How do I save a movie frame as a still picture?

I like to pause my HD movies and use grab to save a frame as a photo but this new version of quicktime puts a control bar inside the movie frame so my grabs include the control bar. It goes away when running a movie but comes back when in pause and you are trying to use grab. The old quicktime did not have this issue.
If not, is there an alternative way to save a frame?

Or, if you have MPEG Streamclip (free) installed and want some additional/limiterd editing options, simply open the movie in it, move playhead to the desired frame, and select the "Export Frame" File menu option to access additional options as depicted below:

How do I export a .MOV frame as a PNG? Currently, I can only seem to export as a .PCT through "Export Movie to Picture", even when I select "Use: PNG".
Currently, the workaround I use is to export using "Export Movie to BMP", and then converting to PNG with an image editor (but this would be unnecessary if QuickTime is capable of a direct conversion to PNG).

It doesn't seem to be a simple as simply changing the extension.
I ran into this problem when trying to masquerade a QT pct file as a png file as a preview for a flash video. When embedded in the flash player, it would not appear in any browser. (BTW --- It appeared just fine as a plain img in any browser.)
Here was my rather specific fix, which shows that simply changing extensions doesn't always fool every application:
1. Open the png file in a text editor (in my case, emacs) which will let you edit binaries as ASCII text.
2. Look through the file. Assuming that non-ASCII characters are shown in octal with a preceding \, you'll see the following
\377\377\211PNG
3. Delete everything until just after the two \377 characters, so that the file starts with \211PNG. (If you are editing in hex, look for ff ff 89 50, and delete up through the ff ff.)
4. Save the file.
After doing this, it embedded just fine.
So.... simply swapping the pct extension for png isn't a true fix in all ways. I'm guessing that pulling off the start of the file tears off the wrapper alluded to above.

Hi,
See if the old version of iMovie is still in your Applications folder. I re-activated mine. Evidently, in their infinite wisdom Apple decided that they want to force their followers into the Cloud and that DVD operations are yesterday. Frankly, I think it very presumptuous of them to make that decision for us. I intend to lodge an official complaint.

After it's recorded, try playing it back by double-clicking on it. Then you will see an iPhoto icon in the tool bar just to the left of the play button. Click on that. It will export that video clip to iPhoto. When it's done it try to open iPhoto, if it doesn't just launch iPhoto yourself. And then look for the Last Import. Your video should appear under that Last Import icon. Double-click your movie also in iPhoto just to make sure it plays back. Quit iPhoto. Now open iMovie and look for the iPhoto Videos icon in the Event Library in iMovie. Click on that and if it asks to create Thumbnails choose "Now" instad of Later. Once it completes making the thumbnails you'll see your video. Drag that video into the Project Browser (the top half of the iMovie Window). Click the play button and watch it in the Preview window. Then to export it out go to Share Menu > Export Movie (choose Large size) and save it to the Desktop. It's that EZ!

Import it to iTunes by drag to the open iTunes Music window.
Mark it there by clickin once.
Go to the menu and search for "new version for…" .
Wait, if ready, right-click the new file once and you can see it in the finder to work with it.
But do not change location.
Only work with a duplicate by holding down option key when dragging to an other place.
If you want to delete it from its original location, do it within iTunes.

When I freeze a frame, it allows me to change formats-which is great. But, I want the path to go directly into the project bin (CS2-the last version I used) did this automatically, or there was a setting set up for that. Now I have to click import and then import each one.

Feature Request: Please fix the freeze frame feature in CS5. In older vesions you were allowed to set the path to save the freeze frame directly to the project bin in the current/working project. It is nice that there is a button for the freeze frame , but the feature to go DIRECTLY to the project bin is gone so we have to take an extra step in editing and import and search and that is a waste of time. Cutting one Frame for a Still Picture

I have iMovie '08 and want to know if there is a way to select and copy one frame and make it a picture I can put on my web site. If so, how do I go about doing this? I have tried the control, select method and just get short clips, when I really just want the one frame for a still photograph.
One of the reasons I wanted this camera was because I thought I would be able to get some great "stop action" shots for my web site.

In iMovie 08, one way you can do this is to scroll to the frame you want to use, ( in project or the clip browser, either place) then +*right-click the mouse*+ (control click), and choose *add still frame to project*
The frame you want will be added at the end (if it's in project window)
Then, to access this image, right-click (control click) it and choose +*reveal in finder*+. Then you can open it in preview (or other app) and save it Or from finder window: move it) to wherever you want to store it on the HD.

I have produced a movie from a group of video clips in imovie 10.0.6 on my macbook pro using osx 10.10.1.
This is where it ends. I cannot share it with a file to burn it to a disk. Further I cannot drag and drop this "movie" into an app, because it breaks it up into original clips.

It sounds like you have completed the project and now need to get it burned to a dvd with a 3rd party app. You should be able to open the project and share it as a Quicktime file with these steps from the iMovie help site:
Export a QuickTime file - iMovie Help
Select a movie, trailer, or clip in the browser.
Click the Share button in the toolbar, and then click File.
In the dialog that appears, do any of the following:
To set the title of the shared movie: Click the name at the top, and type a new name.
To set the description of the shared movie: Click in the Description field, and type new text.
To set the output format of the shared movie: Choose an option from the Format pop-up menu.
You can choose to export video and audio, or just audio.
To set tags for the shared movie: Click in the Tags field, and type tag names separated by commas.
To set the resolution of the shared movie: Choose an option from the Resolution pop-up menu.
Unavailable resolutions appear dimmed.
Tip: You can export a 4K clip in its native resolution by selecting a 4K clip in the browser.
To set the output quality of the shared movie: Choose an option from the Quality pop-up menu.
To manually set the output quality of the shared movie, choose Custom from the Quality pop-up menu, and drag the slider to set the target bit rate.
As you drag the slider, the estimated file size that appears below the preview thumbnail is updated.
To add your movie to the Theater: Select the Add to Theater checkbox.
Click Next.
In the dialog that appears, type a name in the Save As field, or leave the default name, which is the name of the movie, trailer, or clip.
Navigate to the location where you want to save the file, and click Save.
A progress indicator appears on the right side of the toolbar. Click the progress indicator to see details. The indicator disappears when the operation has finished.
After the share process is complete, the movie opens in QuickTime Player. A “Share Successful” notification also appears.

I don't see any save as tab. It looks as if the only way I can save a project is to use the share tab and share in a file but there's no options that let you save it as a HD video. In 9 there were various formats you could use that would save your video with better quality but I don't see where I can do that in imovie 10.
