How do I reverse a file extension association?

A while back I changed the file association of all my .eps files because they were opening up in preview instead of Illustrator not thinking about all my Photoshop .eps files.
Now, all my PS eps files open in AI. Is there a way to reverse this besides changing each one individually? Maybe a preference I can trash?

You're dead right, it will open all eps in Photoshop, and so move the problem around. Have a look at

MacOS X uses the extension and file type settings to choose the application when opening a file in Finder, while Safari and other applications use the URL and MIME type settings at other times for content not related to a file (such as an unknown URL protocol, or a media stream).

StarOffice 8 CDE Icon and Document File Extension Associations

I recently upgraded to Solaris 10 (5/08). With previous versions of Solaris, I installed StarOffice 7 from CD and it placed the nice little icon in the CDE desktop panel and it created StarOffice associations to all the typical office file extensions (ie. .doc, .xls, etc.). I would like to use the StarOffice 8 that is bundled with Solaris 10. Is there an installation step or some other way to automatically setup the CDE icon and the file extension associations?

I came across the same problem on windows XP SP2 machines.
I created a registry key that forces the file associations as follows:

Problem with AI File extension association

I have Adobe CS4 and for some reason, my computer doesn't recognize Adobe Illustrator as the default program for .ai files. Instead, it lists AIRegedit.exe.
When I open up the Properties, it displays in the type of file field "example.ai" as an .ai file instead of the normal Adobe Illustrator Document.
When I open up "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program" .ai files are listed as "AI File" instead of "Adobe Illustrator Document."
Usually the icon for an Illustrator document is an orange square with inner white lettering, but now it is a white block with a small orange square inside.
I'm novice when it comes to Regedit, so I'm wondering if anyone has had similar problems or suggestions on how I could fix this file extension problem.

something got messed up, usually re-starting is the miracle fix for a number of windows issues. If it does not get fix by itself try this:
right click on an AI file, in the context menu choose "Open With", then go down to "Chose Program...". Find AI CS4, select it by clicking once and make sure to check "Always use selected program...."

How do I remove url file extensions.

HI, I have been told that urls with files extensions are not particularily google friendly and that they pose a potential security risk from hackers - I can't find out how to remove them in muse.

I know I can associate a certain type of file extension to a program by going to Finder, Get Info and apply to all. But I wanted to know what's behind that feature? Are there any way to do that in the Terminal?
The closest I got was SetFile from Developer Tools but how can I see what are the default applications for each file extension?

How to set default .PDF file extension for Form Downloads

I am trying to find a way of setting the PDF file extension when I download forms.
I author the forms under a Plus subscription and am then downloading the forms under a basic subscription Collaborator account (diffrent person)
If I don't include .pdf as the file type when downloading a form with a unique name as the Collaborator, it downloads without a file extension.
Remembering to continually add the pdf file extension is a pain so I'm hoping there is away of setting this as a defaulet for my 'collaborator' account ?

Firstly, apologies for multiple posts, I received messages saying my comment hadn't posted and also checked my history before re-submitting.
Okay, the process is
1. Log in as the Author account and I can rename the file without having to set the extension
2. Log in as the Collaboartor account - same PC, browser etc and it doesn't save with a default file extension; HOWEVER, I have done this whilst also being logged in on a diffrent browser as the Author
3 I have just tried logging out as Author and only being in as the collaborator and the form downloaded with a default PDF.
4. I had someone else log in as the collaborator from thei PC and browser whilst I was still signed inunder my author account and again they were unable to save as PDF by default
This has me wondering if there is anything at play when you've got multiple Users?

How do I make the file extension (ie: .tif, .jpg, .eps) in OS 9.2 visible?

I'm trying to transfer files from an old G3 (OS 9.2) to a new G5 (OS 10.5.8). Most files do not show the extension in their name. For example, an Illustrator eps has the file name "layout_final". When I transfer it to the new machine, it recognizes it as an .EXE file and cannot open. If I type in the .eps file extension, where is now reads "layout_final.eps", it then opens in Illustrator. I don't want to have to resort to manually adding in the file extension to every file. Is there a way in OS 9.2 to automatically show/turn on the extension in the file name?

How are you transferring the files ?
It sounds like you're going through some sort of Windows / DOS formatted media.
If you can network the two Macs together instead, do so.
If you can burn a CD or two on the Mac G3, do so.
If you have to use a USB stick, format it to Mac HFS Extended (aka HFS+) on either and use that.
The key is that if you transfer the files using something formatted for Mac, the file metadata should not be lost, and the files will appear on the G5 as expected, assuming that you have suitable apps to open the files in OSX 10.5

In the file ContentQueryMain you have already a function to get the file without extension.
So we just can use this:

i've finalised a project and exported it. it automatically saved as a .m4v (itunes) file.
my question is:
is there any way to manually select the file extension when saving/finalising a project?
for example, i might be required to save a project as a .mov file.

Publish the movie on itunes then, drag the movie on your desktop. After right click on the movie icon and click get info. Go to name and extension and change the .m4v to .mov . This should work because, it works if you want to change from .mp4 to .3gp etc... This saves you time because you don't have to use a movie converter.

To accomplish this your device need to have an implementation of the Content Handler API (JSR 211)
1. The class that handles the file extension should implement the ContentListener Interface
2. you should register the listener to be notified of new requests

How do I specify the file extensions when opening a file in Labview?

When opening a file, the file open dialogue box appears with a drop down box called 'Files of type *.*
I want to only display files of type IPC, and I will create all my files to have this extension.
I have been using this technique in VB for some time, but I cannot find a method of doing this in Labview so far, can anyone help?

Use the function "File Dialog" and wire your type to "pattern label".

HT4642 how do I save with file extensions in 09.

Numbers 08 had a check box to save a file with the extension (it didn't always work when saving to pdf) but 09 doesn't save the file with the extension (.numbers) by default and doesn't have an option to save .pdf when saving as a pdf. Is there a way to change this or is it not necessary? I'm worried that some clients with older versions may not be able to open the file without the extension.

Export in PDF, Excel, CSV, or Numbers ’09 file formats
Choose File > Export To > [file format] (from the File menu at the top of your computer screen).

How do you change .msg file extensions

I don't know if this is the correct section for this question but I am trying to move all my PC data to my new Mac. Although I have moved most of my outlook data across OK, the section in "notes"has an .msg extension and I cannot get this to translate to the Mac. Any help would be appreciated as I want to store it in Documents in my home folder.
