How do I restore MacBook Air with time machine

I've done backups to time machine but have no clue how to restore. I have a problem with Open Office hanging up and it doesn't help to delete it and download again.

To restore individual files see Restoring specific files or folders.
Restoring your entire system from a backup
Hold down the Command and R keys at startup to start the computer from the Recovery system. The Recovery menu that appears includes the option to restore from a Time Machine backup. If you are using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, start your computer from the installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.

  • How do I restore lost emails with Time Machine?

I would like to know how I restore lost drafts that I had on my mail program 6.6 with Time Machine.
I forgot that when you restore the mail program (was buggy) it saves all your emails except for your drafts. So now I need to find all the drafts that were deleted with my Time Machine.
Where are the drafts store prior to when I have to delete my mail program because of bugs in it?
How do I find them once I launch Time Machine.  Can't recall where they are stored in my systems folder?
Thanks for any help regarding this.

  • Restoring macbook pro with time machine

I have a macbook pro and I since putting Leopard on it (Archive and install) I am having all kinds of applications crashing and freezing. I am making my first time machine back up right now. What I want to know is if after the back up is done I want to do a clean install of Leopard and the restore my data and applications.
Will I be able to restore all my applications as well as my data from time machine? Or will I have to go to all my applications websites and re-download the programs?
    Thank you
    Joe

    Joe,
With a complete Time Machine backup, you can completely restore everything. When you boot to the Leopard Install disk, and after you have used Disk Utility (from the installer's "Utilities" menu) to format (erase) your hard drive, you can use the "Restore From a Time Machine Backup" utility. Open this from the "Utilities" menu, just as you do Disk Utility. Obviously, you'll need the backup drive connected and powered on at the time.
This said, I'm not sure that you want to use this. If you have a damaged system, that damage will undoubtedly be reproduced in your Time Machine backup. There is even the possibility that the backup is not "viable" enough to be restored in this manner.
I recommend you give it a try, anyway. Restoring from a Time Machine backup takes considerably less time than a "normal" installation; you will only waste minimal time, if the restoration or the resultant installation fails.
If you do run into problems, you can reinstall normally (from the Leopard disk) and restore your files from the Time Machine afterward. In this case, I recommend that your applications be reinstalled again manually.

  • How do I restore 'network settings' with time machine?

I messed with my with my wi-fi settings...having internet access problems...want to go back the way it was a few days ago (when it worked OK)...but on lion time machine, can't find systempreferences plist to restore (no User/Library/... any more). So how do I restore my network settings in system preferences? TIA

to make your user library visible, in Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • How will i restore this MBP with time machine

Hi all, I wonder if someone can help me with this question about time machine.
I have a 2007 MBP whos graphics card failed - i've just had it fixed.
However, many months passed between this failure and getting it fixed, and as its so old i realised it wasnt worth fixing, rather, better off buying a new one - so I bought a glossy 13 inch model but this made me feel sick within 10 mins, so i got a 15 inch matte screen made, not so bad, but it made me sick after an hour - so im basically sensitive to LED backlighting! therefore, i'm fixing the old one, and hoping i can get another year or so out of it and praying a new technology screen comes out that i can take!
the reason im writing all this is because the old mbp only had 150gb capacity. I have 200gb of music etc that i kept on external hard drives, however because i got a 500gb new laptop, the music etc was moved onto this new laptop, so when i did time machine back up, i have 300 or so gb total. (before sending this new laptop back to apple)
therefore, i guess i cant do time machine when i get this 2007 mbp back from being fixed(as the time machine back up is much bigger than the capacity of my 2007 mbp) . Can i remove all the music etc from my time machine back up, (making sure that the back up is less than 150 gb) then do the time machine back up, and put the music onto an external hard drive again? ive noticed in the past it doesnt seem to like it when you delete things from the time machine back up file
Please let me know if you need any more info, or somethings not clear here - many thanks for your help in advance

Grant Lenahan has pointed you in the right direction. That same website has videos showing the total installation process for installing a HDD.  It is not rocket science.
If I am not mistaken you have a pre-unibody MBP.  It is a bit trickier to do that compared to the new ones, but if you are organized and exercise patience, you can do it.  I know, I have a 2006 MBP and I have done it several times.  The first time I did it, I was very apprehensive.
The most important thing to remember is that when the keyboard is being removed, there is a ribbon cable that must be detached, so don't just pull it off when the keyboard is loosened from the bottom case.  Also when you plug the new HDD into the cable, make sure it is seated correctly, otherwise you may have to open the MBP again (it happened to me once).  OWC will send a illustrated booklet with the HDD on how to do it.
I would not get the tool kit from OWC.  You will need a 00 Phillips driver and a #6 Tork driver plus a thin piece of stiff plastic (like a credit card).   Get good ones, it does make a difference.
    Ciao.

  • How do I restore email settings with Time Machine and Mountain Lion?

Like so many others, I have tried to follow suggestions of going to Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist.

  • How do you restore iCal calendars in Time Machine

I recently updated to iCloud from Mobile Me and when I opened iCal I noticed that the Mobile Me calendars and the iCloud Calendars were the same, so I deleted all my Mobile Me calendars and to my horror realized after reopening iCal that all the caledars were deleted in the iCloud calendar as well.
How do I restore those calendars via Time Machine? I am running OS X Lion and although I have made the terminal change so I can see my user Library folder, within Time Machine it does not show up.
    Help!!

Well, I guess they're not really ical backups, per se.
When i went to migrate MobileMe to iCloud, it said "make sure you back up your calendars first" and I almost didn't do it because I figured I have TM if I need it, but decided just to be safe...
so I did file>export>export for each calendar.
Then after the migration seemed to go smoothly, I deleted them.
    Then got into this snafu.
Fortunately, was able to TM back to the desktop from right before I erased them.
so I restored them, then imported them one by one, and so far it looks like everything is good.  Knock on wood.
It's still frightening to me though that an accidental deletion from the cloud turns into a day of screwing around to restore things!!  It shouldn't be that easy to just permanently erase so much important data. I shouldn't have to manually export all my calendars every day if I want a backup...

  • How to factory reset Macbook Air with Mavericks

I work at a pawn shop and have a Macbook air with OS X 10.9 installed.  I need to be able to reset this, so the previous owner's information is not compromised before selling it.  When powering on the Mac I am unable to use any boot commands to get to terminal or recovery options because a screen with a lock and a password entry box show up.  How can I bypass this to reset the mac?
    Thanks

I have addressed the issue with the other team members going forward, but I still have potentially 1-4 months of affected inventory...which is potentially a huge financial loss.
I don't doubt that this particular machine was tested before it was purchased, but if the general assumption was, passwords are no big deal, we can just boot to recoery mode and reset the mac later, then this would have been no cause for concern.
either way, I have to find away around this for my current inventory.  I will get some torx screw drivers and try removing the ram.
    thank you

  • How can I restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. Using Migrat

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive
