How do I rotate an AVI movie?

This is a weird one, but here goes.
I'm using a Canon SD550, which makes AVI movies. I've got a couple of such movies where the camera was held vertically rather than horizontally. They don't display correctly in iPhoto or Quicktime.
My solution is to use QT Pro, open the properties window and change the visual settings for the video track.
Then I save as, which creates an MOV file. Then I import the new file back into iPhoto and copy the the time and date from the old, unrotated file and then finally, delete the old file.
The problem is that in one case the "poster frame" comes in garbled, no matter what I do. This is not the Quicktime poster frame -- it's the still frame that iPhoto shows you in the iPhoto library. It seems to have been taken from the first frame of the file, but it's all jumbled up and looks like a mess.
Does anybody know whether this is a serious problem? Does it mean the video is messed up somehow (it seems to play fine)? And does anybody know how to fix it?
Thanks very much to anyone who can help.
Steve

Steve,
I haven't tried rotating with QT Pro, but I do have a suggestion for you. My Canon came with ImageBrowser. I don't normally use it because iPhoto is superior. However, if you select a video clip in IB you can open it inside the Video Edit task. It has several functions to edit the clip, including actually rotating it. (By actually I mean that it's not just a display setting.) If you have this app, you could rotate the video clip before importing into iPhoto. I would expect that iPhoto would have no problem creating the poster frame and thumbnail correctly. I have used rotated clips in iMovie with no problems.
I thought QT pro could also properly rotate a video clip, without just changing the display settings. People on the QT forums or iMovie forums (esp QuickTime Kirk) would be able to advise you there.
Regards.

I'm using Macbook Pro Version 10.10.3
I'm trying to play an .AVI movie I downloaded and can't get it to open. I saw a solution online named VLC, but am not sure if I should trust it. The other question is if I did use it would it interfere with normal QuickTime usage?

    Why?

    No, it won't.
An .avi doesn't tell the full story. .avi, .mpg, .wav, .mp3, ...etc. are just wrappers. The content is encoded with a Codec. The codec that encodes the media is the part that matters wrt whether it will play natively.
VLC will decode a multitude of codecs.

  • How can I convert an .AVI movie file to get it into i-movie for editing?

I have downloaded the VLC media player which will open and play the .AVI files from a video camera (RCA Small wonder high def digital camcorder EZ229HD). Now I need to be able to convert these movies (which will only open and play after dragging them to the desktop) to import into i-movie so they can be edited. Anyone know how to do this? The phone support at MAC help said they really can't do any third party stuff so I do not know what to download, purchase, or even if this is possible. Can't imagine a format that won't work with a MAC! Please help. Thank you! Need these for a project.

    Use Handbrake.
You can download it for free from this site:

  • How do I 'rotate' a quicktime movie?

    Hi
    Maybe a dumb question.
My digital camera can take movies as well as pictures.
I have taken 2-3 which I really want to keep but they are in the wrong orientation.
Is it possible to rotate them like you can do a still image?
    And if so how?????????
    Cheers.
    Robin

Is it possible to rotate them like you can do a still image?
    Yes.
    And if so how?
If you have QT Pro, open the clip in the QT Player. Trim the cip to the segment you are interested in if necessary. Open the "Show Movie Properties" window. Select your video track in the upper window area. Select the "Visual Settings" tab in the lower window area. Press the rotate left or right arrow button as needed. Note that the aspect ratio is also changed. If you are merging your segment with other "normal" segments, you may wish to use display offsets when merging the segments and follow up by cropping and/or scaling the final product in an application like MPEG Streamclip before distribution.

  • How do I play an AVI movie from my mac to my tv?

OK; I got a flatscreen + Apple TV. Got a movie on my laptop which I want to watch. But I am only 10.6.8 for good reason.
Is it a simple matter of watching it and mirroring it to the flatscreen? It looked simple, but took hours to do, well, I don't know what, but there was a thermometer so it must have been important work. Appeared to be copying it to Apple TV but I'm not sure of that.
I got to the point of seeing a black screen with a timeline across the bottom... but the spooled portion of that timeline never really moved and so the progress indicator never moved.
So, I gave up and put the movie on another laptop with later system. 10.8.5. It has a Mirroring popup in the displays control panel with looked much simpler. But it couldn't play an AVI file... so I downloaded the recommended plug ins... but still couldn't play it.  What else can I add?

    About Mirroring in OSX
    Supported formats on the ATV:
    Video Formats
H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • How do I convert several AVI movies to one AVI??

I took several movies with my digital camera and I'd like to convert them to one AVI. Nothing special needs to be done, I just want to paste them into one movie for computer viewing. I have QuickTime Pro, iLife, and several other programs. Not sure which one would work.
    Thanks,
    Tom

If the files play without issue in QuickTime you can copy/paste them together using Pro.
If you wish to share these files you may want to export the final file using a QuickTime audio and video codecs.

AVI format can not be recognized by iTunes, so you need to convert the avi to an more mac friendly file like mp4, m4v for adding to your iPhone.
Click to check the solution: How to transfer .avi movie to mac iphone .mp4
Use Appgeeker to convert the file into one that can be played on your iphone. It has a lot of presets that you can use to convert it into the exact format that will play on your Apple products.

    Lindy

I have used the older Windows Media Encoder in Win98SE to make wmv files after I first converted the .mov file to an uncompressed avi file in QT Pro. You might want to see if Movie Maker will work with avi files and export wmv. With QT Pro you also can convert a .mov file to DVStream if that is needed for Movie Maker. I only have acess to WIN98SE so I can't try Movie Maker myself.
I also noticed that earler in this thread I said Pro costs $20. In fact it has always cost $30. Sorry about the goof.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

Since Perian didn't work, it's probably impossible. You may want to post back with the audio and video codec listed under 'Show Movie Inspector' or 'Show Movie Properties' in the Window menu, however.
