How do I restore mailboxes from a hard-drive back-up?

Hi there,
I had a hard-drive failure after upgrading to Yosemite. I managed to get the drive backed-up, but not in time machine. I have been restoring things piecemeal. One thing I need to figure out is how to import my old mailboxes. Where are they typically stored in Yosemite? What are the critical files to copy to where in order to get my Mail running with all of my old emails/boxes?

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library.

I have an "old" black macbook, that I have backed up on an external hard drive using time machine. I recently got a new (aluminum) macbook and i want to transfer my data from my hard drive to my new computer (itunes library, photos, etc...). I do NOT have ilife or iwork on my new computer, but i have it on my old macbook which (in theory) should be backed up on my external HD. Is it possible to transfer applications like that to my new computer if I "disable" it from my old computer? I also just got a new iphone 5 and would like to be able to sync it to my new computer but my itunes library is empty (until i take stuff from my hard drive and put it on my new computer). Obviously my old macbook will not support the software needed to hook up my new iphone to itunes, but my new computer will. So I beg the answer to my question...how do i get my stuff from one computer to the new one and can i transfer applications such at iphoto, pages, (ilife, iwork)...legally by disabling from my old computer?????

How do I restore data from recovered hard drive?

In a nutshell-
Hard drive failed. We had it replaced, and recovered data from old hard drive, put it on an external hard drive. Now we want to put that data onto the new hard drive.
Is it as simple as dragging it over?
We're missing most of the software that came with our computer when we first bought it. We can't find the software installation disk, but we do see application icons from the recovered data. We do have the Software disk from a Mac mini. Can we use this disk? It seems like there has to be a way to get the software we had before the crash without paying to have it done.

You cannot use the discs from a Mac Mini--you have to have the exact discs for your iBook G4. These discs are very machine specific.
That said, you can try bringing over the various applications from your external drive. The only potential problem is that because the old drive failed, there could be some software corruption.
If you can locate your original discs and install the software from them, that would be ideal. If you can't, you can get replacement discs from Apple for a fee.
As for the data, you should be able to just drag it over.

But today I tried to get some data from an old WD Passport Hard Drive and Time Machine immidately tried to backup itself on it.
Before I understood time machine startet to backup on my hard drive and everything I had on it before was gone.

In order for Time Machine to back up to a HDD, it must be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Disk Utility. Formatting will erase all user data on that HDD. Time Machine will only delete TM data on a HDD that may have other data on it (non TM data).
If you formatted that WD HDD for use with Time Machine, all data that was on it is gone. If you put data on the WD HDD after formatting, it still should be there.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.

Now what I would like to do would be to find a file that has the bookmarks on that drive at included on the new hard drive.

The bookmarks, along with the history is stored in a file called places.sqlite inside the profile folder. In Windows 7 the default location for the profile folder is:
C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>
The profile folder name will typically be xxxxxxxx.default, where xxxxxxxx is a random set of characters. The profile folder is normally hidden, to display it see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
With Firefox closed you can copy the places.sqlite file from this location into your current profile folder. You can recover more than just the bookmarks, for details see [[Recovering important data from an old profile]].

I just realized that should it one day fail and no longer appear as a connected device, I'm not sure how to restore its data to another external drive. I came across this discussion after encountering the same problem. Since my internal HD was cose to full I added an additional external HD to my setup. I moved my iPhoto files to an external HD and backed both this external HD and my internal HD up with Time Machine to another external HD. So far the theory. When I wanted to test if this setup worked I noticed that I could only see my iPhoto libraries on the external HD in Time Machine when the external HD was connected to my computer, but not if I turned it off. This led me to search for a solution on the Apple Support Communities discussion board.
The suggestions made Kappy seem right, at least in my experience, in that my Time Machine simply did not back up the external HD until I followed the steps he suggested above. These were the following:
"So, if you want it backed up then here's what you need to do:
1. In Time Machine preferences remove the external drive from the Exclude list.
2. Verify that it is now included with your other drive in the backup list.
3. Do a Backup Now to create a new backup of the external drive."
After doing this, my external HD showed up in the Backups.backupd as a seperate folder. I could clearly see the Time Machine back-up for my internal HD and my external HD. In addition, in Time Machine itself I was able to find the external harddrive by clicking on my own computers name under "Devices". I hope my experience helps to resolve your issue as this discussion board has helped me resolve mine (which I believe to be very similar).

if your main library is on your external, then when not connected, you wont have access to it.
so first decide, where do you want to keep the files.
E.g. In my case, I keep my files on "C:\iTunes Music".
I have a backup on external "Z:\iTunes Backup". If I format my laptop, this is how I restore everything.
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced.
The iTunes music folder in selects as "C:\iTunes Music"
I have checked Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized, and also Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to ibrary". Click OK to save and close preferences.
My iTunes list is now empty. I go to file, and select "Add Folder to Library". From that window, I select "Z:\iTunes Backup". iTunes then copies everything from the backup to "C:\iTunes Music". For me, backup is backup, I dont need it to play music.
Now decide this. If you do not want to keep music on C:, but want to only connect the external to update music on your ipod, do this:
In preferences, set iTunes Music folder as "Z:\iTunes Backup", and uncheck Copy files to iTunes Music folder, since they are already there. Then in files, select Add folder to library again to build and update the list.

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

Also yes.
Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default. You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up. (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different. See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Do you have a USB stick you could copy the image to? Where I live, a CD costs $0.50 at most. To put that into perspective. A coffee costs a $1.00. Either a CD costs a lot more than a coffee where you live or are you telling me you'd rather get a lot of grey hair than buy half a coffee?

I suggest that you download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it. It will show all of your files and the respective sizes. Delete or transfer to an external HDD what you do not want on your internal drive. Don't forget to empty Trash.
