How do I restrict FTP access to my Mac?

I have a working FTP connection to my home Mac. I want to be able to create accounts for friends such that they can access only select folders. I've played around with it for a few days but I'm stumped.

I'll second PureFTPd
A few years ago, I used PureFTPd when I was serving up downloadable files for other Mac users inside the company. It was a very good solution.
Today, I mostly let the their respective web browsers figure out how to pull files from my Mac OS X web server.
And for my own personal use I've mostly replaced FTP with ssh/scp for remote file transfers.

  • Restrict FTP access

    Hi Folks,
I need your expertise knowledge for the following questions:
    1) How can I restrict users from uploading to the server? Is there a way to restrict that the user only can download files only?
    2) How to secure the ftp access such that the user id and password are not display in clear text?
    Thanks in advance.
    Lawrence

The underlying encrytion mechanism is exactly the same for scp and sftp. scp and sftp both do secure transfer.
I presume it is the matter of choice between the two.

  • Firefox 20 does not support FireFTP, so how do I get FTP access?

FireFTP says it doesn't work with Firefox 20. When I search for add-ons or plug-ins that add FTP functionality, I find none. How do I get FTP access within Firefox?

I have Firefox 23.0.1 but now when I try to use FireFTP I find that all my accounts have disappeared (says choose an account) but the accounts aren't there. I don't know how to get them back and there is no option there to add a new account.
Anyone know how to fix this?

How can I use Microsoft Access on my Mac? Boot camp?

Running Windows or using a suite such as Libre Office. It is similar to Office 2007 for Windows, but runs on a Mac, and contains a database manage that is Access compatible.

How can I use Microsoft Access on my Mac Pro?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Microsoft Access isn't available for OS X, so you can't use it. If you need it, you have to install Windows on a virtual machine.
On a virtual machine, you can install the Windows version you most like and the Access version you need, so you won't have any problem using it. You just need a full Windows version with its DVD or ISO image and product key, and an application like Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox to create the virtual machine. If you want to save money, System Builder versions are cheaper and you can find them at Amazon or NewEgg.
As you have a Mac Pro, I suppose you won't have any problem using a 64-bit version, but it's important you have enough memory. Open  > About this Mac, and check how much memory you have. I recommend 4 or 8 GB of memory at least.
After installing Windows on the virtual machine, you will be able to install Access there.
There are applications for OS X that allow you to run Windows applications without having to install Windows. Those apps often fail, so I don't recommend you to use them

  • How to setup specific FTP access on 10.4 Server??

I want to setup an FTP on our server.
I want to allow specific access to only a couple of users...
Its so a supplier can dump an automated data dump onto the server for us to utilize.
So I want an account for them so they can only access a predefined area, of which 2 other users has access to.
I dont wan't to allow access to any of our other workgroup users.
How would I go about setting this up?
Our website is hosted with a external hosting company and NS are pointing to them and we have a fixed I.P address for our internal mail and everything else etc etc.

    setup sftp instead

  • How can I restrict any access to youtube?

I know I can block the youtube app, but my little brother still gets to it through safari. Is there any way to keep safari up while still blocking youtube?

Not as of right now. There is an app in the app store called McGruff. Apparently it's a browser that allows you to block sites.
There's not enough reviews to know how good it can be, and I've never used it. but I think it's free so y ou can give it a try..

  • How do I set timed access for specific mac addresses?

My daughter tends to stay up late on social media long after we've asked her to go to bed, so I'd like to use the AirPort Utility to just shut off her internet access during set hours. It looks fairly straightforward to set up, however, I don't know how to find her MAC address for her iPod. Can anyone enlighten me?

iPods, IPhones, and iPads do not have a MAC Address.
On the iPod home screen, tap Settings
    Scroll down and tap General
    Tap About
Scroll down to locate the Wi-Fi Address
Use the WiFi Address of an iPod, iPhone, or iPad in place of the MAC Address when you are setting up rules in Timed Access.

  • Windows FTP access into 2nd internal HD

How do you set FTP access into a secondary (internal) hard drive? I am able to set up a user account and can log in (from Windows WS-FPTpro) into that users account (on the main HD), but is it possible to allow them to get into the secondary internal HD?
I checked the "get info" and tried changing the "Group" to the user account, but I still can't get into the drive from my windows machine.
Is this possible with the built-in FTP server in Mac OS 10.3.9??
    Thanks
    G5 - Dual 2GHz Processor   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Hmmm, I just FTPed into another Mac, this one I'm on is owned by bdaqua8, the one I was connecting to was/is owned by bdaqua4, at ftp login, I erased the bdaqua8, put in bdaqua4 as the name, and bdaqua4's password, it took me to bdaqua's Home Folder, but above the file list from the other computer, (not familiar with the SW your using, I'm using TransmitX, but the free Cyberduck is similar), anyway, above that list is a little menu to allow me to change the directory it's showing, backstepped Users, the parent of bdaqua4, backstepped all the way back to Macintosh HD, there was the Applications folders and everything else at root of the disk, I could see all files folders that bdaqua4 could on that machine... perhaps you're missing the path changing thing, or maybe enter / as an initial path when you login?
Leaving work now, but when I get home I'll try your SW to see what is happening.

  • SSH login- how do I restrict access to a shared folder?

I have created Shares in WGM for SMB and AFP access on my OS X 10.4.8 Server. However when I connect via SSH it's not restricting access to the folder based on the User Name I login with- I see the entire volume! How do I restrict access to a specific folder based on a user name setup in WGM? ACL's?

    Hey George,
It sounds like you are trying to limit ssh/sftp users to a specific area, aka jails. The FTP server lets you 'chroot' users to a certain area making it appear as the root thus preventing them from navigating up the hierarchy, which is what I think you, and me and many others are trying to accomplish.
The ssh compiled into OS X is missing this very needed feature. There have been a few documented workarounds, but they've either been too insecure or too clunky for me.
I've dealt with the fact that my users can get to the root of the hard drive, and have just been very careful about my privileges (by using ACLs), thus preventing them from getting inside areas they shouldn't.
There's a good write up here: http://www.schwie.com/brad/macosxsftpchroot/ and if you include the term 'chroot' in your searches, you should find a bit about it here too.
And Roger, I think George meant the file sharing protocol used by ssh. man sftp.

  • How can I restrict access to add. internal hard drive by account?

Hello! Okay, so I am my computer's administrator, and I have a secondary 'guest' account that anyone else can use. So, I know that all my data on my main, OS hard drive is secure from the guest account accessing it, but what about the additional hard drive that I have installed?
I have a good deal of sensitive data and files stored (and aliased) on my second internal drive that I do not care for 'guest' users to stumble upon. How can I restrict access to the secondary storage hard drive from my Guest login account, and/or just plain hide it from it? Surely, there is a need for this that has brought about a solution. Any tips/advice/solutions?
    Thanks!!!
    =)

Click here and follow the instructions followed by placing the folders and files on the image; if the password is in the keychain, it will be supplied whenever you're logged in.

  • How can i restrict user to access database object (procedure) or JSP

    Hi
    I have 9ias infrastructure 902, on win2k box with 9i DB.
and I have one PL/SQL web application and another J2EE application both are hosted by 9ias 902.
Now we are looking forward to couple both with SSO.
I have deloyed samples of both and works fine.
Each application have different set of users, i mean there is no common user.
How can i restrict user not to view the web page which is not authorised to them.
as far as i understand from the Grocery demo is pick the role (which is a string only) from OID and programaticall apply security via if else endif construct.
can any one through light upto my concern.
    regards

    Hey Mary
No i haven't try to do that via pl/sql....
as the our application is j2ee app... deployed in oc4j.. with sso and ldap....
    still finding to do so....
what i have realized that LDAP is just to store user information in inverted tree... and one have to build separated access security mechnisum that will be applicable to j2ee system....

  • How do I restrict wireless network access to specific devices/computers, using an Airport Extreme, when the WPA2 password is able to be found by other devices?

I have set up a wireless network in my office using a couple of Airport Extremes, and, for some reason, our Windows computers are able to view the password of the network. Well, given that we employ teenagers, you can imagine what happens when they all find out the password. We want to restrict network access to only those devices we deem necessary. How do I accomplish this?

    SidMed wrote:
We need 18-20 devices to access, all wirelessly.
You can keep using your Apple routers as AP devices.. but get a router running a secure OS as the actual router that controls the network..
If you have 18-20 teens on the network.. then setting quota and restrictions on bandwidth is far more important than time..
Gargoyle on a cheap router can do it.. eg WNDR3800 or the newer W1024ND v2.
Simply turn off the wireless in these devices.. and use the ethernet connection to the airport as WAP.
Honestly you just will never get the security or control using apple domestic routers.

  • How do I restrict access to JSP or servlet only through SSL Port

    Hi
I want to restrict the access to few jsp and servlet only through SSL port,
so how can I block the acces to those jsp and servlet through normal port??? We
    are using weblogic 5.1.
Any help on this highly appreciated.

    Hi,
To restrict access(56 bits or less). follow the below steps.
    1. Go to your Webserver instance ServerManager
    2. Click Preferences Tab ------> Encryption Preference
------> There disable "DES with 56 bit
    encryption and MD5 message authentication."
for SSL 2.0 ciphers or SSL3.0 Ciphers. Which ever
    needed.
    3. Save and Restart the Webserver instance.
The above steps are for 4.x version.
    Thanks,
    Daks.

How to restrict AS02 (Asset Master Record) access to certain fields only. Currently when you assigned AS02 to a certain user, this will enable the user to change all the fields in the asset master record. hello,
basis has to assign the proper activity with object A_S_ANLKL. in this case they have to allow activity 03 only with combination of Cocode, asset class. see some more details below.
This authorization object is the first part of the object "asset master record."
The definition at this level determines whether the user is authorized to process data in a given company code. The activity type for the transaction is also defined here. This authorization object is used for master data transactions, for the display of value fields, and for reporting.
    Defined Fields
The following fields are assigned to the authorization object
Asset class (specified by entering a value in the pop-up window)
Company code (specified by entering a value in the pop-up window)
Activity type - there are three different activity types:
    01 = Create
02 = Change (including blocking and deleting)
    03 = Display
