How do I save in the original format

I recorded a cover band and my camcorder split the video into several 2GB .MTS clips. The bigger point is that there is LOTS of dead time, breaks, etc. I'd like to know how to 1) edit an original 2GB MTS file, remove the dead spots and replace the original MTS file with the optimized result in MTS format. 2) I'd like to combine all of the optimized MTS files into one large MTS file. That file would stay on my hard drive for years and all project files (today and in the future) would reference this single, optimized file. I would delete the original files from my camcorder and laptop.
FYI: I simply copied the files via USB from my camcorder to my laptop. I'm not married to the MTS file format, that's just the format I got when I coped the files.

When you go to "Computer," you should then see the formats available, and choose MS AVI. That should bring up the Video, Audio and Multiplexing tabs. Under Video, you should have a Compression (depending on version, you might have to go to Advanced) drop-down, where you would choose Lagarith, or UT.
This is a look at the screen from PrE 4.0, which will be a bit different from your version, but will give you a general idea of the Advanced settings for the Share:
Hope that this helps, and does not confuse you (that potential is why I hesitated to post this - being from a previous version), and helps you locate the Compression/CODEC drop-down.

You are correct. It is not fair to blame Firefox for something the idiots at Facebook have done. I have not been impressed by all of the "new" features or changes they have made over the short 2 1/2 years I've been on Facebook. This was just the last straw. Too bad I was fooled into thinking that the latest change was fixable. With all the posts I've read expressing hatred of the new Timeline you would think they would have gotten the message. Perhaps they want folks to stop using it. Or perhaps they think that folks will scream for awhile then knuckle under. Just like the politicians, huh? I don't NEED Facebook. Thanks.

Do you have Microsoft Word installed on your Mac? If so, you can reassign all .doc files to Word by selecting the file in Finder and choosing "File > Get Info" from the menu. In the window that opens look for "Open with" and change the entry to "Microsoft Word".

Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

I must set the Formats in the CODEC to get the Format that I want to play with! I was trying to complicate too much!

This can happen if the HD icon is inadvertently dragged to the iPhoto Window.
Easiest solution: restore from your back up.
