How do I restore old mail from a disk copy of another computer's drive?

My old iMac died  (non-intel iMac running OS-X Tiger) so bought a new iMac with Lion installed. How do I restore all my old emails to the new version of Mail?
I have a drag copy of the old iMac's entire hard drive saved on an external drive.
( This was how I did backups, just regularly drag copy the entire disk of each of my multiple Macs onto a large external drive. )

I have needed to do this today and it was quite simple.
After setting up Mail on the new Mac, from the Mail program;
File > Apple Mail (or other mail client) > Library (from your old Mac volume in the root) >Mail
Then pick the mailbox folder(s) inbox (POP-emailaddress Inbox.mbox) and select Choose.
If you want everything - Inbox, Sent, Draft, Deleted - just choose the whole folder(s).

before a certain date from my mail?

Do they appear in Mail? That is are they listed in a Mail window? If so then scroll down to the target date, select the first email for that date. Hold down the SHIFT key and scroll to the last mesage you wish to delete and click on it. This should select all the messages between your start and end date. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your selection and click on Delete in the context menu.
Oh, be sure you have your messages sorted by Date Received.

  • My computer crashed. how do i restore my content from my phone back to my computer

how do i restore my content from my phone to my itunes on a new computer

    1) authorize iTunes on the new machine for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above covers your purchased content. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

  • How to I import old mail from Netscape to Mail?

I need to move old email from a Netscape account to a Mac Mail account. The Netscape client is still in use, but I must move from Snow Leopard to Lion and I read that Netscape will not work in Lion. So...
I located the Mail folder within Library>Mozilla>Profiles>(Account Name)>XXXX.slt>Mail>Inbox (the Inbox with no suffix). I transferred this file to a jump drive. I verified, I think, that this is the correct file by opening it with Text Edit, and it indeed has email from 2001 to today. The file is 1.58gb in size.
I tried to import it into Mail by adding .mbox to the file and selecting .MBOX in the import window. It seems to import, but the resulting mailbox has mail only from 2001 to 2003.
    Any sugestions? Thanks.

What OS are you using now?  Still SL?   I went straight from SL to LION 10.7.5.
I can't go to ML on my older MBP 17".   Check at the Apple store if you need more reassurance.
The trick is to follow the import instructions and select the main profile "account name" folder.  From there a list of all mailboxes is offered.  Pick and choose the ones you want.
You may have an issue if your single box is excessively large (way over a gig) but I did not.  Better to break them up in smaller boxes first in Netscape if you can.
LION and ML will likely break LOTS of things you rely on (for me Office, mail, contacts, toast, utilities)  Luckily, transferring my Netscape mail was not one of them.
BTW, I still think NS is a better email client and Palm is a better calendar/journal, but apple gets to decide these things for us now.  As with iCloud.  As with maps.

  • How do I restore old emails from recovered data after hard drive crash?

Hi all - I used data rescue II to recover data from a crashed hard drive - seems to have worked pretty well, as the file structure seems to be mostly intact - now I'm trying to find the old emails and get them back in my inbox/sent mailboxes where they belong - any help is surely appreciated - thanks

    Hi Tommybanjo.
Mail stores the messages in .emlx files, but you cannot import individual messages directly, only entire mailboxes. In order to import the recovered .emlx files back into Mail, they must be organized as if they were in an .mbox mailbox, i.e. they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox folder. You may create a folder called Recovered.mbox, then a Messages folder within this folder, then put the .emlx files within the Messages folder, then import that.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them.
Given the circumstances, however, there could be something wrong with one or more of the recovered messages and that might cause the import to fail. If that’s the case, you may try organizing the recovered messages in several smaller mailboxes and try to identify the messages that Mail has trouble with. Alternatively, you may try using emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the .emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that in Mail as Other.

  • How do I restore my bookmarks from a saved file on my computer if it is not a HTML Document file?

Look I had save a copy of my bookmarks on my external hard drive. I had used the file before to restore my bookmarks in the past with no problem. Now it says its not an html doc file. Or when I had to hit the reset button all my old firefox data was saved to my computers desk top in a folder how can I use the bookmark file in that folder. I hope there is a way.

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension:
    * .html for a HTML backup
    * .json for a JSON backup
You can check the type via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
A JSON backup starts with: <b><nowiki>{"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":</nowiki></b>
An HTML backup starts with: <b><nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki></b>

  • How do I download an app from the App Store for another computer?

I have satellite Internet with low bandwidth limits meaning that updating software is nearly impossible without packing up my iMac and bringing it to a library or some other open WiFi spot.  I brought my laptop to the library and updated it with the newest iPhoto, but I would like to update the copy I have on my iMac.
What is the prefer method to do such a thing?
    Thanks.

I tried this with a few other applications and it worked, BUT not for iPhoto.  Interestingly enough my version of iPhoto on my Air is 9.2.2 and is reporting only being 256MB in the Applications directory.  My iMac version is 9.2 and is taking up 1.09GB of space in the Applications directory.  I only have 1 photo on my Air and use my iMac for my photos and editing.  I can't and don't use Photo Stream because of my bandwidth limitations.
Anywya, when I tried to copy the App from my Air to my iMac it crashed the app on the iMac, so I need another solution.

  • How can I restore a mail account with all the old mails?

I just searched the this topic list, and found some articles which seemed to address the same problem, but I was not able to restore the data.
When setting up a new mail user, we erased all the data from the previous user and I urgently need to get that data back - meaning all emails. How can I do that?
    thanks for any help,
    Alexandra

Since I'm assuming this is not an IMAP account, there are only two things you can do.
Restore the mail from a backup, if you have one (it would be in the old users home directory - in /Library/Mail).
Pay for a data recovery service to reclaim the deleted files from the hard disk (assuming you haven't over-written those disk sectors already in setting up the new user - if so, the data is unrecoverable).
P.S. If it was a POP3 account, BUT, the mail had been set to save message copies on the server, then you could recreate the previous mail account and re-download them.

  • I have Time Machine that I used to back up my old computer. It was running snow leopard. My MacBook died, so I got a new one which is running Lion.  how can I restore the data from the time capsule to my new Mac?

I have Time Machine that I used to back up my old computer. It was running snow leopard. My MacBook died, so I got a new one which is running Lion.  how can I restore the data from the time capsule to my new Mac?

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

  • How do I restore smtp mail setting from time machine?

Earlier today I was fooling around with my smtp mail settings and managed to mess them up.
How do I restore smtp mail setting from time machine?
    I'm using Lion 10.7.4
Messages and incoming mail works fine. It's just the smtp mail setting that's the problem.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

The mail rules are stored in your ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~mail/Data.MailData folder, in a plist called SyncedRules.plist.
If you're signed into iCloud D&D, that's where you'll find it.
If you're *not* signed into iCloud, then you probably have a folder called something like ~/Library/Mobile Documents.####### where the # signs are actual numbers.  Digging into that folder, you'll fild the SyncedRules.plist file.
Thing is, I don't know how Mail uses rules without iCloud; if there's a "local" rules location.  There probably is, but someone else who's not using iCloud may have to help you there...

  • How do I "restore" a Mailbox from an archive?

I know how to Archive a Mailbox (Mail > Mailbox > Archive Mailbox > choose a location to store the archive file) and it works.
But how do I restore a Mailbox from this archived file? I have not found ANY reference in the help menu about what to do with an archived mailbox and what it should be good for.
I'd appreciate any pointers to understand this archiving business better. Thanks and cheers, Veit

The reason that I could not find the "Import mailbox" feature: I looked in the Mailbox tab, where one would expect it to be.
Thanks for the solution, it worked perfectly.
By the way: What is the difference between these three Mailboxes?:
    Inbox>Veit (i.e. my first name)
that's the inbox for your email account. you evidently called it Viet.
(I also have one for my wife and for an old POP account) and
    On My Mac, and
    Veit
that's just a local mailbox in "on my mac" section called Viet. it's not tied to any account and exists only on your computer.
Let me know if you can enlighten me there.
    Cheers,

  • How can i restore old backup without deleting my existing data

how can i restore old backup without deleting my existing data. unfortunately i have deleted few of my old photos and restored them from my old backup. i got the deleted photos but lost my recent data and photos. how can i get those too.

You cannot. However, if your back up is through iTunes on your computer and you do an internet search for something like "iPhone BackUpExtractor", I believe there is software that will help you access the SQL database that is your back up. You may be able to pull out what you need.
Once you restore from a back up, any data that was on the phone is gone.

  • How can I restore my data from a backup with different Phone name?

I recently had to restore my iphone which erased all the data. I have a backup of that data in iTunes and I want to restore it to the phone. However when I connected the phone to iTunes the first time after resetting everything, I accidently chose to create a new phone instead of restore settings and data from the backup.
My question is, how can I restore the iPhone from this previous backup? My iPhone is currently called "untitled playlist" and the backup is called "JC's iPhone".
    Thanks,
    Jeremy
ps. Sorry for posting twice. Nobody responded the first time, probably because I had a poor subject.

    Jeremy,
If you restore again, you will be prompted to choose a backup or setup as a new phone again. Then you can just choose your old backup.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.
