How do I retrieve songs purchased on iTunes?

I had purchased quite a few songs using iTunes, but my HD crashed and i wasnt able to save a few of them. A few of them I have on my iPod, and then some of them I lost in the crash. Is there anyway I can retrieve the songs that I purchased using iTunes?

For the songs that are still on the iPod, the transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7. Look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod", paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
As for any that were lost but are not on your iPod, you could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you may be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download however they are not under any obligation to do so. The policy on lost songs is that you have to pay to download them again: "Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."

Make sure you understand the difference between an Audio File and a GarageBand Project File (also known as GarageBand Song File)
The + sing in the My Songs page is for opening a GarageBand Project File, either a new one or one that is copied vie the iTunes File Sharing mechanism. If I understand you right, then you want to import an Audio File from your iTunes library in a GarageBand Project and not open an existing GarageBand Project.
To import an Audio File from your iTunes Library to an existing GarageBand Project.
Make sure you sync your iTunes Library (all songs or a selection) to your iPad. This is the standard procedure so you can listen to your iTunes Library on your iPad (this step has nothing to do with GarageBand yet)
Once you are in your GarageBand Project, tap the Loop Browser icon (the ribbon) to open the Loop Browser
The misleading part here is that this window can display three tabs, not only the Apple Loops. It also displays any synced audio file via the iTunes Fle Sharing (the tab is labeled "Audio Files) and also any songs that you have synced to yoyr iPad that I just described. This tab is now called "Music".
Look at the screenshot of my previous post. The Music tab provides the same browsing capabilities (Playlists, Artist, etc) as your iTunes.
Navigate to the Kareoke Song (audio file) and drag it onto a GarageBand audio track

You can restore them from your backup - if you havn't got a backup then you'll need to re-purchase them. Media (music, films, tv shows) can only be downloaded from iTunes once, which is why you are advised to make and maintain backup(s) of your purchased (and any other important) content.

How can I export songs from my iTunes to a mail program/computer? The songs in question are originals composed by my boyfriend in Garage Band. We have full rights to them, but they import into iTunes like all the other artists songs. His hard drive crashed and I have the only copies. I have no access to my iMac for 2 months while we tour our show and we need them on the tour. We are in dire straights if we can not access these songs and the iPad will not hook up to our equipment. Plus we need to add a track to a promotional video. So how can we access our own music?

If they are in the iPad's Music app then the only way to get them out of it is by connecting the iPad to a computer. As they aren't iTunes purchases you won't be able to copy them back to a computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, instead you will need a third-party program on the computer to copy them off - there are some listed half-way down this page which should work: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

It seems this is a "backwards" upgrade from Apple in their iTunes 11 release....like you, I used to use that function in the iTunes store to sort through and decide which song version to purchase. (For a large returned list of songs...see all...then sort by any of the headers, including Popularity...this functionality is now gone.)
The iPad always suffered from this...was never able to sort on those same column headers with an iPad. It seems, this new iTunes release killed that functionality on the Mac as well.
Just one of the few things that went wrong with number 11!

I have paused the download in it's tracks, but what I want to know is how I CANCEL THE DOWNLOAD ENTIRELY and completely REMOVE IT FROM THE DOWNLOADS QUEUE.
