How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

I have a new macbook air, and want to transfer all my data using time machine from my old macbook running leopard, is this possible and easy and will it transfer all my musc and photos?

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

  • Flashing folder icon -- how to retrieve data with time machine?

    Hello all --
I was away from home for three months.  When I returned and turned on my trusty 20"  iMac running OSX 10.7.5, I got the flashing folder icon.  I have tried all the recommended methods of restoring the system and nothing has worked.  The processor obviously will no longer recognize the hard drive, which to me means the hard drive has either crashed or the cable connecting the two has failed.  I am not as concerned with saving the unit itself, but with saving my data.  I have a 128 GB flash drive configured as a Time Machine backup that the processor can "see", but I don't know how to transfer that data to another machine or an external hard drive that could be used in one of my other Macs.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

You restore the TM backup to the other Mac. Connect the TM drive to the "new" Mac and open Migration Assistant (Applications - Utilities - Migration Assistant) and migrate from the TM drive. Remember this will create a new user account.

  • How do I transfer files through time machine from old macbook to new macbook pro?

I have Lion on my old macbook and I have saved all my info through time machine.  How do I transfer my files to my new macbook pro?

If you want to restore all you old machine to your new MacBookPro, simply restart you computer in Recovery mode (Hold option key while restarting), select restore from Time Machine Backup, and select the latest or whatever date you like.
On the other hand if you want your new MacBook to use your old TM back, just inherit  that backup using the following command in Terminal:
    tmutil inheritbackup {machine_directory | sparsebundle}
You will find detailed instructions for inherit backups here: http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html

  • IMac died, how do I get data off Time Machine to new iMac

My sisters iMac has had HD problems in the past - we replaced hd at Apple in the past.  I am unable to start the computer up again to look into anything. It was apparently sending out a lot of error messages, the main one being the HD was out of space. I first tried to transfer some big files to an empty external, but couldn't. I tried to restore the OSX, but it failed.  Can't remember the exact message, but I know at that time, I figured the HD failed.   ANYWAY...now they cannot get it started up.  It's old - so they have decided to buy a sparkly new iMac for the house.
Here's my question:  They ONLY backed up with the Time machine - onto an external HD that sits on their desk.  When the new computer arrives, what is the best way to go forward.  Obviously, the easiest is to restore from a TM backup....but is this RISKY being we don't know what was going wrong with the computer? I don't want them to drag over any problems  to a new machine.   Is there anyway to ONLY pull info/data - music and pics - over from the TM backup on the new machine?  I know with a program like CCC which I also use, I think this is an option - but I really don't know with TM??
Should/Can I bring both computers to the Genius bar for something like this ?
Any info to get us started will be very helpful !  Little sis relies on me for help....so I turn to you gurus !
    Christine

Use migrate assistant.. there is a heap of info here.. although it finishes at Mountain Lion it is still relevant to Mavericks.

  • Cannot restore Snow Leopard from time machine from an earlier backup

I've been having a problem keeping my Mac Pro in sleep mode. I have tried disconnecting all USB's including those attached to the monitor. So I have decided to attempt to restore from a time machine backup from about 4 weeks ago to see if that resolves the problem. However at no point in the process am I offered a chance to choose which date to back up from. The restore process just assumes I want to restore from the latest backup.

Inserting the Snow Leopard install disk and launching from Finder. Then selecting 'Restart' which is what the user is told to do in the event of reinstalling from time machine. From that point the Mac restarts and installs SL but uses the latest time machine backup.

  • HT201250 Time Machine backup then install new SSD HD + Pulling files from Time Machine from 'old' HD

    Hi Guys,
I currently have a mid 2009 Macbook pro and I decided to upgrade the current HD in it to an Intel 330 SSD. Which might I add was a *gongshow*.
Anyways before I did the switch I used Time Machine to back up all my information, and to be double redundant I backed up the REALLY important information on a 8gig flashdrive.
The removal and reinstall of the new drive went smooth, and once lion was installed I did all the usual system updates.
Once it came to importing files from Time Machine is when my hassle started.
The last backup I did on Time Machine with the old HD still installed was at 10:00 this morning.
I had the new SSD up and running and a new backup of that created by 1:00 (3 hours later).
When I loaded up Time Machine to grab some files off of my 10:00 backup, it would not let me. The current backups have a Grey/Silver snapshot, and the backups from the OLD HD were blacked out and I could not click on them. What can I do to get these files off my Time Machine from the old HD?
    Thanks

    Quick followup question,
If I do a migrate with the time machine will the system be updated to the version I had when I made it (10.8.6 I think) or will I have to do the system updates afterwards. If so, will that cause any clashes when applying the time machine migration?

  • How to retrieve email and contacts data from time machine from a different computer

My iMac hard disc has died and though I have everything backed up on Time Machine I am finding it difficult to access my Contacts (not on iCloud) and emails from my laptop.
I understand that they are to be found on the Time Machine backup in library/applicationsupport/addressbook and /Library/Mail/V2, but these files appear to be hidden.
From my reading it has been suggested that I use the utility Terminal, but I don’t know where to start with this – any guidance would be most welcome

  • How to add one folder to time machine from an external drive

    Hello,
I just moved my aperture file and a few folders to my external drive (that is always connected). The files on this drive are not backed up normally via time machine.  I don't want to add the full drive to be backed up, just the folder that has the aperture files in it.   How can I do this?

Thank you Terence for your help.  I was able to restore my backup from my time machine ext drive to a new 1tb seagate ext drive.  so i felt sort of ok.  but yesterday that older ext drive i used for time machine wouldn't open! i called applecare and they trouble shooted with me and said it's probably a goner and data is probably corrupted.  it's only a few years old and i'm very careful with it.  my husband accidentally dropped my new drive last night -- i know, unbelievable, i was SO upset, poor guy -- but I'm so stressed with all of this.  i have 10 years of photos and videos.  so now i only have the one newer drive with a backup.  i have to buy another one today to backup again so i at least have two backups.  i tried to delete a ton of files last night to free up the 30 gb of space i need to get my full library back on my mac. i have 90gb free and deleted 7 years worth of photos i had on picasa that were in my "pictures" folder and also a ton or random photos and videos i had in that same pictures folder and thought that would give me the 30 gb but it hardly freed up any space at all!  do you know why that is?  all of this stuff is really a pain and really stressful.  thank god i did have a backup in the first place but now i am panicked the one i have left will somehow crash.  especially after my husband dropped the drive lastnight! it didn't fall far and fell onto a wood floor and seems fine, but after my older ext drive crashed yesterday -- and i lost my entire iphoto library a fewweeks ago off my mac -- i feel cursed.  any answers you have would be great. thank you.

    Hi,
In Windows Server 2008 R2, you can use Regional Options Extension in Group Policy Preferences to configure the date and

  • How can i retrieved data into the infocube from archived files

    hi,
i have archived cube data and i have to load data into the cube from archived files.
so now i want to find archived files and how to load data into the cube.
    thanks

    Hi.....
Reloading archived data should be an exception rather than the general case, since data should be
archived only if it is not needed in the database anymore. When the archived data target is serving also as a
datamart to populate other data targets, Its recommend that you load the data to a copy of the original
(archived) data target, and combine the two resulting data targets with a MultiProvider.
In order to reload the data to a data target, you have to use the export DataSource of the archived data
target. Therefore, you create an update rule based on the respective InfoSource (technical name 8<data
target name>). You then trigger the upload either by using ‘Update ODS data in data target’ or by
replicating the DataSources of the MYSELF source system and subsequently scheduling an InfoPackage
    for the respective InfoSource
If you want to read the data for reporting or
control purposes, you have to write a report, which reads data from the archive files sequentially.
Alternatively, you can also use the Archiving Information System (AS). This tool enables you to define an
InfoStructure, and create reports based on these InfoStructures. The InfoStructures define an index for
the archive file data. At the moment, the archiving process in the BW system does not fill the
InfoStructures during the archiving session automatically. This has to be performed manually when
    needed.
Another way of displaying data from the archive file is by using the ‘Extractor checker’ (TCODE RSA3).
Enter the name of the export DataSource of the respective data target (name of the data target preceded
by ‘8’), and choose the archive files that are to be read. The extractor checker reads the selected archive
files sequentially. Selection conditions can be entered for filtering but have to be entered in in internal
    format
It will remain same in the change log table.
