How do I retrieve my music and apps after installing iOS5 on my ipod touch?

After 'backing up' my ipod, I was prompted to install iOS5 onto my ipod. I then proceeded to install. I knew iit would take some time to install new OS, so I let it be. After about an hour or so I came back to check on my ipod, low and behold, it had none of my music and apps. I still don't understand what my feelings are right now. But I suspect that tomorrow I will be devastated if I cant get my music back. I dont have half of this stuff on my computers. Did I somehow back up 'all' my music somewhere? I don't know. I just spent a half hour waiting for Apple Support with no answer, waiting on my cell phone no less, to answer my inquiry about my missing music and apps but couldn't wait anymore. Does anyone know what the resolution is? Is all my music gone?
Anyways any help would be great.

Unfortunately no. The only way the phone backs up is if you make it back up. You either connect to iTunes and backup and sync, or you set it up for a wifi sync to iCloud. But you have to setup iCloud to start with. You have learned a hard lesson on how to make sure you import pictures on a regular basis like you would the digital camera. When things happen to the phone, this is the media that is lost the most (pictures in camera roll). After taking a number of pictures, and especially ones you consider important, you should connect the phone to the computer and import them, so there is a backup copy on the computer.
Contacts are saved in the backup as well, however they are really designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer, or backed up to iCloud or other cloud service. And, the only way to go back in time on the phone is to restore from a backup, but you also have to remember, you would lose everything on the phone that you had done since that backup, so it is a double edged sword.

If the answer to the above question is "yes", FIRST, set up a backup of your new computer before you do anything else so the next time your computer breaks you will not be in the same situation. It probably means that only one of you can use iCloud or at least sync calender/contacts with it. I would guess that you could manually manage the other phone as you have before.

Well... there really isn't any fully legal way to do this.
The simplest solution is to continue sharing the same iTunes purchasing acct, but create different ones for iCloud (assuming that's why you needed to do the split).
Slightly less kosher: Burn AUDIO CD's, of the music then copy them back to your new account.
BE sure to do this from original acount, To keep the music info, you'll copy over the CDDB file (in prefs somewhere) - since this maintains the data of CDs that you've had in library.... (it isn't carried over onto a user created CD.)

Hello, thank you for your prompt answer. I did have an idea that Home sharing might be the answer but could not quite figure out how to do it. I have enabled home sharing in my iTunes account, put in username and password, clicked on creat etc. But the homs sharing icon doew not appear in the left side of iTunes. So I got stuck. Thanks, Stedman, that is helpful (I seem to be able to get past the "bubble" somewhat) but it is still there....I have, in the past, stroked across the music of choice and that was it...now the "bubble" with the choice name comes up and if I go all the way across I get a delete choice? Can you help with this also or where would I go to research changes (I see there are 200!!!) in this upgrade?

Sometimes the audiobook will play, then disappear from iPod's play menu after I reconnect to iTunes and load more music. I've got plenty of free memory, and iTunes shows the files still on iPod.
....or should I just roll it back to iOS 5... never had these kinds of issues with the old OS.

Try:
