How do I restores my iTunes folder?

I had been using a 2" USB external drive to store all my iTunes music folder, which I over via the "Edit/Perference/Advanced/General to provide the folder, e.g. F:\iTunes.
It had been working fine for a whole year until my XP crashed. Restored C drive from backup, and reset the iTunes folder, only see 55 songs listed under the normal iTunes folder. Changes to the iTunes folder location did not take effect.
How do I refresh the folder changes? Shutdown and restart iTunes after folder change did not help.
Thanks for any info
Jeff

1. close itunes
2. drag the whole folder, which should contents both the music and some files like iTunes Library.itdb iTunes Library.xml etc, over to the external driven...
3. make sure you either moved it, or you copied it and deleted the folder in the original location (if you want to keep itunes music in original location until you have confirmed everything is right before deleting, jump to step 5)
4. start itunes and it will ask for to create a library or choose a library, click on choose library and use pop up finder to select the new location
5. if you do not want to remove your original music library until you have confirmed everything is working first, simply start iTunes by pressing ALT (keyboard button) + click on iTunes icon... you will see the same pop up as step 4 asking you to either create a new library or choose an existing library, in which point you can browse to the external drive and select...
hints: you can always navigate between multiple libraries this way.

HOW CAN I RESTORE MY ITUNES IPHONE BACKUP FROM MY MAC BOOK TO MY DESKTOP MAC? THE REASON IS BECAUSE I HAVE TEXTFREE TEXT MESSAGES THAT I NEED FOR MY ATTORNEY AND WHEN I RESTORE IT FROM MY MACBOOK IT DOESNT INSTALL THE TEXTFREE BECAUSE I HAD DELETED ALL MY APPS IN ITUNES FROM IT. I HAVE ALL THE APPS ON MY DESKTOP MAC BUT I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO EXTRACT ONLY THE BACKUPS FROM THE MACBOOK AND IMPORT TO MY MAC DESKTOP. THE DESKTOP MAC IS THE ONE THAT HAS ALL OF MY LATEST BACKUPS. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER. THANKYOU

Easy. Copy it from the old Mac to the new one.
There are a variety of techniques including Setup Assistant (as soon as you get your new MacBook Air, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another computer), Migration Assistant (if you elect to transfer information later), enabling file sharing between the two computers, or copying your music to a flash drive or other storage device followed by importing it to iTunes.
iTunes: How to move your music from one computer to another
Once your music library and everything else you want to transfer from the MacBook Pro resides on the new MBA, sync your iPod to the MBA. Sync the iPhone too when you get it, and they will both have identical iTunes music libraries.

  • How can I restore my itunes on a new computer from an external hard drive without a back up?

How can I restore my itunes on a new computer?
I use an external hard drive to store all my information i.e. music / apps / movies but my current laptop has just blown up so now using a temp laptop.
I am looking to try & restore my itunes & all of its information like my playlists / apps & everything else from the hard drive but it does not have a back up in the programmes to restore from that.
    Currently running Windows 7.
All I want to do is have my itunes back without the pain of looking & reloading all my info which will take me an age.
Any hints tips or advice that has worked for you would be greatly appreciated.

Did you store the media library files on the external drive as well?
If so press and hold down shift as you start iTunes, use the choose option, and connect to the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.
If not you will need to start a new library and import the content into it. Do you have any devices that might hold ratings and playlists that could be recovered? If so see the second and third entries from the bottom of the table of recovery tools in Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device, and read the rest of it if you have any iOS devices.

    Hey Russfromchicago,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to move content from your iOS device to the computer. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
If you purchased items from the iTunes Store and you've stored them on only your iOS device or iPod, you can transfer them to any computer that is authorized with your Apple ID.

  • How do I restore my iTunes library when "Previous iTunes Library" is not showing up in iTunes folder?

I turn off my PC with Windows 7 for an hour, turn it back on and suddenly the only songs that show up are ones in the Cloud.
I looked through a bunch of questions on the Apple Support Communitities and they all say look for the "Previous iTunes Library" in the iTunes folder, but it's not there.
    Thanks.

  • How do I restore my iTunes library from a backup?

Like an idiot I deleted my Itunes library after backing it up to an external HD. After doing this I deleted my original iTunes library and lo and behold I had no music. I thought I would be able to play them from the external HD but this wasn't the case. I did restart iTunes with the option key pressed and I was asked where I want to take my music from, but when I selected the copy I had made I got a window pop up

I since copied the folder back from my external HD (but not using Time Machine as I use another HD for that), but how can I restore all my playlists I had before, is this possible?

All your playlist info is in the iTunes Music Library.xml file. If you deleted that, you are out of luck. If you can find the iTunes Music Library.xml file in your backup, see if this document can help you: How to re-create your iTunes library, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

  • How do you make an itunes folder?

    Hi,
Whenever I go to download the newest itunes it says "Cannot find /itunes" I accidently deleted it. How do I re-create it?

If you migrate your library properly you don't get the wipe & reload problem. If possible revisit your migration, or use the link at the end to associate your device with the new library.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • I've lost my music, how can i restore my iTunes from a "Previous iTunes Library"?

my music library is still intact but when i try to play my music, it tells me i need to locate it.
I didn't delete my music and i have quite a few important files,
one of my "Previous iTunes Library" has a date when i know it worked,
I still have all the music files working on my iPhone so this is stopping me from syncing my iphone.
How do I reset it back to how it was and get my music back?
Or at least transfer the songs back from my iPhone (They're not purchased)
    Thanks.

For general library squiffiness following an upgrade the easiest thing is to restore your last backup, but I guess if it were that simple you wouldn't be here.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these andcopy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup! For example grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes regardless of drive letter or path.

  • After Lion upgrade, how do I restore my iTunes?

I followed one of the Communities responses to get iTunes to work but then my library wasn't there. How do I restore it? I have Time Machine but where do I look to restore my iTunes library?

Yes, I got it. I transferred it from my external hard drive but my playlists didn't come over. When I tried to sync to see if I could get my playlists back, it didn't recognize the original library. I tried to import the playlists but I don't see how it's listed in the iTunes folder.
This is the only problem I had after upgrading to Lion. That's not that bad, don't you think?
