Four transfers. After the initial attempt with Migration Assistant failed (after hours and hours of wifi transfer) I did "mini-transfers" of more manageable, smaller bits of files -- my music in one, photos in another, etc. Since posting my question in this forum, i contacted Apple support, chatted with Angela, and she suggested getting an ethernet-USB adapter for my mac, connecting my external drive with ethernet and transferring files manually -- that is, NOT using the Migration Assistant at all. I know this topic i much discussed, but searching has not turned up a solution.
I have a new mac book pro 15 on order and want to grab my files from my time capsule. My old mac book pro 15 (3 months old) was encrypted with file safe. In the past i have never had good results with bringing data to a new mac from time capsules; I've tried many times for my self and family. As a result I use the time capsule for day to day old file retrieval needs and do manual backups of my data onto externals and NAS devices for migration to new computers-tedious but it has yet to fail me. This time, I did that with everything except a few folders of my movies and pictures. They are now prisoner on the time capsule.
What is the best way to get files off the time capsule and does it require that my login and user name on the new mac be identical to that which was on my old mac?
(I change my user names each time i get a new mac, not specifically on purpose but i haven't paid attention to what they were when setting up a new computer.)
any assistance is appreciated.

Help me understand what question you're referring to. I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

I used the Migration Assistant to move data from my Time Machine to my new Mac.   Most data seems to have been transferred successfully but none of my iPhoto pictures have been transferred.
My Time Machine now shows the earliest available Back-up to be after the Migration Date.   My iPhoto pictures seem to have either been lost in the migration process or are locked in my Time Machine prior to the earliest back-up date now accessible.
Any advice on recovering my old iPhoto pictures would be greatly appreciated.

First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

It is confusing why Reynolds Films 2014 is replying to your thread, talking about Photoshop Elements.
Assuming some version of Premiere Elements currently on some Windows operating system.
What version of Premiere Elements do you have and on what computer operating system does it exist?
How did you install your version of Premiere Elements on Windows - installation files from an online purchase or
from installation disc from purchase of the product in box packaging?

You cannot install Premiere Elements Windows installation files on a Mac computer. If you want Premiere Elements
for your Mac computer, you will need to buy a version of Premiere Elements Mac that is supported by your Mac computer.
If you purchased Premiere Elements Windows in box packaging, it probably came with 2 installation discs, one for
Windows and one for Mac. If that is the case, use the Mac installation disc to try to install the program on your
Mac computer.
But, we need the details from you in order to sort out what is and what needs to be done.

How to restore data from my Time Capsule onto my new hard drive

My Macbook's hard drive had to be changed, and I'm trying to restore files from my Time Capsule onto my new hard drive, but all I see are three sparsebundle files (one for each Mac we have at home, including my computer/old hard drive). From that point I don't know what else to do. If I click on it, it opens a dialogue that says "opening volumes" and it stays on that for a while.
Does anyone know how to restore data backed up in my Time Machine from previous backups onto a new hard drive? Does it have to do with these sparsebundle files? Or, is there another way?

What are you trying to transfer? What does the manual say for the Samsung to get whatever data it is that you want to transfer from one device to the other? This may be something you want to ask in a Samsung forum, since you are trying to manipulate a Samsung phone.

How do i move a backup from one time capsule to a new one?

I recently purchased a 2TB Airport Time Capsule (tall style) to replace my 1TB Airport Time Capsule (flat style). I have a macbook air (that doesn't have ethernet) and am struggling to find a way to move the data from my old time capsule to my new one. I attempted to follow the instructions here How to migrate Time Machine backups from one AirPort Time Capsule to another but am not having success because of the lack of an ethernet port on my macbook air. I find it hard to believe that Apple has not developed a better migration path for customers who have purchased new time capsules. Most of the guidance and recommendations i find state that you should "just start over" with new backups. I find that advice to be counter to the purpose of solutions like time capsules. Why would a customer buy backup systems just to throw away their data when they upgrade? Help! I'm hoping there is a better way that I just haven't found.

I have not tried this, but you might want to take a look at an Apple USB to Ethernet adapter. That should give you the Ethernet to Ethernet connection that you need.

How do I restore iCal data from a Time Machine back-up?

Recently, all my iCal data disappeared, possibly due my efforts to unlink iCal from Google calendars.
I have read posts here, and have tried restoring ~/Library/Calendars in its entirety from a Time Machine back-up from about a week ago, where data definitely existed .... however, iCal remains empty. What am I doing wrong?

Aloha: For unknown reasons I lost all my iCal data. I went back in time (pretty neat!) and brought back an old version of iCal that did have the data.
However, now I am unable to use this old vrsion with my present operating system!

How do I retrieve a file from my backup in Time Capsule?
It depends on the type of file that you are trying to retreive.
In general.....
Open Time Machine by clicking on the clock icon on the dock
Wait a few minutes for Time Machine to fully load
Use the timeline at the far right of the window to go back in time to a date when the file was still on your Mac
Click that date
Navigate using the Finder interface to locate the file that you want
Click on the file to highlight it
Click Restore at the lower right of the window to be brought back to the present
