How do I restore my computer if when I restart the Mac OS X Utilities screen comes up?
I've tried all of the options, and none of them allow me to either repair, restore, recover from back up, or even erase my main hard drive. All of the options only give me the option to do one of the fixes to one of my external drives.
My computer is a iMac with Mountain Lion Installed. Unfortunately, I can't tell you much more than that b/c I can't access the "About this Mac" function.
HELP! PLEASE!
It appears that your internal hard disk isn't being recognized at all, as if it is not installed. If that is the case the only option is replacement.
An Apple Store perform the repair, or you can. If you elect to DIY I recommend the resources of ifixit.com as a place to start.

When I restart the mac pressing Command R to restore it from the backup it shows the previous OS X (Leopard) beside the date of the backup that I want to select. No, it won't revert to the prior OS X but you you may have third party apps installed that were compatible with Lion that may not be compatible with Mountain Lion.

After you restore from TM, check HD > Incompatible Software -

I tried safe start but it just shuts down after the start ip screen.
I tried starting with the OS disk in but didn't help.

You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

Preview starts up when I restart the mac
It's not really a huge problem - it's an annoyance that I'd like to stop though. For some reason when I reboot my machine the preview application opens. But with no documents. I'm not sure why it occurs and I've looked in the startupitems folder and I don't see anything that would cause it to start.
Any suggestions.Take a look in System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items.

I think ive just done it! I think ive been in Safari clicking file, open files, downloads - and thats where it was grey. i just went from the 'Finder' icon and was able to download its doing it now. i think i need some tuition as i dont know if i wasi n the wrong place initially but i could see the downloads just not click on them. I tried to update the software overnight, and it was still in the beginning stages of the progress bar when I woke up. When I restarted the process I have to restore the phone, its again stuck in the beginning of the process. Does anyone know how long this should take? The beginning sections seemed to fly by.

I've tried to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3. I run the full install and my computer restarts to complete the installation, but when it restarts the software has not upgraded. Any suggestions?
Are you booting from the retail disc to do the installation, or running it while booted from Macintosh HD?
It should work either way, but it doesn't always work when booted from Macintosh HD. The system files are supposed to be moved into place during the restart (while the HD is unmounted) making for a long restart time which sometimes causes people to think somethings wrong and abort it. Which is a bad move.
If you're booting from the retail disc it's less obvious what the problem may be; however if you've tried it from booted from the HD and it's failed, then tried booting from the disc, it will fail again because the system components are already on the HD in a disc image waiting to be moved into place.
Whichever way you were tryig, I'd try downloading OmnDiskSweeper (it's free) and using it to see if there's a large package (around 7-10 GB) lurking somewhere that may contain the installer files. If you do, you'll need to trash that before the installer will see a 'clean' system again.
It's also worth asking how much free space you have on your HD - if there's not enough for the installer to use for the temporary package or dmg, it'll fail.
Was there no warning dialogue after the unsuccessful install?

penteltack,You have purchased Creative Cloud which is active & has no billing issues.
CC mostly asks for serial number if:
1. There is no CC registered to the ID with which you had signed.
2. There are entries of Adobe in Host files of the computer.
3. The activation count has increased.
