How do I restore my iPhoto from Time Machine?

So my 1TB HD died and I put back my 500GB HD that was intact, but the iPhoto library was upto November 2010.
My last time machine back up was May 2011 and lots of Photos and Videos were added between Nov and May.
I went into Time Machine to do a selective restore. iTunes, iPhoto, Documents. would be the preferred.
The data is on the back up, but the "restore" button is greyed out and I can't click on Restore.
How can I get my Photos and video clips back into iPhoto as an overwrite or restore?

For TM questions there is a TM forum
In general you launch Time machine and go back in time to the time you want - select the iPhoto library (by default in your pictures folder) and click restore
What is the reason you are trying to restore an older iPhoto library?
what does
I can open the old library when I hold option, but it can't get it to stay.
Mean?

  • How do I open my iPhoto from time machine?

I took my Macbook Pro to the apple store last week and they said there was something wrong with my software and that they needed to wipe it clean. I said I'll bring it in next week in order to back up all my photos. So he told me to buy a hard drive and just click on "use as backup drive" and everything will be backed up. I did so, with time machine and took it back in store to get it wiped clean. I asked the person before they wiped my laptop how I would restore my iPhoto back onto my wiped clean mac and she said that all i had to do was connect the hard drive and then drag iPhoto the dock and it will copy and paste. She said it was easy as that and I was relieved. Now I'm trying to do it but I  copied my iPhoto onto the dock as she said and when i click on iPhoto it's empty. My photos are all gone. I'm really scared now because all the photos I took for the last 3 years were on that iPhoto and now I'm afraid I lost them all. Please help!

You were more than somewhat misinformed. Even if that did work it would have imported one library to another, making a significant mess of your iPhoto Library. The person who told you that needs to read some articles on how to restore from Time machine, like this one:

  • How do I restore my email from Time Machine?

I bought a new iMac and did a complete restore from Time Machine but it brought over too many corrupt settings so I have started again. This time I have done a fresh install and want to just restore particular elements. I want to restore my iPhoto Library, Documents and email (with settings).
Please can post what files I need to restore to recover all my email settings and mail.

Yes, but as far as I can see it does not give me an option to restore mail. I simply get the option to restore say "Library" and I don't want to restore that as it is full old programmes and settings that I don't want.
What I want to do is restore all my old email and email account settings. I would have thought someone would know how to do this it can only be a few directories.

how do i restore photo albums without duplicates from time machine backups? thx

Worth updating?  Totally a personal decision. For some it would be. For others it would not?
Upgrading, if there are no problems, does not affect your data. And since bad things do happen you always have a good backup. Especially when doing any upgrade.
Your password question has nothing to do with iPhoto. Try it in the OS forum

  • How do I restore selected  pictures from Time Machine?

If I want to restore selected documents or music albums/tracks I open Time Machine look at the specific date and select the item and click on restore. But how do I do this with pictures? If I open Time Machine my pictures are nowhere to be found. At least I cannot locate them. If I right-click on IPhoto Library in the Finder in Time Machine nothing happens. At least not Originals as in the regular Finder (this is where pictures are stored in the regular Finder.

Hi Terence, I have the following problem:
-I have many digitalised old pictures that were given the date when they were actually scanned and given a name by the dude who did it
    - so for instance my 1982 picture from Paris is titled 'album 4-picture 2000' and has the date July 2 2009, which does not make a lot of sense in a library
    - so I batch changed all the digitalised pictures for date and title so now my picture has the correct title 'paris' and the correct date July 4 1982
    - now, when I want to restore this particular picture from TM, as you explained me yesterday, I do get the picture but not the new title and date. It will now say again 'album 4-picture 2000' and will have the date July 2 2009
So I only have a problem with date and titles that I changed. TM restores it with the original date and title. And that does not make sense after you have put so much time in changing/correcting all these data. Thanks Adrian

  • How do I restore RSS feeds from Time Machine (OS X Lion)

I inadvertently deleted some messages from a RSS feed in Mail.
It seems that they are located in /users/*username*/library/mail/v2/RSS.
I entered Time Machine and navigated the this directory in a backup and selected 'Restore'.
It seemed to work but when I went back into Mail, nothing had changed.
I tried earlier backups but the same...
Any one have any ideas how to accomplish this?
    Many thanks,
    Jeff

Try with Mail open and active, then enter TM. You should be in the Mail window within TM. Select the RSS folder and back up in time until you see the messages. Then select the messages and hit Restore.

  • HT2477 HOW DO I RESTORE MY BOOKMARKS FROM TIME MACHINE

I just got a new hard drive put into my macbook pro....im lost with this whole time machine thing. how do i restore my bookmarks and playlists?

Do you only want to restore your bookmarks and playlists?
Or, do you want to restore your entire user? When you installed and ran startup, it should have asked if you want to restore from a Time Machine backup. That would have been the simple way.
The bookmarks are stored in your Library/Safari folder. In Finder, hold down the option key while selecting Library from the Go menu.
    Enter Time Machine.
Navigate to the Safari folder and restore the bookmarks.plist file
Then, navigate to your home folder, Music and restore the iTunes folder.
You only mention playlists and not the actual music. If you've already imported your music, I'm not sure if restoring the playlists will actually work as they are indexed on the music files. If your music is stored someplace other than your iTunes folder, restoring the iTunes folder may work. You may also need to restore the com.apple.itunes.plist which is in your Library/Preferences.

Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
A Finder window will open with an item selected. Enter Time Machine and restore the item.

  • How do I restore iCloud mailboxes from Time Machine without losing new mail?

This morning when I opened my laptop and checked my email, Apple Mail decided to flag every single email in my three separate Apple-related accounts ([email protected],[email protected], and [email protected])—some 14,500+ emails total. None of the emails in my comcast or yahoo accounts were affected. Of course, each of the three accounts is set to download copies to my laptop as well as keep them on the server, so now all of those emails are flagged across the board—on my iMac, my iPhone, my iPad mini as well as my laptop. Yay. Since some of the emails were actually flagged intentionally by me over time, I don't want to just unflag everything or I'll lose my flags as well as the ones spontaneously generated this morning.
    My questions are:
    1) If I use a Time Machine backup from last night to restore the three affected mailboxes, will iCloud accept them as the de facto most up-to-date versions, or do I still have to go through some complicated process in order to convince the cloud that the 14,500+ unflagged emails don't then need to be "updated" to flagged status?
    2) More importantly, will the cloud still sync properly so that I still get all of the emails that came since last night? I'm fine if the absence of the more recent emails from the "new" (actually older TM) mailboxes is interpreted as though they've been deleted, since my preferences are set to keep deleted email on the server for a month. But it would be a problem if those emails simply disappear into the ether.
    3) Does anyone have any idea what might have caused the random flagging in the first place and/or suggestions for keeping it from happening in the future?
I remember vaguely that in the early days of Time Machine, restoring iCloud mailboxes was a complicated process in order to trick the cloud into accepting the Time Machine backup as the latest and greatest version. I take it that's no longer such a tricky proposition nowadays, since a search of Apple's knowledge base yielded little information on it. I'd appreciate some confirmation on that, however, so I know what to expect after the restore.
    Thanks!
I'm going to try cross-posting this issue in both the iCloud and Time Machine forums since it's some of both. Apologies in advance if that causes confusion.

I set up an admin account for myself, logged on to it, and then followed the procedure in the help file to delete his account, saving it as a .dmg file.  Then, when he asked for his old emails, I followed the procedure in the help file to restore a deleted user account and copied the contents of the .dmg into it.
I'm not entirely confident I got the restoration sequence right, since I find the order of steps in the help file confusing. But everything except the Mail data seems to be recovered.
Another source of trouble may be the email account settings:  when I opened Mail under his log-on, there were no accounts set up: I recreated them using his email address and password, but Mail may well be treating these as new accounts, rather than re-opened old accounts.
    Thanks, John

  • HT201250 Hi, how do I restore my email from Time Machine, I use Apple Mail, I can't see a folder marked "email" Thanks

Hi, How do i restore my email when it has been backed up in a time capsule, I can see files for photos, documents etc etc, but nothing that says email. i use Mavericks and Apple Mail
Thanks - fist time using this so forgive me if I havent given enough info

The simpliest way to restore Apple Mail emails is to make sure that Apple Mail is the active application running on your OS X Desktop. Then click the Time Machine icon on the OS X menu bar, and then, select the "Enter Time Machine" option. Time Machine should open with a number of Apple Mail windows with copies of your email messages over time.
