How do I run parallels in the guest account

I recently updated my Mac Mini.  On the old one I was running Parallels, and had the guest account set up to be able to run parallels just fine.  I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything to the new Mac.  Unfortunately, now my guest account can no longer run Parallels.  When I try to run Parallels, a popup window comes on the screen saying "You don't have permission to use the application 'launcher.'"  Even if I click "Always Allow", the next time I try to run it I get the same popup window warning.  I tried following Parallels webpage advice in how to share a virtual machine with multiple users from their website: http://kb.parallels.com/en/9303, but that doesn't help whatsoever.  So now I'm stuck.  What am I doing wrong?  I obviously had this working another time.  I'm thinking that the problem seems to lie on the Mac side, rather than the Parallels side.  Please help!

I have not encountered this specific problem, but I suspect the cure is to reinstall Parallels desktop. Parallels installs some functions deep in the OS and they are unlikely to be transferred using MIgration Assistant which intentionally seeks to protect the operating systemon the target Mac.

  • How can a LabVIEW application be run from the guest account in Windows 7?

I want to make some of my labVIEW applications (no DAQ or external hardware involved) available to temporary visitors in the lab. A natural choice would be the guest account of Windows 7, but if I try to run LabVIEW or any of my built LabVIEW applications, I get the following error dialog.
I am sure this can probably be fixed with a few permission settings. What is the easiest way to allow running these applications from the guest account?

Ah, I missed that article somehow. Thanks!
I actually already made a "labguest" account yesterday with normal user permissions and that works fine.

  • How can I recover files created in the guest account?

I set up a guest account for the kids to use, and my wife then used my Mac to type up a word document (for over 3 hours) and saved it at the end of the evening. The next day she returned, and it had gone! I now read that the "Guest account" deletes all files when the computer is switched off (what idiot decided to make this deletion so immediate and so permanent, I am perplexed, why not at least put them in a temporary folder?).
This document must still be there, surely, just "invisible". Please please, how can I get it back without parting with hundreds of pounds for file recovery document, it is just one file from yesterday!
(I switched from PCs to Mac's when we bought a new Vista laptop at work and couldn't find the "file" and "open" commands on a drop-down menu top-left of screen - the Mac-fans at work promised me that Macs were "so intuitive" and "so much better than a PC". They lied. Macs and PCs are both designed by geeky-types who want more and more complex systems, when all I want is a computer that does what I ask without too much clever stuff (like deleting 3 hours of work because my wife happened to be in the wrong account). I have wasted as long trying to find said file....I'm so depressed.

    Paul -
I'm sorry you've lost files, but when you set up an account as Guest, there's a message that clearly states "When a guest user logs out, all information and files in the guest account's home folder are deleted". If you want an account where files are retained, you should create an Admin or Standard type.
You will need to use data recovery techniques to see if your file can be recovered. The more that you use your computer, the greater the risk that the file will be overwritten. You can contact a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers (which will be expensive, but you can judge the value of the file) or try something like Data Rescue. The latter has a demo which you can install to determine if your file can be recovered, and then, on purchase, you can actually recover the file.
    Good luck!

  • How can I remove the Guest account from the login screen?

I'm very new to the Mac world so pardon this noob question.  But how can I control what user accounts are visible on the login screen on OS X?  I've already went into the System Preference, User Accounts and set the Guest account to disabled.  However this account is still on the logon screen when I reboot the Mac!  How can I remove this account and/or make sure that my user account is the only one visible?

I'm not sure why this worked, but I found this in another post and it worked for me.
Even when the Guest Account / Access is disabled, the login option / and lock screen, still have a guest login.
This is because in Preferences/ Security & Privacy/General the bottom item is turned on.
Turn on: Disable restarting to Safari when screen is locked

  • Can I  run parallels in the new MBA?

I am interested in buying the new released MBA but I was wondering if the new machine has enough power to run parallels.

Yes it will run parallels, even the old model will run parallels. The only limitation in the past was hard drive space. The only current limitation is the amount of RAM available.

  • How do I customize the Guest Account in Lion

There is a discussion thread on how to customize the dock for the Guest account in Leopard <https://discussions.apple.com/message/6511435#6511435> but I do not think it will work in Lion.
I would like to customize the desktop and dock for the Guest account. I want a true Guest Account that will erase files when they log out.

I'd like to go back to the original question. I don't see an answer here yet.
We just set up a new iMac in the front office and need the "Guest" account for those who float through the office. Unfortunately, the way it currently works, each time they open Microsoft Word they are asked to register since the user files are deleted.
I would also like to update the dock removing things they won't use like "Mail" and adding Pages and other applications they will use.
Other constant customizations would be great (setting system preferences like printer, custom desktop, Safari Home Page, etc.) but at least not having them asked to register applications each time would be good.
The original poster, Richard, added a link to how to do it in Snow Leopard, but it doesn't work in Lion.
Anyone figure out how to do this in LION yet?
    Thanks.

  • How Can One Run Only In The System Administrator ( ie root ) ?

Upon creating a System Administrator ( ie root ) in Command + R , of course after Clean Installing OS X ML with my own specific Apple Verified Account ,
i have the Log In screen from a startup , either Safe Boot or a Boot , and i have my own specifc Apple Verified Account , plus the Other... ,

How Can One Run Only In The System Administrator ( ie root ) ?
Is there a way in Terminal with sudo su to make it work ?
Shall i just always log in with Other... System Administrator ( ie root ) , and just forget the my own specific Apple Verified Account ?

As of EHP3, you could still install some EHP components. On an ERP 6.00, you could just push SAP_APP to 6.03 and move on. Now if you want another component in your system with an EHP4 version, you can't have some components at EHP3 and some at EHP4. You would install EHP4 for the new component you desire updated and part of the work will be to also update SAP_APP to 6.04.
EHP4 is an UPGRADE process, with shadow instance & all the joy of an upgrade process. You can either run ressource minimized or downtime minimized. In resource minimized, the shadow instance runs on the same server as the main instance. Downtime minimized allow to run the shadow instance on a separate / new server. Anyway you go, you will always have a "Downtime Phase" when you bring back the updated components from the shadow instance toward the real production one.
As with any UPGRADE project, the benefits of installing EHP4 for your business has to weighted against the downtime cost.
Our tests so far on small systems (few data, few users, 120GB database) show ~3 days process from EHP3 to EHP4 (all components) with a downtime phase of about 22 hours using the "resource minimized" path, i.e. shadow & main instance on the same server (4 CPUs, 16GB RAM). Until you give a try at your Sandbox or DEV systems, you won't have realistic figures for your environment.
    Good luck!

  • The guest account on my MBA restart in Safari Only. How do I disable that?

Every time someone tries to log into my guest account on my MBA, a message pops up stating that the computer will restart in a secure safari only mode. Any ideas as to how to get the guest account back to normal instead of restarting the computer in safari only mode?

I also think separate accounts is the way to go....if he is over 13yrs also remember if you do make an account for him and use your bank card all purchases will be charged to your card.

  • Does any one know how to remove the guest account from the start up screen

ihave had this problem for a while now and still can't make it go away i have be in system prefreces and accounts but i still can't make it out

To expand a bit on that answer, Find My Mac allows you to locate, lock or erase your MBP remotely if it gets lost or stolen.  But that is only possible if the person who finds it is able to log in somehow and get on a network.  Thus the guest account being turned on as long as Find My Mac is enabled in System Preferences -> iCloud.  Note that the guest account does not make your computer any more insecure, but if it really bothers you, you'll have to turn off Find My Mac.  And note that if your computer is stolen while that setting is off, there's nothing you can do about it other than call the police.

  • How can I set up password-protected Guest account

    Hi everyone
I need to set up password-protected guest account. The aim is to get:
    a) an account with password. So only authorized person can use it.
    b) all changes in this account should be overwritten at log-off, just like Guest account behaves.
So I need either to find a way to set password for Guest, either create a 'normal' account and somehow automate it self-cleaning at logoff.
I tried to run terminal and use
    sudo su
    passwd Guest
    [entering password 123]
Afterwards I can't login as Guest at all. System doesn't ask for a password, nor logs me in.
    Thx for any help

This question was asked 2 years ago and still hasn't been answered.
If there is not a way to add a password to guest account, what is the script that get's executed when the Guest account log's off? I can execute that on an account that I create called 'localGuest' or something like that.
I have an enterprising member of my family who has figured out that my computer is exempt from the network curfew and they are using Guest to bypass that. I have since disabled guest; however, I do like using the fresh guest environment to test software development.

  • Is there any way to add a password to the guest account?

We use a computer reservation system for public computers in my library.  I would love to have the functionality of the guest account so the account is wiped after every log out.
The problem with our reservation system is, it requires an account with a password for the system to work properly.  So for the past year, I have been running a standard user account with 3rd party software to lock out the ability to permently change anything on the system.  The problem with this is, it retains any changes users make until the system is restarted, not logged out.  So by the end of a 12 hour day the machine can be pretty screwed up if it hasn't been restarted at some point.
The Guest Account is exactly what I want, but if I can't find a way to add a password to it there is no way for my reservation system to use it.

You could write a shell script to do that and run it on logout via a logout hook:
    http://seeskill.wordpress.com/2012/02/23/mac-os-x-login-and-logout-scripts-demys tified/
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPSyste mStartup/Chapters/CustomLogin.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/10000172i-SW10-BAJCGEGG
I can't be of much help writing such a script. Apple also cautions against such scripts since due to the fact that they run as root they're a security risk. Apple recommends using launchd, something which I have no experience with, but I found a presentation on the basics here that might help:
    http://www.macos.utah.edu/documentation/operating_systems/launchd.html
I don't know of any other way to remove user documents and settings automatically on logout.
    Regards.

  • How do I turn off this new **** Guest account?

In upgrading to mountain lion I checked the 'back to my mac' option in the iCloud setup, this now has enabled a special "Guest User" account which reboots the computer into a locked down Safari-only mode to entice thieves to go online.
I don't want this.  I've disabled "back to my mac", but this account will not go away.
I've tried unchecking the "Allow guests to log into the computer", but it is greyed out and I'm not allowed to uncheck it, even after unlocking the settings.
Lion used to have a setting under Preferences->Security/Privacy->Advanced where you could set an option "Disable restarting to Safari when screen is locked" to turn this off, but this setting is now gone in 10.8
At my wit's end, need to disable this login.
    Any ideas?

My two cents here if you please.
First, I have encountered this back in Lion. Now in ML as well. Let me break this into two parts:
    1. The cause:
IN MY CASE both on Lion and ML, the Guest Account login item appears after you share your folders when enabling Bak to My Mac feature. I have not used FileVault or created a guest user for any purpose. Just creating the shares leads to this.
    2. The cure:
    a) in Lion - exactly as described in this thread - by going to System Preferences / Security - and then unchecking the Restart Safari thing
    b) in ML - (PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS HOW IT WORKED IN MY CASE!!!) - System Preferences/Users&Groups (unlock the pane) - go to Guest User and here UNcheck "Allow guests to log in to this computer" AND "Allow guests to connect to shared folders" (please remember - you may have a different set of options, mine is such probably because I have sharing enabled).  Then, when you close System Preferences and restart the Mac, you should see only ONE user to log in (with picture, no need to manually type in the user name).
One more thing: just in case it mattes - I DO NOT have Find My Mac feature enabled, while ALL other iCloud features ARE enabled.
Hope this helps! Attached is the screen for your convenience.

  • How to keep saved files on a guest account?

i have backed my sisters iphone up onto my guest account. but now i cannot log onto my own account because it says all saved files will be deleted. is there a way to turn the guest account into an admin account whilst im logged onto it?

    I really doubt it.
How about moving the backup file somewhere safe -- an external hard disk, a flash drive, some cloud storage system -- before logging off?

  • Customizing the guest account in Snow Leopard

Has anyone figured out how to permanently customize the Guest account in Snow Leopard. I did this with Leopard by following the instructions at Michael's Mac. However, those instructions don't work under Snow Leopard.

this method still works fine for me although I did all the copying while logged in as root instead of using terminal. also you can do some customization of the guest account using Workgroup manager which is a part of Snow leopard Server Admin Tools

I was trying to do it with sudo rather than logged in as root, which I don't have set up. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
However, I should let you know that there seems to be a very bad bug in snow leopard which can sometimes wipe your main account's home directory after using the guest user.

  • Why is the guest account set up so strangely?

I mean, I give a guest in my house the guest account, and it starts up with address book, time machine, garageband etc all in the toolbar. I mean, why?

Actually, you can change this with a little bit of low-level tinkering, if you feel comfortable doing so. This is adapted from a hint at macosxhints.com to work on 10.6. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully since you're changing the system's defaults.
    1. Make sure the guest account is enabled in System Preferences.
    2. Download and install the latest <a href-"http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1071">Server Admin Tools (link goes to 10.6.4 version). Even though you're not running OS X Server, these tools will give you a nice interface to edit the account settings for the guest account.
    3. In the Applications/Server folder, launch Workgroup Manager. At the login prompt, enter "127.0.0.1" for the server address, and your OS X admin name and password.
    4. In Workgroup Manager, in the View menu, click Show System Records. Now in the main window, if you click Accounts, you should see a long list of "reserved" system accounts. Scroll down and click on "Guest account" to highlight it. Click "Preferences" in the top tab.
    5. You'll see a warning that this is a local change only. Click OK.
    6. On the right, click Dock, then, next to Manage, click Always. The list of applications underneath will activate, allowing you to select, delete, or add any apps you want to appear in the guest dock. Once you've finished, untick "Merge with user's dock" and click Apply Now.
    7. You can now quit Workgroup Manager. Guest login will now have the dock you've customised, and any new standard/admin accounts will retain the normal default dock.
I haven't yet found a way to change the default desktop image for Guest, but I'm sure there's a way...
    Good luck!
