How do I restore my backup to my iphone

I had to have my iphone replaced by Genius bar and was told I could restore my last back up but when I tried to do it iTunes told me the phone did not have the latest software and I would have to set it up as a new phone, download the new software and then restore from back up. I have updated the software but now how do I get to the backup?

You need to perform a reset (settings>General, scroll to bottom of screen). This will delete everything on the device. Then connect to iTunes and it will offer to perform a reset from either iTunes backup or iCloud. Take it from there.

Not directly. You could restore your iPhone 5s with the backup containing the photos you are looking for and then save them to Dropbox. Then restore the iPhone 5s to the iPod Touch Backup and load the photos from Dropbox.

Since you say you cant see the back up in iTunes you should be able to see it when following the last step where it says for iTunes 10.7 or earlier. Dont worry as this step also works for iTunes 11.

You cannot. However, if your back up is through iTunes on your computer and you do an internet search for something like "iPhone BackUpExtractor", I believe there is software that will help you access the SQL database that is your back up. You may be able to pull out what you need.

Nope - you cannot restore a backup from a newer iOS version on to a device running an older iOS version. The reverse works, but in your case to use your backup, you must update to iOS 7.0.3 - no other option if you want to use that backup.

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting. With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside. There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash. If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder. If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

It sounds as if the phone is waiting to be activated. Did you update software or something like that on the phone? You can either try to finish the Setup routine, or you can connect the device to iTunes on the computer and then after selecting the iPhone in the device pane, click on the button that says Restore a Backup.

You're welcome.
First check to be sure the new phone is running the same or higher version of iOS as the one you backed up (Settings>General>About>Version). If it isn't, you'll need to update the iOS first. Then go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, go through the setup screens on the phone and when given the options, choose Restore from iCloud backup and follow the prompts, choosing the backup of your personal phone to restore to.
Be sure the phone is connected to wifi and your charger while it is restoring the backup.

I needed to restore the phone and I didnt realize my back-up was 1yr old, and now the phone is restored and I've got a year old contact list and iMessage chat history. Luckily my iMessage on the Mac is still valid and has all the chat history. My question is how can I restore iMessage chats on my iPhone 4 from my Mac? If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.
