  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

  • How do i restore my pictures from backup

So my old phone is dead and my pictures are on my backup with Verizon Wirelesss.  how do i save them to my computer?

You can try a restore, but read the added comments below.  To restore, Settings>General, scroll to bottom and tap Reset (delete all files on device).  Then attach to iTunes and following instructions to setup.  Along the way you should have the option of restore.  Choose which backup to use.
    Warning...
Many users have lost photos while preforming a restore from backup or upgrading the iOS.  There are no solutions to this in most cases.
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream.  If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as many users have discovered.  I'm afraid I have no advice in this case - there is no "cure".

  • I deleted all mail on server. How do I restore .mac mailboxes from backup?

My .mac mailbox was almost full so I went to my .mac account through my browser and deleted everything and emptied the trash. Then when I looked in my mail.app on my imac all my emails were gone from my .mac account. I have a complete backup, but when I copied to user/library/mail/my .mac folder (which has about 6 subfolders), nothing showed up in my mailboxes on my desktop. How can I restore my .mac mailboxes.? And how do I setup my .mac mail so it doesn't stay on the server at all but only on my own hard drive?

    Hello,
Either resetup your .mac account as Account Type POP, or simply create some On My Mac mailboxes and move the messages from your .mac Inbox to these one or more On My Mac mailboxes (created as New Mailboxes).
When set up as Account Type .mac, it is the same as IMAP, and the Inbox resides on the server, as normally does the Sent mailbox. The strong point of IMAP accounts is that the Sent and Inbox synce between computers since the mailboxes reside on the server. Most people choose a .mac account specifically because the mailboxes reside on the server.
When you first reconnected with Mail, after using web access to delete, it synced the empty Inbox, as would be expected with an IMAP or .mac account. If you have a backup copy of any xxxx.imapmbox folder that once existed on the server, then you can rename that to be xxxx.mbox and Import it into Mail. This would include the INBOX.imapmbox folder from the copy of your .mac account folder.

  • How do i restore sms messages from backup

I had an appointment at the genius bar today and they restored my iphone 4 to factory settings. i was told all my texts (SMS and iMessage) were backed up. I was told to open an iTunes and setup the iPhone as a "new phone" rather than restore from my backup file. Does anyone know how I can restore just the SMS/iMessage part of the backup? thanks!

Actually, there's a way to restore deleted SMS directly from iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS.
If you've ever synced your iPhone with iTunes before, there is also another way: to recover from iTunes backup for all iPhones including iPhone 5 and iphone4S. You just need the help from an iPhone text message recovery tool.
Part 1: Directly recover deleted photos from iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS
1:Connect your iPhone to the computer
At first, please connect your iPhone to the computer and run the program after installing it.
2:Enter your iPhone's system and scan it (iPhone 5/4S users can skip this step)
After downloading the plug-in, you need to get into the device's scanning mode before scanning. You can follow the steps below:
1)Hold your iPhone and click the "Start" button.
2)Pressing the "Power" and "Home" buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds.
3)After 10 seconds, release the "Power" button, but keep holding "Home" for another 15 seconds.
3: Preview and recover iPhone messages
When the scan is completed, choose "Messages" to preview the detailed content. Mark those you want and click "Recover" to save them on your compute with one click.
Part 2: Scan and extract iTunes backup to recover iPhone SMS
1: Scan your iTunes backup for iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS
After installing and running the program, move to "Recover from iTunes Backup File" and you'll get the interface as follows. All your iTunes backup files have been found and displayed. Choose the one for your iPhone and click the"Start Scan" button.
2: Preview and recover iPhone SMS
Only need to check the "Messages" option and hit the "Recover" to save all the messages on your computer.
    3:Do backup well
In order to save your important SMS messages, immediate backup is very useful and important. Please remember to backup them on your computer .

  • How do I restore specific items from backup?

    Hi
My phone had no reception, therefore I went on iTunes and backed it up then restored my iPhone to the factory settings.
The recetion problem got fixed, but when iTunes asked me to restore my backup files on to my iPhone, so I did. then the reception problem came back on again. from here, it's obvious something in my backup files is making this problem happen. I then restored to factory settings again, but this time I set it up as a new device.
now the question is, since the restore from backup function restores everything including the problem, how do I get specific things from the backup files?
and also what exactly is backed up when you choose to backup the iPhone, does it backup things like photos and videos etc.?
    Thanks in advance.

Not true - i don't sync my contacts with another service; they are restored from backup when needed. You can sync them with a service, like Outlook, Google etc, but most people do not know how to do this, so they just use the iPhone backup.
I'm not sure about "most people", unless most people don't read the manual, which gives very clear step-by-step instructions on how to sync contacts (and calendar) to either the cloud or a computer application. Or they skip the manual and look at the screen, which has a checkbox and dropdown to sync contacts to a computer application.
I can think of no reason to NOT sync contacts to an application or cloud service, as the iTunes backup is notoriously unreliable and is easily corrupted.
But you are correct that contacts are included in the backup.

  • How do I restore my iPhoto from Time Machine?

So my 1TB HD died and I put back my 500GB HD that was intact, but the iPhoto library was upto November 2010.
My last time machine back up was May 2011 and lots of Photos and Videos were added between Nov and May.
I went into Time Machine to do a selective restore. iTunes, iPhoto, Documents. would be the preferred.
The data is on the back up, but the "restore" button is greyed out and I can't click on Restore.
How can I get my Photos and video clips back into iPhoto as an overwrite or restore?

For TM questions there is a TM forum
In general you launch Time machine and go back in time to the time you want - select the iPhoto library (by default in your pictures folder) and click restore
What is the reason you are trying to restore an older iPhoto library?
    what does
I can open the old library when I hold option, but it can't get it to stay.

  • How do I restore phone contacts from Backup Assistant backups?

Something caused my contacts to revert to an older version.  I not able to find how to restore them from an earlier Backup Assistant backup.

I'm super sorry to hear about your contacts, dave658! I'm commited to doing all I can to ensure that you're able to restore your contacts. The best option would be to view your contacts online at vzw.com and follow the instructions below:
    1. Sign in to My Verizon.
    2. Locate the I Want To... section.
    3. Click More Actions.
    4. In the MESSAGING column, select Manage My Contacts. The Backup Assistant Plus: Contacts page displays.
    5. Click Sync to Phone. A confirmation message displays.
    6. Click OK.
Let me know if this helps. Have a great day! ^CM

  • How to import photos into iphoto from backup drive to new computer

2008 "Vintage"  iMac recently died. Data was saved on external hard drive. Purchased new iMac, OS 10.9.4, how to get old iphoto library from hard drive to new computer. Iphoto 9.5.1. Thanks

Data was saved on external hard drive. Purchased new iMac, OS 10.9.4, how to get old iphoto library from hard drive to new computer.
Teresa, in what way way the data saved to an external hard drive?  Do you have a copy of your iPhoto library on that drive? Or is it a clone of your old system drive ? A Time Machine backup?
And which iPhoto version did you have on your old Mac?
If your external drive holds a copy of your iPhoto library, you can simply connect this drive your new mac and drag the library over.  It will depend in the version of your old iPhoto, how you can open the the old library. If it is an iPhoto '09 or '11 library, you can aunch iPhoto with the options key held down and select the library as your new iPhoto library.  If the iPhoto version is older, you will have to ru the iPhoto Library Upgrader first.

  • How do i restore music files from backup without changing loosing the library structure?

    hello,
i have 2 external hard drives. i had my itunes media files on one of them and a copy of them on the other one. (the itunes library files are on the internal hard drive)
the external hard drive with the original media files crashed so now i want to use my other disc for itunes. so how do i use the copies of the files and making itunes believe theese are the originals? so i won't have all songs in itunes twice with one of them not working and so i still have all playlists, ratings and playcounts with the new files?

Actually you can do this. Select the song(s) (in a playlist) that you want to delete then hit option + delete. This deletes the track(s) from library as well. You can also select a playlist and press option + delete and all of the songs that were in that playlist get deleted from the library.

  • How can I restore an iPhoto library from Time Machine (ML) - when I TM doesn't see the backup??

    Hi,
I recently did a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) onto an external HDD. Around the time of the last backup, my system was behaving funny so I decided to rebuild the OS X.
Because the last TM backup was of a system that as mentioned, was somewhat 'unstable', and I only had a few backups available (didn't have TM running too long beforehand) - I decided not to use TM to 'restore' my system. I just did  a clean install of ML and planned on pulling files over manually. I'd done this before and it worked a treat.
This time ran into a snag. The backup disk TM used was an external HDD which I wanted to upgrade (suffice to say it works fine). So, I needed to move the backup.backupdb directory to my other HDD. The copy seemed to work fine ... so far so good.
I installed the new ML OS on my MacBook Pro and that was fine too. I was able to pull most of my files over by going into the TM backup and copying what I needed.
BUT, for some reason, this didn't work for the iPhoto library?
Alas, I found that you need to do a 'restore' iPhoto library file from whithin TM. So I fired up TM and noticed that it didn't recognise the old backup file located on the HDD. I.e. when I turned on TM, pointed it to the external HDD (where I copied the previous backup to), it started a fresh backup.
So ... my question is - "How do I restore the iPhoto library if I can't get to it from TM?"
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! The last 15 years of photos are stored in this library!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)
