How do I restore my computer's software after a hard drive failure?  No back-up.  No disk.

My hard drive on my MacBook quit working.  I didn't have a back-up.  I sent it to a data recovery company with instructions to recover the photos only.  I bought a new hard drive and installed it, only to realize that I don't have any way to get back the operating system or the other software that came with it.  Do I need to bring it in to have a genius do it, or can they send me a disk?  How much will it likely cost?  Why didn't I get a backup disk in the first place?  Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

If you call AppleCare they will be more than willing to help you. Use the appropriate phone number on this page. Tell them you need a support related fulfillment - replacement disks. As shldr says there will be a small charge, but you will be able to install your system again.
Best of luck.

  • How do I restore my pictures to iPhoto after my hard drive crashed?

My 2010 MacBook Pro crashed in Summer of 2012, but I have some Time Machine backups from right before the crash. Once my computer was repaired, I brought it home and did a restore from the TM backup, but my iPhoto pictures didn't come with it. I have lost some photos because of this, but I hope to be able to get them back with your help! I have TM backups from around, before, and after the time of the hard drive crash. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Please description how you retrieve your backup from TM. I have done quite a few of these and may be able to share some experience with you.

  • How do I restore music to my iTunes after new hard drive

FIrst of all apologies if this is really simple .... I'm a bit rubbish with technology ! My problem is that I have had to have my hard drive replaced in my laptop  . I have reinstalled iTunes & music I have brought from iTunes is back on there but I had lots of other music in iTunes that I'd ripped from Cd's ( that I no longer have ) . Is there any way of getting it back ?? All of that music is still on my iPod nano (2nd gen I think ) and is also backed up to a file on my external storage device. I did try just plugging my iPod into laptop but it went wrong & my iPod froze ! So I've given up for now until I get some advice . Thanks

Set iTunes to copy the music to the iTunes Media folder in its preferences, or drag the music to the internal drive before putting it into iTunes.

  • I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

  • Trying to restore my Mac OS  after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

I am trying to restore my Mac OS after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combinationcommand-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • HT1420 how do i Deauthorize a computer that has had the hard drive lock up and can not get it working

how do  i deauthorize a computer that has had the hard drive lock up and can not get it working

You can only deauthorise individual computers directly on them. Otherwise if you've reached the 5 computer limit, then you should be able to log into your iTunes account and 'deauthorise all' (which you can only do once every 12 months) and you can then (re-)authorise up to 5 computers : authorising and deauthorising.

See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • How do I reinstall CS6 Extended 64-bit after replacing hard drive and OS?

How do I reinstall CS6 Extended 64-bit after replacing hard drive and Windows 7 64-bit OS?

You can download the trial installer directly. Find the appropriate link below.
You must be on a trial download page to use the links, otherwise you get an error message.
For example, load the following page: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_elements&loc=us
before pasting the link into the address bar.
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PHSP/13/win32/Photoshop_13_LS16.7z
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PHSP/13/win32/Photoshop_13_LS16.exe
You need to kepp both files downloaded into same folder and after download click on .exe file to extract .7z

  • HT201250 How to restore laptop from time capsule after replacing hard drive

How do I reload all my programs and files from a time capsule after changing hard drive?  Also Apple store reloaded with Snow Leopard and not Lion.  Will that be a problem?  Thank you

Plug the external drive into a computer by usb or whatever box you have available..
When you say blank, is it correctly formatted.. we recommend HFS+ which is Mac OS Extended (jorrnaled)
Make sure you use GUID type disk setup not MBR if it came from PC world.
Copy the files via finder from TC to the external drive.

  • How can I restore my itunes data from an old hard drive?

Hey guys I hope this isn't confusing... but! My motherboard on my computer died yesterday, and I had to buy another computer. I had 2 hard drives in my old computer and also an usb external drive that had all my music on it. Now here is the problem... I only had enough room in my new computer to add 1 extra drive so I put the bigger drive in, but that is not the drive that itunes was installed on. So I was going to download itunes but then realized I would not be able to get my settings back. So here is what I did. I installed the drive that itunes was on to another computer so I can access the hard drive.
So my question is I guess, Is there a file that I can take off that old hard drive and copy it over or import it into my new itunes that was just installed so I don't have to resetup all my ipods ( I have 2 iphones 2 videos, and 1 touch) remember that all the music and video files are on the usb drive so I can just set itunes to look in that drive for the files. it is just the settings that I am looking to import.
    Thanks for any help

It's your PC that needs to be authorized, not the iPods. If you didn't authorize your old PC before it crashed, you have lost one of the 5 authroizations, but I wouldn't worry about it - once you reach 5 authroizations you can deauthorize all, once per year.

  • How do I restore software after new hard drive installation?

I just replace the hard drive in iMac 17" and need help restoring the OS. Apparently the Snow Leopard cd is in the drive because when I turned it on, after a few minutes of churning, the message appeared: this computer does not have enough ram to install OS X. It has two 512 mb ram cards and worked before.

Restart the computer, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option Key and choose the SL disc. After you select the language then choose the Utilities menu-Disk Utility and format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Once you have formatted the drive then exit Disk Utility and complete the SL installation. The SL disc must be an upgrade DVD  it cannot be a Snow Leopard DVD that shipped with another Mac if it is it WILL NOT WORK!

  • Apple is replacing my 27" iMac Hard Drive and when I get it back, I want to know how do I restore from Time Machine to before the hard drive failed

My hard drive (1TB) failed this week on my Late 2009 27" iMac and I took it into the Apple Store.  They confirmed the problem was the hard drive after a couple tests and offered to replace it for $260.  I have everything backed up on my Time Capsule within Time Machine and am wondering how I can restore my entire PC (all my files, settings, etc) from my last back up a couple days ago.  I am assuming it is a simple fix, but I want to have a good plan when it comes back...if there are articles or other threads you can point me to, I would apprecite it.  I am looking forward to getting a refreshed computer back but it would be great to have it fully restore from my last backup.
    Thanks!

  • How can one restore or replace apps lost in a hard drive crash? All usual channels exhausted.

I've restored most of our files from various backup sources but roughly half of our apps have not been restored to our computer. The Apps section in iTunes lists them all, but half have the circled-exclamation-point icon, meaning the files cannot be found (nor does a search on the computer &/or external hard drive find them). The iTunes App Store "Purchased" section does have a list of all purchased apps, but when clicking on a "lost" one, it says that it has already been purchased. There is the "download from iCloud" icon on a few of them (but not most), but not for the ones I really want.
Is there another way to reaquire the apps I've already purchased, but have been lost due to an iMac hard drive crash?
Thank you, helpful person of the future.

I don't know about apps but with music if there is an entry in iTunes, even if broken, iTunes thinks the item is there and doesn't need downloading.  There the cure is to delete the item completely from iTunes and redownload.
