How do I restore my bookmarks from an HTML file?

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I want to restore my bookmarks from an HTML file.
This used to be accessible via "Bookmarks-> Organise Bookmarks" but the "Organise Bookmarks" menu item no longer exists so I'm stymied.
This help system seems to think that it does exist, however, so please note that on my system, it does NOT. I suspect that hundreds, thousands, or even millions of new Ubuntu 11.04 users will be facing exactly the same problem.
I don't think users will be able to help with this one unless someone knows how to restore the "Organise Bookmarks" menu item. It's the only one that will do what I want and so there's no point recommending "Show All Bookmarks" as a solution. That doesn't work.
Finally, persuading this system that I really do have a new problem that isn't covered in the FAQs was a very irritating experience. I wonder if Chrome will know what to do with my "bookmarks.html" file?

Update to my previous posting. I just installed Chromium, and it took '''LESS than 10 seconds''' to import my bookmarks. Why would I waste any more time with Firefox?? I had intended to give Firefox 4 a chance to show me what improvements had been made, but who needs the grief. Bad move guys... bad move.

  • How do I restore my bookmarks from a saved file on my computer if it is not a HTML Document file?

Look I had save a copy of my bookmarks on my external hard drive. I had used the file before to restore my bookmarks in the past with no problem. Now it says its not an html doc file. Or when I had to hit the reset button all my old firefox data was saved to my computers desk top in a folder how can I use the bookmark file in that folder. I hope there is a way.

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension:
    * .html for a HTML backup
    * .json for a JSON backup
You can check the type via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
A JSON backup starts with: <b><nowiki>{"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":</nowiki></b>
An HTML backup starts with: <b><nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki></b>

  • Firefox didnt sync my bookmark to my account???? WTF. i reinstall my windows but i thought ff synced my bookmarks. .. how can i restore my bookmark from my account?????

Firefox didn't sync my bookmark to my account???? WTF. i reinstall my windows but i thought ff synced my bookmarks. .. how can i restore my bookmark from my account?????

Sorry. Sync isn't really intended as a backup medium as you were trying to use it for. It isn't meant to be a storage "cloud". It's purpose is to keep Firefox bookmarks synchronized across multiple Firefox installations or Profiles - so all your bookmarks are the same on each device / Profile.

  • HT2477 HOW DO I RESTORE MY BOOKMARKS FROM TIME MACHINE

I just got a new hard drive put into my macbook pro....im lost with this whole time machine thing. how do i restore my bookmarks and playlists?

Do you only want to restore your bookmarks and playlists?
Or, do you want to restore your entire user? When you installed and ran startup, it should have asked if you want to restore from a Time Machine backup. That would have been the simple way.
The bookmarks are stored in your Library/Safari folder. In Finder, hold down the option key while selecting Library from the Go menu.
    Enter Time Machine.
Navigate to the Safari folder and restore the bookmarks.plist file
Then, navigate to your home folder, Music and restore the iTunes folder.
You only mention playlists and not the actual music. If you've already imported your music, I'm not sure if restoring the playlists will actually work as they are indexed on the music files. If your music is stored someplace other than your iTunes folder, restoring the iTunes folder may work. You may also need to restore the com.apple.itunes.plist which is in your Library/Preferences.

  • How do you restore the system from a backup file that you created previously

I have a notebook, Pavilion g6 - 1031TX running windows 7 64bit OS, and ran the backup utility a few weeks ago before running a full system recovery to attemp to fix an issue - this issue was fixed by warranty, and now I need to recover everything from the backup files, I have run the restore executable in the folder and it created another folder on my C: drive (System recovery files), how do I use this to restore the system to its previous state?

Unfortunately, the backup utilty portion of Recovery is not optimal solution for restoring many files.Unless you know exactly where they go you are stuck. Most of the important stuff such as photos, music, etc will be in the 'Users' folder under your user name. You will have to manually move them to correct location.
A better option in the futureĀ is Windows 7's backup app in Control Panel.

  • I try to restore my bookmarks from a json file but i get "warning: unresponsive script - Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:3580" message - please help

I have no idea why my bookmarks wont restore. I am confident that I even tried restoring them at the time of creation of the json file to make sure that they worked, and after i was confident i left them for a month or two then tried to restore them, but it does not work at all. I get Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:3580 (unresponsive script error msgs) and whether i click continue or stop script the bookmarks do not change. Please help - there is a lot of bookmarks there i was relying on.

Not sure if this is appropriate, but I have a similar problem. Yesterday I got an update from MS to my new Win 7 machine. Now all my bookmarks are gone except the three I have in the toolbar.
I have tried following the instructions here but it's not working. First: I can find the bookmark backup files, but don't have any html files there. They are listed as "bookmark-dates-number-a series of letters and numbers, then ==.json."
I'm confused as to what to do next.

  • I had upgraded to firefox 3.0 years ago and lost my firefox 2.0 bookmarks. How do I retrieve them? I keep getting only one bookmark from the html file.

Years back I had installed Firefox 3.0 (at launch, so not beta) into a separate program folder. After installation, I expected to have my bookmarks saved. Recently I found out my bookmarks were in application data and I found out I had one profile. That meant that my firefox 2.0 bookmarks were replaced.
I read up on the FAQs and it stated that bookmark backups only save the previous 5 days or so, so I don't think they are usable though I have them saved. The bookmarks.html file in my profile shows only one bookmark after importing it into firefox 3.5 and firefox 2.0 (downgraded back to check it out), google chrome, and internet explorer. I still have the bookmarks.bak and bookmarks.html.bak files as well.
A little backstory before I got up to this point because it's a bit convoluted because I thought I could retrieve them like IE favorites which were easy:
    1) Switched to Firefox 2.0 from Internet Explorer and got several hundred bookmarks.
    2) Got HyperBookmarks add-on which bugged up and replaced my previous bookmarks folder though it stated in FAQs that my original Firefox 2.0 bookmarks were in a separate folder so I didn't worry about it.
    3) Upgraded to Firefox 3.0 and it replaced all my bookmarks with nothing in bookmarks list. I thought it was saved because I installed Firefox 3.0 in a separate folder.
    4) Retrieved 3.0 Bookmarks and Archived them, but wasn't able to find Firefox 2.0 Bookmarks (original) nor the HyperBK version, except in HyperBk Backups folder.

In the "Edit this Bookmark" window, use the 2nd drop-down button, that is to the right of the "Folder", to open a larger window that will allow more folder to appear. See the sloppy red arrow on the screenshot below.

    Is that Ubuntu 11.04?
Ubuntu 11.04 displays window menus in the control bar at the top of the screen<br />
Click on Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks then move your mouse to the left upper corner toward Firefox Web Browser.<br />
You'll get pop up menu (Organize, Views and Import and Backup).<br />

  • How do I restore all bookmarks from an external hard drive to a refreshed firefox?

I just "refreshed" Firefox and lost ALL of my passwords, even though the instructions said they would be saved. I have tried copying them from the Old Firefox Data folder and this does NOTHING. I have all of the data I need on an external hard drive and the ability to browse ( have already found my Firefox profile on the backup drive) and copy and paste data from that drive to my C drive. Please tell me EXACTLY how to transfer my bookmarks to the refreshed version of Firefox. I have YEARS of bookmarks that I CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE. I will be more than happy to simply restore my old profile even though that will slow Firefox down. That would be a small price to pay, but I must have the bookmarks back. Please help!

  • How do I move my bookmarks from my old laptop to my new laptop without having to enter them one at a time?

I just want to move my bookmarks to Firefox in my new laptop computer.

The most convenient method is to export to a file, then copy/email the file, then import from the file. The most straightforward format is the HTML format. These articles describe the steps:
Old PC: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Exporting%20bookmarks%20to%20an%20HTML%20file Exporting bookmarks to an HTML file | How to | Firefox Help].

'''Please note:''' the menu item formerly named "Organize Bookmarks" is now known as "Show All Bookmarks" in Firefox 4 and 5.

  • How do I "restore" a Mailbox from an archive?

I know how to Archive a Mailbox (Mail > Mailbox > Archive Mailbox > choose a location to store the archive file) and it works.
But how do I restore a Mailbox from this archived file? I have not found ANY reference in the help menu about what to do with an archived mailbox and what it should be good for.
I'd appreciate any pointers to understand this archiving business better. Thanks and cheers, Veit

Again, VK, how helpful that was.
The reason that I could not find the "Import mailbox" feature: I looked in the Mailbox tab, where one would expect it to be.
Thanks for the solution, it worked perfectly.
By the way: What is the difference between these three Mailboxes?:
    Inbox>Veit (i.e. my first name)
that's the inbox for your email account. you evidently called it Viet.
(I also have one for my wife and for an old POP account) and
    On My Mac, and
    Veit
that's just a local mailbox in "on my mac" section called Viet. it's not tied to any account and exists only on your computer.
Let me know if you can enlighten me there.
    Cheers,

  • Bookmarks have disappeared on two machine unable to restore from backup folder in Firefox. How can I restore my bookmarks?

All my bookmarks have disappeared on two machines. I tried used the restore function it did not work, and I tried to updated my Plugins and for some reason Firefox would not register the updates . How can I restore my bookmarks?

Immediately backup the profiles on both machines. Keep the profile backup files and folders somewhere safe outside the Firefox program and profile paths. The Windows Desktop would be a suitable location.
    * see [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
    * also note the information on bookmarks [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
Do you use Firefox sync ?
*[[Firefox Sync - Take your bookmarks, tabs and personal information with you]]
that is not itself a backup, but you may consider the synced second device to be a backup
Restored bookmarks overwrite the existing bookmarks. You may still have some left, but unfortunately you could have overwritten most or all of them with corrupt copies. If you backup the profile at least you have access to copies of whatever automatic backups were made. Note in future that it is good practice to periodically make backups.
Post back again once you have backed up the profiles, and read the linked articles.

  • I am not able to access Firefox under one user account on my computer so I created another account. How can I transfer the bookmarks from the old account?

I use windows Vista and I cannot open Firefox under one user account (I keep receiving the "firefox profile cannot be loaded . . ." error message) on my computer so I created another account. How can I transfer the bookmarks from the old account?

NOTE: you can skip this 1st step.
    Step 1
I'm on Win7 so the paths might be slightly different... C:\Users\(YOUR PC ACCOUNT)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\bnelgkol.default\bookmarkbackups ... Find the "bookmarks-[DATE].json" you want and copy it to the profile you want. You may want to change the date to a name you will recognize.
    Step 2
Then on your browser "Bookmarks>Show All Bookmarks or Ctrl+Shift+B ". This will bring up the Bookmark Organizer, I think they call it Library now. From there click "Import & Back up>Restore" this will bring up a drop down with your back ups. If you followed step 1, find the json you added and select it. If you skipped step 1, from "Import & Back up>Restore" select "Choose File..." Then browser for the json you want to import. Which should be in a similar location as mentioned in step 1.
NOTE: "AppData" is a hidden folder, will have to set show hidden folders to be able to see it.
