How do I restore my new computer to a time machine

How do I restore my new computer to a time machine?

You would normally restore or backup using Time Machine. Time Machine is just a backup utility. Maybe you could be a bit more specific. Do you want to backup or restore?

How can I restore my full system from a time machine backup using a "snapshot in time" older than the most recent time machine backup?
For context: I am doing work on my machine that required making a full backup (in time machine), working on the computer, then doing a full restore. Unfortunately, when I briefly connected the my external disk during step 2, time machine started and added a "newer" backup than the one I need to restore. Any advice?

  • How can I restore my EQ settings from a Time Machine backup?

I recently reinstalled Mavericks, and restored my user account from a Time Machine backup. In doing so I appeared to have 'lost' my personal EQ settings in iTunes, of which I had perfected quite a few to suit various headphones and speakers I've found myself using over the years.
I have a pre-reinstallation copy of the com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist file (found in /Users/username/Library/Preferences) that I believe contains my EQ settings; opening it in Textedit I can see references to the EQ settings I created.
Having tried restoring this particular file from Time Machine and restarting and finding iTunes doesn't recognise the [old] custom com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist file, does anyone know a way I can re-import my old EQ settings, or do I have to try and manually create them again? (gah)
Thanks for any light you can shed on this!

Enter your Time Machine backup (via the TM icon in the menu bar) and find this file
    /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
    and hit Restore.
It didn't reflect in iTunes immediately, but after a restart it appears to read the new (old) plist file. You should have your old EQ settings back.

  • How do I restore a few items saved in Time Machine on a different computer?

After upgrading my G5 Mac to Leopard, and using an external Firewire drive as the Time Machine backup, both of my hard drives crashed on the G5. To make a long story short, I ended up with a new iMac. Luckily, all my data WAS saved on the Time Machine (yeah!!!).
I used the Migration Assistant to copy the applications, user accounts, and network settings to the iMac. And while I don't have the space to move ALL the data from my backups to my new Mac, there are some things I need to move that I haven't been able to find. These are:
    • Old E-mail stored on my hard drive (not the server), most recently in Apple's Mail program (previously in Entourage).(Migration Assistant didn't copy the old mail.)
    • E-mail addresses saved in Entourage (these didn't get moved to the Address Book application).
    • Firefox Bookmarks
    Thanks for your help!

I'm happy to report that I found all my "missing" data...turns out it was just under a different user!

  • HT4927 How do I restore my iPhoto library from a time machine back up of a macbook pro to an iMac?

My Macbook Pro is in a coma, but luckily I  backed up on the 20th May. I managed to get my itunes library back on my new iMac; but cannot figure out how to do the same with iPhoto. Any ideas out there?
    Thanks in advance!

Again - this is not the way to do this and generally does not work - you must use TimeMachine as designed - instructions link again  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
    Note especially
Restoring data from Time Machine backups
With Time Machine you can go "back in time" to restore files, versions of files, or your entire system. Make sure your backup drive is connected and mounted (if not, Time Machine will alert you that "Your Time Machine backup disk can't be found."
If prompted, enter an administrator name and password to proceed with the restore.
    Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu and the restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time (the timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive). If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Mountain Lion and Lion, portable Macs have the feature of local snapshots. See thisarticle for details.
You can also perform a Spotlight search in the Time Machine Finder Window search field to find a file. Simply type the Spotlight search field and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Recovery system (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.
Note: If "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears when restoring a backup that was made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions.
If you are restoring a backup made by one Mac to a completely different Mac
Important: If the backup you are about to restore is from a completely different Mac, use the Migration Assistant to transfer data from the backup, as described in the next section.
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you buy a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made.
You will be asked if you want to transfer files when you start up your new Mac for the first time. Or, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities).
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac.
And again for detailed TM answers go to the Time Machine forum

  • How do I restore the settings for apps using Time Machine?

I believe there are problems with items within the Library Folder inside the System Folder.  For example, there are two "Frameworks" Folders, but one has "(from old Mac)" after its name.  I dare not try to remove or even move either.
Back in the day of OS 9, you could modify something, then search for it by "Last Modified" Date, and find where Apple has hidden itscontents.  It's not so easy in OS X.  I've had some success using Pondini's Time Machine FAQ's, though.  Here is how I got to this problem:
Our family MacBook died.  After getting a repair estimate of $500 to $700 "if it's the Logic Board," we decided to replace it.  We purchased a MacBook Pro running Lion.  (Later, we brought it to an Apple Store and were quoted $435 in house or $280, but they would have to send it out.  Incredible repair: Logic Board, Top & Bottom Case, Super Drive, Battery, all for $280.  No wonder they're #1).  I pulled the Hard Dive out, erased it, and installed an older operating system, but during the repair they installed 10.6.
Restored the MBP from the TM backup of the MacBook. OK
The Macbook is repaired and the store showed me how to restore the data from the TM backup.
Restart and the passwords do not work due to restoring a 10.6 machine from a 10.7 backup.
Tech support guides me through resetting an admin password using the password utility on the install DVD.
changed the other passwords inside of Accounts in System Preferences.  Then changed the password or the other Admin.
Restart, get a circle with a line through it.
Tech support guides me through fixing this.
Restart, half my Apps do not work.
Tech support says to re-install 10.6.
I did but I thought it would erase and install but it just re-installed 10.6.
Most Apps work, except iPhoto.  Mail is OK sending but only receives on one of 3 accounts.
Is there a fix for iPhoto & Mail?  If not, I would plan to erase and use the finder to drag the user folders from TM to the MacBook.  Can I just drag the Apps too?  How about all of the settings for those Apps?

If you don't keep a backup, you can't restore your machine to any state except the state in which you received it, brand new, with none of your own stuff on it. That makes a pretty convincing argument for backing up, doesn't it?

  • How do i restore my itunes and iphoto from time machine?

I backed up my iMac using Time Machine using an external drive, after purchasing a MacBook Pro. I now want to move my iTunes and iPhoto from this iMac time machine backup to my new MacBook, but I can't get past the "you can't open the application because it is in a time machine backup". I attempted to migration assistant and it said it moved all of my applications over, but the songs and photos from my old iTunes and iPhoto didn't transfer. How can I just ******* move the songs and photos to my new computer from my god **** external drive? Why does it have to be so complicated...

    Look at Q15 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
There are separate sections for iphoto and itunes.
It has to be so complicated because Apple made TM to do too much and be too many things to too many people.. a horse designed by a committee. It has become flakey in later editions.
If you still have the iMac you can move the files directly from the source.. you don't need to use TM backups at all.

  • How can I restore my contacts and bookmarks from Time Machine?

A few weeks ago a friend tried to help my wife with a problem on her Mac and unwittingly in the process fiddled with my iMac so that I now have her contact list and her bookmarks and I can't find any way to get my iMac back to the way it was. I have a Time Machine backup, conscientiously kept, and a SuperDuper backup as well. Can somebdy please tell me how to restore my computer to its former state?

To restore your contacts, quit the Address Book or Contacts application. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select Services ▹ Reveal from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Restore the selected folder, or its contents, from a backup.
To restore your Safari bookmarks, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist

  • How do I restore the entire system from a Time Machine external drive?

    Hello everyone,
Up front - I have searched through numerous threads but have not yet been able to solve my problem - even though it is presumably easy for many.
So... I had to bring in my late 2009 27" iMac to Apple to replace the hard drive - mine was one of the thousands affected by the defective Seagate 1 TB disk recall. I was told that the disk would be cloned, but nevertheless I made a full system backup with Time Machine to a dedicated external hard drive.
A week later and I now have my iMac back - but when I boot, I only see a white screen with a pointer, so it appears that the drive was not cloned - but that I now have a blank 1 TB disk, correct?
I have also tried booting with the external drive attached, thinking that the dedicated Time Machine external drive would allow me to boot directly from it and restore the system if need be - I booted with CMD+R, tried again with ALT ... no luck.
And I cannot find my Mac OS DVDs...
So... is the drive blank, or am I missing something here?
If so, how can I boot from the external Time Machine drive, or is that not possible either?
Any pointers greatly appreciated, thanks very much in advance.

Call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD and press C key while your computer is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities menu and restore the backup.
You should have made a clone instead of the backup because Apple gives the hard disk without OS X

  • How do I restore addresses from archive file or time machine without iCloud overriding?

I recently had an issue with my address book contacts.  About 90% of the contacts disappeared, then synched through iCloud to my iphone and ipad.....so nearly all my contacts were lost on all devices.  I have both time machine and an address book archive file.
When I tried restoring from time machine, the iCloud synching saw it as an older version of the file and went to the deleted contacts version....i.e. I was right back where I started.
When I tried importing from the address book archive, the same thing happened.....iCloud saw the imported version as an older copy of the contacts file and deleted out everything I had just imported.
The only way I was able to get the contacts back was to go to time machine (with address book application open), select all the contacts, copy them, cancel out of time machine, and then paste the contacts into the current version of address book.....I guess the system sees that as a "new" version of the contact and doesn't overrite it.  Problem is that it doesn't carry over all the different groups that way, and I have to move addresses into the groups all over again....kinda time consuming.
Any ideas on how to import from archive or restore from time machine (the normal way) without iCloud synching overriding the "older" and desired version of the file?  Address book doesn't have any option to "override current contacts with imported ones".....
    Thanks.

    Try this:
Turn off your internet connection completely: check it's really off.
Import your backup into Address Book.
    Select all your contacts.
From the File menu choose Export>vCard and save the file somewhere convenient.
Now turn the internet connection back on. Your contacts will disappear from Address Book again.
From the File menu choose 'Import' and select the file you exported to.
Hopefully this contacts list will stay in place: wait until it's synced to iCloud and check that it's on the website and syncs to your Phone.

  • How can I restore an old iPhone backup from Time Machine?

    Hi there,
I lost my iPhone 4S but have a extra iPhone 4 (used for travel) that I would like to restore the 4S backup to.
The problem is that the backup of my 4S has somehow disappeared from itunes and the only one that shows up is the iPhone 4 backup even though they are set up as different devices with different names. I know that the backup for my 4S is included with my Time Machine backups (on external harddrive) but I can't find the files. Also very strange is that I don't have the folder "MobileSync" in /Library/Application Support/MobileSync on my computer. I can't find that folder anywhere.
My computer is less that 6 months old and I know that I have not deleted that folder or any other that are preinstalled.
I'm using OS X 10.9.4 and I don't want to restore my hole computer from Time Machine, just the files that hold my 4S backup.
Also note that I have not backed up everything from my 4S phone to iClould so that's not an option.
    I've tried everything including:
    - Restoring the settings on the iPhone 4 to factory settings and then connecting to itunes.
    - Deleting itunes and restoring it from Time Machine at a date that i knew had the original iphone backup.
Who ever can solve this for me deserves a gold medal. I'm truly desperate. I've searched all forums and haven't found a solution for this.
    Thanks.

    caxx wrote:

    Correct.
You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/.
The ~ indicates your User folder not the top level /Library/ folder.
Click on the desktop, then hold Option and go to Finder menu Go and Library will be there (only when holding Option as it is hidden).
