How do I run my Mac from an external hard drive

I have a 1 TB WD hard drive and my iMac's internal drive is partitioned so I can use Windows.
The iMac drive is full and I want to move all my music, films etc onto the external drive to free up space.
What is the best way to do this.
Please note when replying that I am not very computer savvy so techie terms will go right over my head.
Thank you.

To move the iPhoto Library to the EHD just drag it from your Pictures folder to the EHD and let the copy complete.  Next launch iPhoto with the Option key held down till you get this window:
Next either select the library that's on the EHD if it's in the window or click on the Choose button, navigate to the EHD and select the library there.  Once you've confirmed that the EHD library is working correcly and all photos are there you can delete the library from your Pictures folder.
NOTE:  the EHD should be formatted as shown in this screenshot:
As for the other two items do a search as rkaufmann87 suggested.

  • How do I run HD Media from an External Hard Drive?

I have a Macbook Pro, with Final Cut 7. I'm editing clips in HD shot with Canon 7d. I have a 250GB external Hard Drive. How do I set it up as my "Scratch Disk" and able to run all the media I'm editing from there too (for Playback, ect). And in the end is it going to effect how I export it for YouTube or anything?

I don't know how to pull media from the hard drive to edit with.
File>Import. Or drag the media from the scratch drive (after you copy it there from wherever) into your project.
But you are specifically talking about Canon DSLR footage. These files aren't huge...they are pretty small in fact. But what they are is a codec that isn't editable. You need to convert these to ProRes, THEN edit. You can use the Canon DSLR plugin for FCP to Log and Transfer them (therefore putting them onto your Capture Scratch), or use Clipwrap or MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert them to ProRes. Google "Canon 5D and Final Cut Pro" and find the wealth of people talking about this.

  • How can i run an application from an external hard drive on my macbook air, since I've got less space on my SSD

Ive got a 128GB SSD on my macbook Air and i know as time goes on ill eventually run out of space so i want to know if their suggestions on how to run applications like google chrome, Skype etc on an external hard drive with out installing int on my SSD.

    Double click on them.
You could create Aliases and store them in a convenient place.
Drag the folder with the apps to your Dock and launch them from the folder on your Dock.
Make sure Spotlight indexes your external disk, then use Command-Space -> name of app -> return

  • How do I run iMovie 11 from an external hard drive to save space on my iMac?

I've recently bought a 1TB external hard drive (My passport) which I want to use exclusively for photos and movies.
I've already successfully transferred all my iPhoto library to the external hard drive which is now the default for iPhoto.
Can I do the same for iMovie 11.......and if so, how??
I want to regain space on my iMac's internal hard drive, as it's nearly full with mainly photos, but some movies.
(I already have a seperate external hard drive linked to Time Machine to back up everything on my iMac)
    Many thanks !

    Hi
It's a very good idea to use an external hard disk to take load off the Main Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk.
BUT there are some VERY Important things to know.
    A. NEVER move via DeskTop/Finder or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Events - or -
    • iMovie Projects
As this will result in disaster (hard to impossibly to mend)
All moving's of Events and Projects must be done Within the iMovie Application to be done in a Safe Way
    B. The External/Second Hard Disk
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted for VIDEO - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO - whatever program is used iMovie or FinalCut or iDVD doesn't matter - VERY IMPORTANT ! ! !
    • Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me especially when filling up. (Thunderbolt might be even better - have non to test)
    BUT when reg. iPhoto Library.
    • Yes it can be moved
    • Yes iPhoto can be directed to find it
    • BUT - iMovie can not find those out-localized iPhoto libraries (AS FAR AS I Learned up to now 12-April-03 - anyone with more insight may kindly set me into a possibly way to do this)
So I've outsource my iMovie Event's (most important as they take space) and Projects (not so important as they are very small - no movies in them only text document conducting how the Events are to be viewed) - BUT iPhoto stays - will not touch it.
    Yours Bengt W

  • How do I run iTunes completely from my external hard drive?

    Here's my dilemma:
My laptop's internal C: hard drive is busting with data - it's full.  So in an effort to simplify and create space, I bought a 1TB external hard drive (F: drive) and moved all of my media, including iTunes, over to it for simplicity and the sake of freeing up space on my C drive.
I have pointed iTunes successfully to the Media folder on the external drive.  What's more, when I download through iTunes, all media is successfully saved to the external drive.  So far, so good.
HOWEVER, try as I might, iTunes keeps creating new library files under the C drive regardless of what I do.  Secondly, I downloaded a movie, which was saved to the external drive correctly, but created a copy on the C drive which I did NOT want.  Lastly, when I transferred an app from my iPad (where I purchased and downloaded the app) to my computer, it copied the app to the C drive which, again, I did not want.
Basically, I'm trying to organize and consolidate all iTunes media files onto JUST THE EXTERNAL DRIVE for simplicity and to remove the confusion of unnecessary duplication, but iTunes refuses to cooperate.
    Any help?!
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

That's not the way to do it. Instead of moving it yourself, you should let iTunes consolidate the new location.
HOWEVER, try as I might, iTunes keeps creating new library files under the C drive regardless of what I do.
You need to ensure the external is on, mounted and ready before launching iTunes.
Basically, I'm trying to organize and consolidate all iTunes media files onto JUST THE EXTERNAL DRIVE for simplicity and to remove the confusion of unnecessary duplication, but iTunes refuses to cooperate.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external.
Hold Shift tand launch iTunes, select Choose library and select the iTunes folder you moved to the external.
    Delete the original /Music/iTunes/ folder.
If you launch iTunes and the exxternal is not ready, you will have an empty iTunes library.
Quit iTunes, make sure the external is ready.
Hold Shift tand launch iTunes, select Choose library and select the iTunes folder on the external.

  • HT1727 how do I transfer my iTunes from an external hard drive to a different computer?

How do I transfer my iTunes from an external hard drive to a pc?

If you don't have all of your music files within the iTunes Music folder structure, simply moving all of your music to a new location will not result in your iTunes library automatically updating the file paths to all of your songs appropriately. If you have a few other locations in which you store your music, you can take the ExportImport script turingtest2 wrote, make the modifications below, export the results, paste them into Microsoft Word or Excel, do a Find and Replace with the correct file location, and then import the new locations. To use the script, follow turingtest2's instructions on this thread as posted on Dec 19, 2012 6:28 AM.
Note that the modifications, while they worked for me, show my lack of experience with VB as the progress bar will no longer work. Definitely be sure to back up your iTunes library file before executing the script with the below modifications, but doing this for 3500 items didn't even take 2 minutes for the script to run.
    Line 89 was:        Prog=True
    Line 89 is now:     Prog=False
    * I had to do this because otherwise the progress bar was erroring out. So, i just turned it off.
    Lines 164-165 were:
'File.WriteLine "<#>" & .Location           ' Not so useful if working with missing tracks
    'File.WriteLine "<Album>" & .Album
Lines 164-165 are now three lines (the middle one is the only uncommented line):
'File.WriteLine "<#>" & .Location           ' Not so useful if working with missing tracks
    File.WriteLine "<Location>" & .Location
    'File.WriteLine "<Album>" & .Album
Finally, insert this whole block around line 270 so that it looks similar to the others:
            Case "<location>"
If T.Location<>Value Then                ' Don't update if value won't change
                T.Location=Value
                U=U+1
                Trace T,"Updated Location"
              Else
                V=V+1
              End If
'If Trace Then MsgBox "Updated Location"
Note that I had to comment the very last line as well or else the program errored out. You won't be able to trace the results either.
Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else needed something like this.

  • How do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

how do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

You should be able to 'migrate them' without having to do so during a reinstall, from an external drive. In some cases, you may be able to use TimeMachine software even if the drive had not been used as a backup.
The usual way, though, is to drag & drop copy from one to another (volume or folder) you created in there and have open. Or drag an item on top of the icon of a hard disk drive when it is mounted on the desktop. I'm used to working with open folders and windows, because that works best; and then see if I want to change how things look inside their destination. This helps should I later want to burn them to a DVD and have it correct. And I want to know where they are.
I had more links to some information about importing or migrating data into a Mac from an external, a week ago, but can't find them now. A few good links to pages, but I think I posted what I did find directly to answer someones question about it; and believe the info was in an Apple Support article about TimeMachine, near the lower part of the page with blue words with a disclosure triangle, so you could read more in that page. But I don't believe these two are correct in that TimeMachine (some versions) only allow wireless backup to a drive in a base station unit such as Apple sells, for this. The link I saw simply said how to work around not using the wireless stuff. Maybe it was a dated item, not in these?
See a main general portal to TimeMachine support,
    here: http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
Or basics that may not provide optional copy methods:
Mac Basics - Time Machine backs up your mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Perhaps a search of Apple Support database (or even ASC discussions?) would yield ideas, and perhaps find what may work for the kind of files you want to copy, and where they can be found & used later. Are the files for specific applications? Or images, music, etc?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

  • How do i import my library from an external hard drive. Exported it as had to wipe pc and reinstal windows but when i try to import nothing happens

How do i import my library from an external hard drive. Had to export it as had to reinstal windows due to a conflict between windows and i-tunes. Wen i try to import nothing happens despite selecting the file. Can you import from an i-phone to i-tunes?

What do you mean bye exported the library?
There is nothing to export or import.
The correct process to backup the iTunes library would be to copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the computer to the external drive.

How do I transfer an iMovie from an external hard drive to my macbook pro iMovie 11?

The easiest way would be to just attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. iMovie should see it next time you open iMovie.
If you are going for portability, you can attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. Then open iMovie.
Then click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK. You should see your external drive listed in the Project Library and the Event Library.
To make a COPY just drag the icon for your project to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library List.
To MOVE it, hold down the command key while you drag.
If you want to edit the project, you will also want any Events, Photos, or Music referenced in the Project. To get those, click on the Project to select it (it is now on the MacBook Pro) and click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA.

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

Mac's cannot run a version of OS X earlier than what was shipped with the machine. For example if your iMac shipped with 10.6.4 it cannot run 10.6.3 or earlier on either an internal or external drive.
