Use Pacifist to extract it from your Mac OS X 10.5 DVD and then run the Mac OS X 10.5.8 combo updater.

Note that the method for paying to continue your complimentary storage isn't entirely intuitive:
If you wish to continue your current storage level, the instructions are here:

Scroll down to 'How do I purchase my current plan?' and expand the section applicable to your computer or device.

  • How to restore System Preferences's lock icon?

How to restore System Preferences's lock icon? My Mac's System Preferences's lock icon at the  lower left corner disappeared, how to restore?

The solution is in this 5 Feb 2014 post by Dio Gratia:
"Go to the Security& Privacy System Preferences Pane, click the lock icon, authenticate and hit the Advanced button.  Check the Require an adminstrator password to access system-wide preferences, hit Okay.
The lock icon will show up again on the Sharing Preference Pane.  It should cure the missing lock icon in general."

  • How can i navigate system preferences if trackpad is not working  somehow the option were unchecked

How can i navigate system preferences if trackpad is not working?
Somehow the first couple of trackpad functions were unchecked and since they are not operational I can't click or tap to turn them back on.
I've tried shutting down and restarting and holding my hand on the trackpad for 3-4 sec. then sliding it off (another post had this suggestions).
I don't use the function keys at all to navigate the computer so I am at a total loss if the trackpad does not work.

    Thanks for the response.
Unfortunately this did not work - the tap to click is still not checked - and the tap function does not work.
I did try it twice - and even used a stopwatch to be sure I got the time right.
I noticed there is also an instruction to reset PRAM (was with the SMC reset instructions).  Is that something that may help?

  • How do I restore System Restore?

How do I restore System Restore? I am running Firefox 17.0 on Windows XP SP3.

The pop-up asking if I wanted to upgrade to FF 17.0 had a link to a warning that it might disable System Restore. I clicked “No” for the update not wanting to lose System Restore but 17.0 somehow loaded anyway. Since Mozilla techs knew that 17.0 could cause System Restore problems, I am hoping they will know how to fix them.

How do I recover system preferences which I accidentally trashed from the dock

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Although you removed System Preferences from the Dock, you still have it, because it is stored in the Applications folder.
To get the System Preferences icon back in the Dock, open a Finder window and select Applications in the Finder sidebar. Then, look for the System Preferences icon, and if you find it, drag it to the Dock

Your signature says you have 10.4.6 (Tiger) - is this correct? (If it isn't please keep your signature up to date to prevent confusion). The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements - if you are indeed running Tiger it's possible that you may not be able to.
If you are rusing an Intel Mac you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first to be able to access the Mac App Store - it's available in the online Apple Store. However if you have a PPC Mac you cannot run Snow Leopard and cannot proceed further.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table , and that no system later than Tiger will run the Classic Environment.

Hello! Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

  • How can I download a dvd on my mac osx 10.7.4?

How can I download a dvd on my mac osx 10.7.4?

I am assumming these DVDs are your own personal property and are NOT rented or borrowed DVDs.
Once again, assuming that you own these DVDs, I recommend using Mac DVDRipper Pro to extract the content from your PERSONAL DVDs. I have it installed on my computer and it rips DVD's at maximum speed and uses very little processing power.
You can find more info. about Mac DVDRipper Pro at the following link...
         http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/31118/mac-dvdripper-pro/
... About converting the extracted video to a format that can be played on an iPod or iPad, I'll let someone else take a jab at that.

  • How to Restore System Preferences From Time Machine

    Hi,
Is there any way to restore past system preferences using Time Machine (such as desktop photo, trackpad settings, screensaver, etc.)? I would like to revert to some of these past settings without restoring my whole system from the backup disk & DVD.
    Thanks in advance!

You can do that, but you have to figure out which preferences you want, and what file(s) they're in. And there are about a zillion of them!
Most user-level preferences you set via System Preferences are in one big file:
    *<home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple/systempreferences.plist*
but a few are in separate files, such as:
    *<home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist*
System-level preferences, such as Time Machine's preferences, are in separate files in the top-level Library folder:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
or one of several files in the sub-folder:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguraton
Other preferences, such as all your Mail accounts, rules, etc., are in separate files at the user level, such as:
    *<home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist*

  • How can I start System Preferences from the command line?

    Hello All,
I have an issue I'm not quite sure how to solve. I have been tasked within my business environment  with tightening security on a Mac Leopard system and I've been granted Admin Rights to do this on a temporary basis.
    The problem is as follows:
    1) The original Sys Admin that set up this system is gone, no longer available.
    2) He was a Dvorak Keyboard fan and set up the system for a Dvorak Keyboard.
    3) The system actually has a standard Apple keyboard and is marked accordingly, i.e., qwerty (Most Users in the building have stopped using this system altogether - a terrible waste of a good system - even though some of their apps can be run normally (US style qwerty settings). The command line is useless, as is texteditor.app and a few others unless you know Dvorak layout)
    5) When I open System Preferences, the Dvorak keyboard checkbox is grayed out and I cannot change it. There is no lock at the bottom of that particular screen for me to unlock.
    6) Even though I select the US Keyboard at Login, and some apps work accordingly (like MatLab for example) the terminal is borderline useless. I spent over 2 hrs yesterday doing what should have been able to be done in about 30 minutes. I estimate a frustrating and mistake prone additional 8 to 10 hours to do what is normally a a 4 hour job at the command-line.
    7) I do not have the time or desire to re-mark all the keys on the keyboard, particularly since it is not my call to do so, nor do I have the time to re-learn Dvorak touch-typing, and finally I do not want to re-load the entire system. I just want to change the darn keyboard to a standard qwerty keyboard that is somewhat useful in a terminal environment with vi, command line, etc. It's either that or I go mildly insane
This is frustrating as all get-out. The new Admin logged in and was able to uncheck his Dvorak settings (he is not a UNIX guy, nor is he comfortable om Macs), and we were hoping this was a system wide setting, but No. We re-booted the system, I logged in, still Dvorak, and the checkbox was still grayed out.
So I figure, short of re-loading the entre system and all the applications necesary, I can either start the Systems Preferences GUI using sudo and hopefully that will change system-wide settings, or I can delete the .AppleSetupDone file and resetup the system (if the keyboard settings are part of the setup) without spending a couple of days reloading everything and re-setting up users, networks, etc.
Needless to say, I am hoping for the easiest and quickest solution to this extremely frustrating and  aggravating problem.
    Thanks.

For my situation the following C# code does the job:
        Process.Start(
           @"c:\Program Files\National Instruments\CVI71\cvi.exe",
           @"c:\temp\experiment.c" );
    The file must already exist.

  • How vulnerable is my system preferences?

I just upgraded to 10.3.9 from 10.3.8. I noticed that if I lock a system preference pane (little lock in lower left corner), it will be unlocked the next time I boot my computer or do a restart. Is this normal? My concern is with the System Preferences/Sharing/Services or Firewall. If it is unlocked, how vulnerable is my system to someone else? Especially, the Firewall Pane?
    Thanks,
    YeeHa!

    1. Unless you've performed the instructions on this page, yes.
    2. If someone has physical access to the computer, they can just change the settings.

I'm trying to get back to an earlier version of the System Preferences with Time Machine.  All goes well until I hit restore, and then I get the notification that "“System Preferences” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS X."    Am I doing something wrong?

  • Restoring system preference settings

Can't scroll up and down using 2 finger scroll ? Was changing system preferences and must have screwed them up. Is  there a  way to restore olld settings?

Your condition of backing up without an external disk is unrealistic and can't be done. A backup to an external is required.
Rather then do a restore and reinstall which usually is not necessary, I suggest you read http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html
