How do i retrieve file vault protected files from an external hard disk that used to be my mbp's hard drive? the hard disk got corrupted and will no longer boot. I put it in an enclosure and attempted to copy my files but failed because of FV encryption.

This external hard disk used to serve as the main drive of my mbp. It got corrupted and the OSX would no longer load. I upgraded to a 500gb hd and used the old hd as an external drive. I tried to copy my files but i could not access them because of the filevault encryption. 110gb of hd space appears as used which means that my files are still in the drive. Is there a way to retrieve these files? thanks

According to your post, you're using Leopard, so FileVault only encrypts your user folder (unlike Lion). On the mounted external drive, in your user folder, you should see a file called username.sparsebundle, with username being your user name. Double-click that file to open it and it should prompt you for a password. Type in your password and the file will mount as a volume in Finder. You should be able to copy all of your files over.

  • During an update my Mac turned off and will no longer boot into the user interface.

The situation is that I don't have an os disk with me - traveling abroad - and would like to be able to create one using my PC.
    - First is this possible?
    - Second, will I lose my personal data upon system reinstall!
As far as the boot sequence goes is the apple logo and the spinning wheel...
Just thought of this, is there a "last good bootup" option available as an option or some other way to recover without reinstalling?
The situation was that I have a bad battery and the chord was accidentally unplugged... Pretty bummed at this point... :(
    Thank you in advance!

So far I have tried to use the option, and a few other keys on startup, but no-go...
I found a snow leopard install .dmg file download on the apple site, since my MacBook is from 2005, but only have a PC to create the disk image from - if that will even work at all...
Will keep updating as I move forward... Any help is appreciated!

  • How do I restore partial backup of File Vault protected files?

    Here's what happened.
Used TM on an external drive not big enough to do a full backup of my internal drive (with File Vault protected home folder), so I excluded everything but my Documents and Photos folders. I saw TM working, I could browse through old backups in TM and locate files. I know the home directory won't copy when you are logged in and FV turned on, and I never had the TM drive attached when I was logged off, but I didn't backup my home folder, just files inside it and like I said, I was able to view the files in TM.......before my internal drive died.
So now I got my laptop running again and can't restore from TM because I didn't have a full backup. And while I can open TM now and scroll back to previous backup dates, there's nothing in my old users directory except some Acrobat user data junk. I've looked at the directories in Finder and don't see any of the sparse bundle (?) files I've seen in other posts.
    6000 photos. Gone.
Hundreds of dollars of iTunes downloads. Gone.
Please tell me there's a way to recover this. I don't care as much about the music, that's replaceable, but I really want to get those photos back. Is it possible? Was TM tricking me into thinking my photos were backed up when they weren't? I have to be missing something; I need help from anyone that can. It doesn't seem right to show me the files in TM if they really hadn't been backed up.

I never logged out, only restarted after Software Update.
As I noted, TM only backs up a FV User folder after you log out, giving you a notice that a backup is about to start. If you never logged out and have never seen this notice then you have no backup of your FV folder.
The data may still be available on your HD and can be recovered with software and/or commercial data-recovery businesses, but being encrypted makes it much more difficult.
When I scrolled back through my backups, I could browse the Photos and Documents. I prevented TM from backing up Library and Public and couldn't browse those. Where are those partial backups? I feel beyond misled by Apple. How could I have seen (and still see the dates in TM the backups were done) all those things if it hadn't actually backed it up? I could have easily copied my files manually onto the firewire drive (as I was doing before I started using TM). But then I had to delete those backups to run TM on it. Unbelievable. This almost seems criminal.

I´m posting this for a friend... apparently his kids were playing with the machine and now he can´t log in... this is what he gets:
YOUR FILE VAULT - PROTECTED HOME FOLDER NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED. Options: Click OK to repair folder and continue logging in

He is stuck at the log in screen and can´t continue.. please help.
Thanks in advance for any help you may offer

Hi Aaron, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), if it logs him in, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?

  • How to remove preinstalled files of adobe photoshop from my mac mini so that i can install a new version of the same software. The previous version was removed using the app cleaner software.Could not continue installation bcoz of earlier files

How to remove preinstalled files of adobe photoshop from my mac mini so that i can install a new version of the same software. The previous version was removed using the app cleaner software.Could not continue installation of the new version because of the existance of files from the previous version.plz help

What "app cleaner software" ? I ask because installing Photoshop over a previous version has never been a problem. Perhaps your difficulty stems from another source, eg. "cleaner software" ?
If you look in your hard drive, at the root level there is a Library. In there is a folder called Application Support, and in that you will find a folder called Adobe. Files from your previous version are there.
However, I urge you to call Adobe support to make sure you are not doing anything that would mess up other Adobe applications.

  • I took the system file out of the system folder on os 9.2 can't boot to put file back in machine also has osx 10.2 but won't let me boot to either need os 9 compatible boot disk I think?

I took the system file out of the system folder on os 9.2 can't boot to put file back in machine also has osx 10.2 but won't let me boot to either need os 9 compatible boot disk I think?

If the OS X 10.2 on the hard drive is/was bootable, try this -
Restart or boot, then immediately press the X key, keep it held down until you know the machine has started to boot using OS X. This is a hardware instruction to the Mac to boot using the first usable instance of OS X it finds.
Once booted to OS X, you should be able to move OS 9's System file into OS 9's System Folder.
Note - in general, unless you know for sure what you are doing and that the results are desired, do not relocate or rename files in OS 9's System Folder or in OS X's System or Library folders.

If you want just the originals, then you can go into the Aperture library (right click on it and do "show package contents"). Inside is a directory called "Masters" and you can find the original files in a bunch of subfolders.
But... you'll lose all adjustments, keywords, and other information, and just have the files as they were imported originally from the cameras.
Easiest is probably to buy Aperture and update everything, and then migrate to the Photos application down the road if that's what you want. Aperture 3.0 came out in 2010 (five years ago!) so it's not like you've upgraded in a while

  • Read/Open a file in SAP DMS from an external system

    Hello Sap Gurus,
I want to read/open a file in SAP DMS from an external system . External system is basically a non-sap system.
Can this be achieved through an RFC..
Does anyone know of any BAPI's/FM's that can be called from an external system (non-sap system) through RFC which will open a document which is stored in SAP DMS.
    Regards,
    Madan Shetty.

    Hi Madan,
If you want to view documents from an external system, there are many ways of achieving this.
It depends on the solution that you are approaching.
Few methods that I have come across are, OData services, Custom RFC Function  Modules, to retrieve document attachments.
FTP is also a possible solution.
Please let us know your exact requirement.

  • G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive in an external case could I put it into an idle G5 that currently has no hard drive (an elaborate external case, so to speak)? If so, how then to connect the 2

G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive (during the cloning process) in an external case, could I simply install the new hard drive into an idle G5 that has no hard drive in it thus using the idle G5 as an elaborate external case? What cables would I use to connect the 2 computers? Ethernet?  USB?  Could I use the firewire cable that is normally used by my Apple camera (the camera that is an aluminum tube, I forget the name of that thing). The idle G5 is a 1.6 model, would that matter?  Thanks

I personally can think of two options.
    1. Mount the drive in which the copy of the first hard drive will go to inside of the 2.7gHZ G5's case. There is room for two hard drives in there. See Link for Help
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PMG5_HD_DIY.pdf
Once it is installed, simply boot off of your Mac OS Install media (CD, DVD, USB) it can be any version that supports the PowerPC platform. You need to boot holding the "C" key. Then choose Disk Utility and hit the restore tab. Drag the old partition to the "Source" field and the new hard drive to the "destination" field.
    2. Put the second hard drive into the second (idle) G5. You will need a copy of the Mac OS install DVD as again you cannot clone a drive when it is in use (running the operating system). Hold down the "T" key at boot up and then a firewire logo will bounce on the monitor. then plug the cable into the 2.7 g5 and start it up
I hope that this is helpful.
    Long Live the PowerPC G5

On the left, you should have a list of keychains and categories. If not, Select Show Keychains from the View menu.
Select the login keychain and All Items in the Category.
In the search field, type something that will help find your  account keychains, like "gmail."
Select the keychain for your email account password and delete it.
