How do I search on spotlight files and folders on the server?

We have 6 macs and one Mac Server, running Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mountain Lion Server, and I need to know how to search the server from each of the terminals, and how to move some of the server files into my favorites in Finder. How do I do that?

The previews for "MasterCatalog" are correct, and are a combination of all of the individual previews that existed previously.
The only thing you can do with the previews from other catalogs is delete them via your operating system, which shouldn't be a problem.

Moving files and folders in the Library module

I teach a lot of LR users and one area that's consistantly frustrating and unintuitive (even to some experienced users) are the rules for moving files and folders around in the Library module. I'm not sure I have all the right answers/suggestions/remedies but here are the basic points worth examining:
1) Additional hard drives aren't listed unless images from it have been imported into Lightroom. It would be nice if people could add a new hard drive without importing files from it. People don't get it that you can select "Add Folder" from the Folders pop up menu. Classic example: Say someone has purchased a new hard drive for archiving purposes. It's empty and they want to drag folders of images onto it from within LR. Possible Solution: include a "Add Drive..." option from the Folder's panel + pop-up menu that would behave the same and add a root level folder.
2) One can't drag more than one folder at a time. While I assume this is designed to prevent accidental mass movement it would be nice if one could enable the movement of multiple folders.
3) One can't drag a folder onto the main drive bar that lists the drive's name and capacities - one has to drag onto a folder within a drive. I'd love to be able to drag a folder onto the root level of a drive by dropping onto the drive bar (this would be similar to the MacOS finder).
4) Sometimes the root level of a drive isn't apparent. One may need to right click on a folder and select "Show Parent Folder" to show the root level folder which is named after the volume. Showing a root "folder" that has the same name as the drive is also confusing to people since there isn't actually a folder on the hard drive with that name. I completely understand why folders are hidden by default and I'm not sure the remedy is but, again, this isn't intuitive for new users. If #3 worked as described perhaps we could have root level access without the root folder?

Perhaps I should add that I really like and appreciate a lot of the decisions that have already been implemented into the Library's Folder's tab. Moving files instead of copying them, showing only folders that contain imported images, the ability to show or hide parent folders.... Bravo!

How to use the same channel to send a file and messages to the server

I'm trying to develop a simple program that will send and receive files from the server and in the same time I need to communicate with the server through the messages
I'm using TCP Socket
my problem is
I have only one channel
so, I have no option, either I can use it for sending the file itself or sending the message .. but not both !
my question is : How can I use the same channel for sending and receiving (file & message)

How do I write an excel file and check what the next empty column would be to put the data in?

I have somehow managed to write the portion of labview that prompts the user for a name. It checks a file to see if they are a new user or not and then assigns a number if they are. The program then acquires data that is to be put into a spreadsheet. Each subject will have ten trials which will have three columns. How do I get the information into the columns and then check each time to see which column it should go into (i.e. the next empty column for that subject). I have attached what I have thus far. I wrote this a long time ago and haven't touched it for some time so everything is a blur.

To perform those operations in excel you will use ActiveX. I will attach some examples of using Excel in LabVIEW and you can use these to do exactly what you want.
These three examples show how to manipulate properties, write to excel and read from excel. Let me know if there is more I can do.

How to compile swf from fla files and folders?

Hey,
I have decompiled a swf file and got a fla file and also all kind of folders including action scripts.
How do I run this? I mean if I make some changes how do I convert it back to a swf file?
I created a swf file from one fla file but I got a file that was like 20x less in size then the original. I think it was not using the files in the folders.

How do i read a text file and then display the content as a string

I also would like to strip the string from a certain substring and convert the remaining string into an array of floating point numbers. I was thinking of using the read from spreadsheet vi but I'm not exactly sure if that is going to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is what I have so far. What I am trying to do is to display the text file as a string and then strip the "curve" from the text file. I think I did this successfully. Now I want to convert the remaining string into an array of floating point numbers, and display the numbers into an array and on a waveform graph.

How do I compare two csv files and not disable the user if the username is found in the 2nd file using powershell?

I have two csv files with the following headers and I need to import both files into the script to check whether the StaffCode is present in the Creation/Renewal of Contract csv in a DisableAccount Script so I can stop any action to disable the account as
the staff has renewed the contract with the company so the account should not be disabled.
However my accounts are still being disabled. I am not sure now to construct the query so that it detects that the account is to be left alone if the staffcode is present in both files
I does recognize that the $staffcodeN in the renewal file matches the $staffcode in the termination file
but still proceeds to disable or set an expiry date to the account anyway based on the termination file.
How do I stop it from doing that?
1)In the Creation/Renewal of contract file the following headers are present
- TranCode,StaffCode,LastName,FirstName,SocialSecurityNo,DateJoin,Grade,Dept,LastUpdateDate,EffectiveDate
2)In the Disable of contract file the following headers are present
- TranCode,StaffCode,LastName,FirstName,SocialSecurityno,LastDateWorked,Grade,Dept,LastUpdateDate,
My data is not very clean , I have a-lot of special characters such as = , ' ,/ and \ characters to remove first before i can compare the data

Your script is missing some parts, it is impossible to follow the problem.
You are performing the same string cleaning action on $opencsv2 for each element in $opencsv, when doing it once should suffice. Why not start it all by cleaning the values and storing the cleaned values in new arrays?
The Compare-Object function is great, why not take it out for a stroll on these lists, it might just safe you lots of unnecessarily complicated code ...
You are creating a new $Domain, $Root and $Searcher object each iteration, when doing it once should suffice. Probably not much of a time-saver, but every little thing contributes.
Try pinpointing the problem by doing extensive logging, not only by writing which action was taken, but writing the inidividual information (variables, mostly) before evaluation occurs. Your if/elseif/else looks sound, so if it's still not doing what you
want, the ingoing data must be different from what you think should be there.

Ok, I've backed up my iMovie that I am currently working on. However, when I transfer the data to my computer from an external drive it loads all the clips, but none of them are in the timeline. How do I put the timeline back in place? I've done this before.

How to set default permissions for files and folders

We have mac and windows computers on a network where we use Mac OSX Server 10.4 to share files. When files are created on windows computer, no problem, all users can read/write these files. However on our 2 macs (1 10.3 and 1 10.4), other users are blocked from using the files, only the owner has "read/write", group and others are "read only". As far as I can tell, file sharing is turned on ok in Workgroup Manager for the folders we share files from. How can we establish sharing for all users on our network?

Moving or Copying Files and Folders on the Desktop.

Hi All, I have come across this before and cannot recall how I got around it. I have copied some folders from an external FW drive onto the desktop of my iMac. I create a new folder on the desktop to move these folders into. Without holding down the option key or any key, the Finder copies them instead of what it should be doing by moving them. It is a pain!!! What is making the Finder copy rather than just move these folders even though they are on the same volume? The owner of the folders and the logged in user on the iMac is the same. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Let me clarify.....
I have copied a folder from my External Firewire drive to my desktop.
I have created a new folder on my desktop.
When I attempt to move the copied folder which is already on the desktop to the new folder which is also on the desktop, a + sign appears on my cursor. I don't want to copy it to the new folder, I just want to move it into it. This is all happening on the same volume and happens only with the folder. Any files inside this folder can be moved as per normal.

You can 'compress' files and folders from the Finder by selecting the items and choosing File>Compress "selected file or folder". This will create a zip archive and will save you some space. (I just tried it on a 16GB folder and it compressed it to an 11GB zip file). After you zip the file/folder the original can be deleted )until you need to access it again, then you can just double-click the zip file).
If you're trying to free up disk space on your hard drive, this is not the best method... but you didn't ask about that...
