How do I restore system software bought through the app store (don't have CDs) using Time Capsule?

I'm having a certified third party vendor install a new harddrive in my MacBook Pro, and have boldly said that I could backup and restore the old drive myself.
All of my data is safely copied on my Time Capsule, a spare external hard, as well as Dropbox (I don't like losing data).  I have an old Snow Leopard CD, but upgrades to 10.8.2 through the app store.  What is the easiest way to migrate to the new hard drive?  Should I clone it first?  Should I load Snow Leopard, then update, then restore from Time Capsule?  Can I restore everything from Time Capsule?

You should be able to boot from the SL DVD.. and then use migration assistant to recover the whole drive.
But the easier way to do it is clone.. you can clone the disk using superduper and clone it back again.. much faster and much more likely to work first time without permissions issues etc.
But.. and this is a big fat butt..
I think you are better doing a clean install of Mountain Lion. And then recover only what you want using TM.. you might need to reinstall your applications from scratch as well.. infact definitely do so.
From a superduper clone USB drive.. you should be able to recover directly by just copying directories of files.. least way.. I would do it that way.
Read the stuff in pondini on the different methods to use TM.

Good to see you thinking about it before rather than after the event.

  • HT6041 does anyone have information re: motion 5.1 ? the latest security bulletin describes the need for it but neither  " software update: or the "app store"  seems to have it.

I have read and re read this security bulletin and I have checked software update and the " app store" and there is no mention of "motion" or "motion 5.1"

FWIW, here is the Apple troubleshooting note for Motion updates that aren't being offered, and the Apple best practices for Motion and related.   Here are the Mac App Store troubleshooting tips.

Just downloaded IOS 6 and it disabled my favorite game, Bubblets Tllt. Restarted and no luck. Tried to download new app and it is gone. Tried to download from website off Safari and message it is no longer sold in the US. Please help. Apple owes me for the cost of this app. Plus Google Maps is infinitely better and that the download kicking it off makes me want to buy an android. And I am not alone is resenting this meddling in my right to keep what I originally purchased. What are they thinking?

    hi Bern
    Firstly welcome to Crowd Support
The Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF) Credit Management code states that Telstra must perform s credit assessment when a customer is applying to us for credit.
For our Credit Assessments to be passed there are many factors of information considered to determine if the Credit Assessment is satisfied.
There are many reasons why a Credit application may be declined, and one of the most common is due to the new Customer not having any previous history with Telstra.
While this may be frustrating for you, in the circumstance of a Mobile Phone contract being involved, we really do need to be sure that we have the correct billing information, up to date contact details and also viability to pay bills on time.
There is a process where this decline decision can be disputed, and I would be more than happy to lodge this dispute for you if you could provide me with some information.
I will send you a PM so that we can work together offline to lodge this dispute.

  • HT1848 Can I give my wife an iPone app I bought from the app store for her to also use on her iPhone ?

Can I use (share) my iphone app on my other (wife's) iphone as well as mine or do I have  to buy it twice?

    Thanks for the points !!!
Any iOS device like iPhone base its sync to iCloud and mail on the AppleID. If you use the same AppleID on 2 different phones you will have the same music, receive the same iMessages, sync the same Calendar and Adress book.

To recover Mountain Lion to your purchases, open App Store > Featured > Account (under Quick Links) > Show hidden purchases, and show OS X Mountain Lion. Finally, it will appear on Purchases tab

That is true - I apologize for not being specific - what I was mainly referring to is iLife applications. I have a notice on the App Store that says 3 apps need updates, I look at the apps and they are huge so since my connection is so slow I use my work connection and d'load the files from support to my Windows machine and carry them home, once d'loaded my MacAir states it cannot install, the update must come from the App Store.
I do the same thing for large Leopard and Lion files and I can install them without error, it is just the App Store files that the system stops.

Have you tried downloading the shows via the purchased tab in the iTunes app? That is where you will be able to find previously purchased TV shows. Try in there, but take note.
Note: Previously purchased TV shows are only available through iTunes in the Cloud in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, and United States.

  • How can I install Mountain Lion in a VMware fusion, if it came with my macbook pro, and not purchased through the app store?

I have Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro with Retina but I want to install Mountain Lion in a VM for application testing. I try to install it from the recovery partition but it states that when I put in my apple ID, it states that it was not purchased through the App Store. My OS came with my Macbook. Is there anything that I can do to get it to install in a VM?
    Thanks

Not really. The license that comes with pre-installed OS is only for that Mac.
    A. Preinstalled and Single-Copy Apple Software License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you obtained the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or under a volume license, maintenance or other written agreement from Apple, you are granted a limited, non- exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple- branded computer at any one time. For example, these single-copy license terms apply to you if you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware.

    B. Mac App Store License. If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/ itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
( i ) to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software...

You should be able to use the OpenVPN Connect app running on your iPad to connect your iPad to the VPN directly. It is an official OpenVPN client for iOS devices.
In what way is it "not compatible"? Have you tried it? Tunnelblick is an OpenVPN client, so your school's VPN is using the OpenVPN protocol. That means any OpenVPN client should be able to access it. (It is possible, but unlikely, that your school uses encryption that is not available on the iPad, but that would be very unusual.)
Otherwise, a remote control app on your iPad would let you control your Mac at home. "Back to My Mac", for example, would allow you to control your Mac remotely. The tricky part of this is that usually a VPN is set up to send all Internet traffic via the VPN server, and I'm not sure how that would work with "Back to My Mac".

  • Is there any way to get the server app other that through the app store. We do not have our system conneted to a network. I typical downloaded items on a non-apple system.

is there any way to get the server app other than through the app store. The system that I need it on are not connected to the internet.
We run a closed-loop network of apple systems and I tipically downloaded updates on a non-apple system that was on the internet.
    Any ideas?

I did buy the server app, went to the app store to download it. This system I'm using for downloads is Snow Leopard 10.6.8, it shows that I can download it but only as an Install which says I need 10.8. I can't seem to find a way for it to just download as a package or .dmg file so that I can copy it to DVD/CD or flash drive.

You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove is not necessarily the one named in the App Store notice. For example, if the App Store says you need to update "Twitter," the hacked app may be "Angry Birds" or something else entirely. Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you have to carry out a systematic search.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
In the Finder, press the key combination command-F to open a search window, or select
    File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
    Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu initially showing Kind. From that menu, select  Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select Raw Query and click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of popup menu. Click in that box and paste (command-V).
The search window will show all the App Store products you've installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
At least one of the items listed in the search window is not among your purchases in the App Store. Move each such item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Empty the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Test.
