How do I search network drives with Snow Leopard?

I cannot find a way to search available network drives using either Spotlight or the Find command.  This is a simple action in Windoze.  How do I do it in Snow Leopard (10.6.8)?

I finally found a partial answer at:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1568
The rest of the story is that you have to change the back slashes in the Windows address to forward slashes in a Mac browser address field to get to the folder.  NOTE that the Finder's Go command is useless for such connections.

  • How to install new reboot drive with Snow Leopard when new drive is unformatted and the only thing displayed is to choose to run the OS disc? It is impossible to choose disk utility as nothing happens.

Mac Pro (2006) running Snow Leopard crashed. Geniuses were certain it was bootable HD. Installed new HD and pressed option key with Snow Leopard in optical drive. Chose "Mac OS Installation Disc." Disc runs once for a minute, stops, runs again, then nothing. It is impossible to choose disk utility to format the disc as absolutely nothing but a black screen is visible!

pull all your drives so you just boot the DVD
If you have an ATI 5770 you cannot boot with less than 10.6.5
Ideally you would go through phone system and buy Lion, download and SAVE and create a Lion Installer media (DVD and flash memory are possible).
If you can't boot the DVD alone, let us know as gives a better idea.

  • How to make Canon printers work with Snow Leopard

Can anyone explain simple language (I'm not technical which is why I chose Apple) how I can get my Canon MP 980 printer/scanner to work with Snow Leopard.
Everything used to work perfectly and I'm beginning to regret the upgrade to Snow Leopard (what other suprises are waiting for me when I'm in a hurry?).
I have other Canon printers in various locations (MP 600, MP 530 and iP90). Will I have similar problems with all of them and, if so, is there a simple way to resolve the issues across the board?
I checked the Canon web-site but was totally confused
    Any help truly appreciated.

According to Apples website; they should work. Please see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#canon
The driver version should be: 10.26.1.0 (or greater)
The above article was modified in December 15th 2009
If after installing the most-up-to-date driver, via the link provided, the issue persists, reset the printing system.
    How-to reset the printing system:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/14001.html
Then install the printing driver supplied by Canon on Apples website here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/CanonPrinter_Drivers_for_Mac_OS_X_v106
If that still does not work, reset the printing system again. Now go to Canon's website and get the driver(s) for mac there.

There is the possibility the drivers on canon's website could be newer than apples. The version numbers, size of file to download, and release date all appear to be quite different.
On *apples website*, the driver info stats:

+I do not own the same printer+, however I would suggest installing some of or all of the following 3 drivers.
    If your printing via USB:
MP980 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.26.2.0 (Mac OS X 10.5/10.6)
If your printing via a Networked Printer:
MP980 series MP Driver Ver.1.0 for Network (Mac OS X 10.6)
If your going to use the scanner:
MP980 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.8.2 (Mac OS X 10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)
If you scroll down further, past the 'drivers', that same website from Canon also includes step-by-step guides/manuals for setting up the printer/scanner, both via USB & WiFi.
If the steps above did not resolve the issue, please respond back.
    Good Luck!

  • External Hard Drive with Snow Leopard/Windows 7

I just bought a 500GB external HD that I would like to be able to use with Snow Leopard AND Win 7. I won't be using it for any Time Machine backups. I just want to be able to read/write files on it with both Leopard and Win 7.
Is there any recommended format procedures in order to be able to do this. I may be wrong, but I don't think I can read/write to my external Time Machine external hard drive with my Windows lap top running Win 7.

a TM drive must be formatted mac os extended and windows can't even read that without extra software like Mac Drive. It also requires that the partition scheme be GUID which it's most likely not at the moment so repartition the drive with correct partition scheme now if you do decide to use it for TM in the future. also, snow bootcamp drivers once you install them in windows will let you red (but not write) to mac os extended formatted drives.
the only FS which is natively read+write from both OS X and windows is FAT. but it's very old and has many deficiencies especially on the OS X side.
    but it's good for interoperability.
or you can format the drive NTFS and use some software like NTFS-3g or NTFS for mac by paragon to make it writable from OS X.
you may also wish to split the drive in two partitions and format them differently.

  • Windows 7 (Client) map a network drive VPN Snow Leopard Server

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server and are using a VPN service.
My services on the mac os x sls server are: AFP, DNS, Firewall, Open Directory, SMB and VPN.
I can connect the VPN from Mac clients and Windows 7 clients, but I can only map a network drive/share point on Mac´s.
On Windows 7 I get an error: path or name not found ( I am sure using the correct path, same from Mac client that works).
When I am using my internal network LAN I can map a network drive using Windows 7 and Mac but outside over a VPN not (only Mac works).
The only service, at this moment,  that I need is File Sharing outside my network LAN using a VPN.
How can I map a network drive from a Windows 7 client using a VPN, is there any Firewall rules / SMB rules / File Sharing rules that I missed on the server side?
    Thank You.

I really don't know what are going wrong with my settings. As you said/write it must be an easy setup.
I'm using a Time Capsule and used the Server app to add VPN to the port forwarding also.
When I am connected thru the VPN I tried to ping the Server IP and got no answer from it, from W7 client!?
My Mac's are just working fine with AFP and SMB share points thru the VPN.
I think I have missed some settings from the SMB or Firewall services for VPN with W7 client's or it is a Windows issue.....

  • Network Printing with Snow leopard

Since installing Snow Leopard I have been unable to select my Officejet J6410 as a wireless network printer. I have followed the advice, selected Print & Fax in System Preferences, selected + and the printer comes up in Bonjour and after a few seconds it then adds HP-Fax and not, as in earlier versions, HPC012D7 Network Printer (HP IP). If I select the HP-Fax version I cannot wireless print. I know the wireless and printer are working because I have yet to install Snow Leopard on all of my computers. How to I get Snow Leopard to recognise and communicate with my printer?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Go to the Officejet site and do a search for drivers that are compatible with 10.6.

  • Loud rattling noise in drive with snow leopard upgrade disc

I attempted to upgrade my mac mini intel core duo (2.0 gHz with 3 GB) with the new snow leopard upgrade disc; it makes a horrendous nopise in the drive not unlike a leafblower, and an error message finally appears with CANNOT READ DISC. Every other media disc works fine in the drive; whether CD ROM or DVD. It works fine in my MacBook (Black from 2007). Any ideas on how to do this install? Apple checked the disc and they say it's fine.

  • Can I boot an internal hard drive with snow leopard?

Hi, I Have an Mid 07 macbook which i'm in the process of upgrading. I have a hard drive that i am up grading from 160gb to 500gb. my problem is i dont have a boot disc, because it's ethier been lost or didn't come with one. my question is can i just format the new hard drive with a copy of snow leopard?

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

Ive recently installed Snow Leopard on my mac, I also have windows 7 installed in a boot camp partition, I wnt to know if the support for the HFS+ file system in boot camp 3.0 supports windows 7 or ist only for vista and XP, because I cant see my Mac OS X drive when I boot from windows.
Do I need to change something from boot camp or Mac OS or is it supposed to work with any interaction from the user?

you need to install the new bootcamp drivers from windows. boot into windows, insert the snow leopard DVD, open it and follow the instructions.

  • Possible to Boot from External Drive with Snow Leopard??

I have a new iMac that came with Mountain Lion installed.  My previous Mac had Snow Leopard.  I kept that OS drive with all my applications.  I've already transferred 99.9% of my stuff from the old Mac to the new one and everything is working fine BUT....
There is one little thing from one of my apps that I need and to get it I need to launch that app from the previous install (on the old Mac).  Since I have that old system drive, is it possible connect it via USB and boot from it?  I've been trying but haven't had any luck
    Can anyone help out?

If the app in question was written strictly for the PowerPC you would need to boot from the Snow Leopard volume as you suggest. Generally speaking you can't run an OS X version that predated the one installed on your Mac when it was built, but there is no harm in trying to boot that OS X version installed on a separate partition.
You may be able to run the app with that HD mounted and available to your iMac as long as it is not strictly for the PowerPC.
I've been trying but haven't had any luck
What have you tried so far?

  • How to restore a Classic iPod with  Snow Leopard iMac?

We have replaced our PPC's with Intel's and moved on to Snow Leopard.
So how do we manage /restore our iPod Classic?

As long as everything that is on these iPod Classics have been moved to the new iTunes libraries on the Intel Macs, you can go ahead and restore them each to factory settings on the Intel Macs to associate them with the new libraries.

  • Can't boot from external hard drive with Snow Leopard

I bought a new Macbook Air with Lion. I have my old Snow Leopard installation cloned onto an external hard drive, and I want to boot from it. I can choose my external hard drive during boot, it shows the Apple logo, but after that the screen goes black and nothing happens. Is there a way to fix this?

Can't be done.  Snow Leopard does not contain necessary drivers and perhaps other items required for OS X on the 2011 MBA.  In fact, the version of Lion on the App store won't install on the 2011 MBA.
This is totally normal in Apple's world.  A new version of MAC hardware that comes with a new version of OS X installed usually will not operate correctly with previous versions of OS X.

  • Mac Pro can't find hard drive with Snow Leopard installed on

    Hello there,
I have a three harddrive setup.
Harddrive 1 is in bay 1 and has two partitions.
    1: For system and apps
    2: For Documents and stuff
Hard drive 2+3 are in Bay 2+3 and are combined to a RAID 0 drive.
Some time ago I installed Leopard and the brand new an formatted hard drive.
It happened that it always took 2 start ups to run Leopard because always on the first time it didn t find the system on hard drive one. Pushing the 'D' button often helped.
Of course that was nothing to work with, although I at least could get some work done, once I loaded Leopard successfully.
So I tried Disk Utility, fsck without success.
I also tried the way of using fdisk to mark the partion as active, which only resulted in now not being able to boot at all.
Booting from DVD I also tried choosing my Leopard install on my hard drive as boot device (it has always shown up here) but still without success.
I am afraid things are quite messed up, since there were a few things happening at one time, which I am not overly happy about now. (Installing new RAM, installing SNOW LEOPARD on the new harddrive 1 in bay one, having still the RAID with LEOPARD on in bays 2+3).
I am already certain to do a fresh and complete reinstall of the system, I have my backup, but still there is some iTunes music and a few documents I haven't backed up yet, which I'd rather would not like to lose...
    Put it short:
What could I do to get my system running at least once?
    Thanks a lot,
    max.

After some research I found out about the nice TargetDiskMode which I used to save all my important data with my MacBook.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Ready to perform a complete and fresh install now!
    Max.
