orange if the previous owner
1. Was also using Orange ...or
2. has had the iPhone unlocked by Orange for use on any network

I restored my iphone 4 back to factory settings. After the phone restarts iTunes just shows it as an iphone and the itunes screen on my mac is a white box.
I cant add anything to the iphone

It is NOT a bug. You provided a password. If you can't remember it, you can't restore your phone from backup. Very simple.

Do a hard reset with a computer. Enter DFU mode, connect to iTunes, and it will say that our device is in "recovery mode". Then click restore.

When I go into the sync options it say I have another user account and asks me if I want to merge of replace. I'm assuming it's trying to tell me I have an older iTunes Library, but don't know that. Geez, maybe people over 60 shouldn't have iPhones, iTunes just bafles me.

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, either get a sim card from the carrier your phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.

You'll need to update your system or fine a system you can use to activate it. There's no way around it.
If you can get to an Apple store and explain the situation to them, they 'may' be able to hook you up with an OS upgrade to Leopard assuming you have a G4 or G5 mac that can handle it.

Eustace gave you the correct answer here - you cannot restore your Mac to its factory settings without its original DVDs or a retail copy of another Mac OS, such as Snow Leopard.
You can try calling Apple to request a replacement set of DVDs, but I believe that also comes at a cost.
If your Mac is running Lion (OS X 10.7), then I believe the Recovery HD is available to you and can be used to wipe the computer and start fresh.
However, if you are running 10.5 or 10.6, the Recovery HD is not present and you must use a DVD.

How old was the backup? If you restored from a one-month-old backup, then yes, one month's data would be missing and cannot be restored unless you have a newer backup.
