How do I rid of duplicate songs

I recently turned on my Itunes and it had duplicates of the majority of my songs in my library as well of some songs in the wrong artist folder, anyone have suggestions on how to fix this problem

You can use the iTunes >View > Show Duplicate Items to easily sort out the duplicates you want to delete.
Another option is to use one of the scripts or suggestions here -> how to delete duplicated songs all at one time?

  • I can't get rid of duplicate songs on my iphone or in the itunes.Help

I cannot get rid of duplicate songs on my iphone or on the itunes player on my computer. I also cannot get my songs to play on my iphone in shuffle mode. It just plays the same song over and over again. Any lovely geeks out there?

    Welcome to the forums.
If you have duplicate songs in iTunes you ought to be able to find them by using the "Find Duplicates" function and erase them by highlighting them all and pressing delete. Remember, though, that songs are not necessarily recognized as duplicates if they don't have the same tags (that is, a song can be duplicated but with a slightly different song title and iTunes cannot recognize it as a duplicate and it would be up to you to delete it manually).
Once you've cleaned up iTunes it will automagically clean up your iPhone when you sync it. So work on getting iTunes in order first.
People have complained about shuffle mode on the iPhone. One thing you can do is to create a smart playlist that selects the songs you want and does it randomly. You may have to create one or more of these depending on how you listen to music, but they will indeed give you "shuffled" songs.

Is there any way to recognize and then get rid of duplicate songs? I copied some songs from a different computer and ended up duplicating some of my existing songs. Any way to search for and then get rid of the duplicates?

The apple algorithm for detecting duplicates is not great. I did this yesterday on a library which had got bloated by various itunes 'organisations' and had 15000 songs in it and downloaded idupe. It seemed to work very well and got me down to 10,000 songs. 8USD shareware.

  • How do I get rid of duplicate songs on iPhone?

I have the iPhone 4 and with one of the recent updates, my iTunes changed. Now when my phone syncs with my iTunes library, it has a lot of duplicate songs showing up on the phone. I went through manually and deleted them off my phone, but then when syncing again recently, they were all put on there again. What can I do to get duplicates off there for good?

Re-installed itunes and imported itunes folder but now all songs appear in itunes in duplicate and I cannot find a way of re-organising the library. Is there any way to easily delete the duplicate songs ? In the My Music I Tunes folder some of the files appear in duplicate as well, I presume something related to computer crash. Be sure not to do any work in that gallery in iPhoto while it is in the publishing mode. That can cause problems and duplicates. Sometimes it takes a while to finish.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How to get rid of duplicate files in Windows Media Player 11, I am seeking an answer if at all possible.

I don't know if this is the appropriate forum to ask this question....if it is not please guide me to the correct support forum. I am just trying to find out if there is an easier way of getting rid of duplicate files in my Windows Media Player 11.
Also how do I prevent my Media player from obtaining all these duplicate files from other libraries.  I have iTunes installed and my home network has four other computers belonging in the home group that have all their own respective music libraries.
I guess I was naïve but I thought that when Windows Media Player is out searching other libraries it would know not to take duplicates of songs that it has already.  Enough said .....if anyone out there can help me that would be great.  I have in
the past spent many hours manually deleting songs from my music files and it really got old.

  • Getting rid of duplicate songs: a lot of them!

I've imported my iTunes songs from my old PC to my new iMac but everything has been duplicated so now there is two of every song!!
It's a nightmare deleting each one separately, so any suggestions for a quick solution? Should I delete the lot and then import them again by connecting my iPod?
    Any ideas gratefully received!

If your entire library is on your iPod, it's probably the easiest way to restore the library.
Download Senuti or iPodRip or similar application. You can find the latest versions on versiontracker.com
Proceed with caution. I don't want to feel responsible for possible loss of your library.
If you have set up your iPod to automatically update, set it to manual update first.
Or (this is from the Keyboard Shortcuts)
    iPod shortcuts
Prevent iPod from automatically updating when you connect it to your computer
Command-Option as you connect the iPod to your computer (hold the keys down until the iPod appears in the iTunes Source list)
Then run one of the applications you downloaded and transfer the contents to your computer.
There are other methods to get rid of the duplicates, but the approach to delete them depends on what kind of duplicates you have.
Do you have duplicate song files or duplicate entries in the library.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT1417 how to get rid of duplicates in itunes 11

I cannot find where to get rid of duplicates in the new version of itunes, which I cannot stand.  Can I go back to the old one, where it would let you find duplicates and delete them?

OK I understand. Many of the old iTunes 10 features are still present, but they have been hidden by default.
Bring back your Sidebar with control S and your menu bar with control B. There are icons for them but the control keys are easier to describe.
The View menu will then be visible, where you can customize your viewing preferences and make it appear a little more familiar.
You don't have to remove the old version to update it.
Reverting to iTunes 10 is possible but very tedious.

  • How to finally get rid of duplicate songs.

Hello and thank you ahead of time,
I started this thread because I know I not the only person who has this problem.
How can I get itunes to recognize that two songs that are the same have been imported? and then have it delete one of them.
    Thank you,
    Thor

    To find duplicates:
Select an item below Library or Playlists, and then do one of the following:
    • Choose File > Show Duplicates to find every instance of a song from the same artist from any album in your collection. For example, the same song could appear on the artist’s album and on a movie soundtrack or a compilation album.
    • Press the Option key and choose File > Show Exact Duplicates to find multiple copies of the same song (if, for example, you inadvertently imported the song twice).
To see all items again, click Show All at the bottom of the iTunes window.
You have to manually delete the one's you don't want.

  • How do I get rid of duplicate songs on my iPad that cannot be deleted?

I bought an album very recently off iTunes (Lana Del Rey - Paradise Edition), and when I sync the album along with all my other songs from my mac to my iPad, the album has every song duplicated, with the second song of every copy unable to be played and so the iPad automatically skips these songs. When I try to delete them off the iPad by swiping to reveal the delete button, nothing happens. However I can delete the original songs that were copied from which then leaves me with an entire album with every song skipping the next!
So, my question is, how do i solve this?
I've tried restoring the iPad, unchecking and checking the album between syncs, but to no avail.

  • How do i get rid of duplicate songs on my ipad that are not in itunes

I have multiple devices and recently joined iCloud and iMatch.  My problem is that on my iPhone 4 and iPad when I connect they show that I have 4800 songs on them.  I only have 1400.  The extra songs are not on itunes and are not on the devices.  If I select the device drop down and the look at music I can see all 4800 and it's multiple duplicates of songs that I own with a Syncing symbol by them.  I can not select them, delete them or anything.  But they are taking up space on my devices according to iTunes.  iDeas?  This is on a PC Win 7

    Hello courtney_rae33,
It sounds like you have deleted song music from your iTunes library on the computer but after syncing the phone to your computer the songs are still on the phone. From what you describe it seems as if iTunes and the iPhone are set to Manually Manage the content. This article will help you determine of that is the case:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
Connect the device to your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. If your device isn't visible in the upper right corner of the screen, choose Library.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos."
    Click Apply.
Manually add or remove content on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
After following the steps above, you can add individual songs, videos, and playlists from iTunes to your device. To add content to your device:
    Select your device.
    Click "On this Device."
Then choose "Add to" in the upper right corner.
While viewing the media in your iTunes library, if you drag a song, video, TV show, or Movie a sidebar will appear on the right. You can drag content onto the device.  You can also create and modify playlists directly on the device.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling
