How do I search within a smart folder?

In OSX Snow Leopard, I was able to perform a search within a Smart Folder. Now when I try to do the same in OSX Lion, I get strange results that aren't accurate at all. I'm seeing files in the search results that aren't even part of the Smart Folder. It doesn't seem to be working. Is this another known bug in Lion?

Let me walk you through the problem. If I navigate to a particular folder nd click in search it does not show the folder name:
However if I start typing I get the option to search said folder. Than I just blank out what I typed so I can get everything in the folder and all of it's subfolders. Strangely, "Kind: Any" does not work. I had to set it to documents.

  • Why can't I delete photos from within a smart folder?

I setup smart folders to help me weed out certain types of bad photos. The problem is, now that I have collected these photos I am unable to "move to trash" from within a smart folder. Why do you suppose Apple did this? Every time I find a photo I need to delete, that is inside one of these smart folders, I have to return to the Photos library and try and track it down in there......then move it to trash.
    Any ideas?

Perhaps you are hitting the wrong key combination?
Command key is the Apple key. So you should be holding down the Apple key & the option key and while holding hit delete.
Perhaps you are holding down Ctrl instead?
Also, which keyboard do you have? I wonder if there is an issue with the laptop and new iMac shorty keyboards where delete and backspace are treated differently. The new keyboards do a "forward delete" by holding down the Fn key along with delete. Maybe something there is causing an issue?

  • How to view and or delete smart folder in finder sidebar

Sounds easy, but I am having a problem. I recently had my hard drive replaced at the genius bar. I have a smart File on the finder side bar that I can not open or delete. When I click on the file I get the message "the volume for (name of file) cannot be found. I tried using both "spotlight" & "the finder go to" locate this smart folder to no avail. I cannot remember when I created this file but I had labeled it appleworks 6 manual.. I don't ever remember using this smart file, I may have just created it without ever putting anything in it. So how do I open it or just plain delete it. I can remove it from the side board but it just comes back. I also went to /volumes which took me to the hard drive, but when I looked at all the files I couldn't find a smart file with this label. Any suggestion? Thanks Paula

I made another smart folder. I wanted to see if I could get the options with the control key. My test folder worked fine and I was able to get the options. I could delete the test folder without any problems. If it is that I have an Appleworks manual stored in an image file, then how could I find the image file? And if I did find it, what would I do to it, so I could delete this smart folder that I set up? I did a spotlight search for image file, but I couldn't find anything. I also searched appleworks manual and I did find a "getting started with appleworks 6 document" with an path of '/application/appleworks (U.S. English) Applework 6 documentation ... when I click on it it opens in preview.. but that manual is stored in my appleworks in applications, so I don't think it is related to the smart folder in the finder sidebar. If I did manage to close or delete the image file that was related to this folder, does that mean I'm just stick with this smart folder that I can't delete on my finder sidebar?

  • How do I finish this Create Smart Folder script?

I've gotten most of the way on a homemade file tagging system. My Automator Service gets files, asks what to tag them, applies the tags to the Spotlight Comments, and then asks if you want to make a Smart Folder that finds one of your new tags.
If you do, it runs a script. The script asks what tags you would like to populate the Smart Folder, initiates a new smart folder based by appending the tags to "comment:" in the Spotlight search. But that's where I'm stuck. I can't figure out how to automate clicking the darn "Save" button to create the Smart Folder.
And feel free to co-opt my tagging strategy, it is working famously for a team of 5 in shared Dropbox folders.
Here's my Applescript. See the solitary comment in my code below for where I think I need help.
    ====================
display dialog "Which tags should be queried to populate the Tag Folder?" default answer "separate tags by spaces" buttons {"Cancel", "Continue"} default button 2

  • How do I search for a bookmark folder by name in Safari?

How do I search for a particular bookmark folder in Mac Safari 7.06?  Since there seems to be no automated way to sort the folders (as in other browsers), in a long list of folders, a particular one can be hard to spot.  Yes yes, very similar to a previous question of mine.  -jan

Click "Help" menu in the Safari menu bar and enter the folder name in the search box.

How do you sort pics in a smart folder in the Photos App? Date, Name, etc.

Yes, when I do that it sorts the albums in the folder by name.
I may have misused terminology, I meant Smart Albums not smart folders, if this makes a difference.
    Thanks for your help!

  • How do I search for just a folder with Spotlight

How do I search for a folder with Spotlight, not a file?  Spotlight is a great tool for finding a file, but often I just want to locat a folder.
When I find a file, how to I see the path to this file?
These are probably obvious question for longtime Mac users, but I come from the Windows world.

Activate the Finder's window. Put the folder name in the search field in the Finder's toolbar. Enter COMMAND-F which should change the Finder's window and give a toolbar above the column headers:
If you click on the dropdown menu with "Any" you will see this:
    Select the "Folder" entry.

If I tap on the URL field then yes, you are taken to a screen with your favorites, but if then start typing in the URL field you should get something like :
Tap on a result below the 'on this page' to go back to your webpage and that occurence should be highlighted

  • How to search within a specific folder

I know this sounds elementary. However, it doesn't seem to work for me. Let me explain:
I have opened a finder window and clicked on a specific folder. In that folder are over a hundred files. In the same finder window, I enter the exact file name of an file in that same folder (let's assume we know its in that folder). Let's pretend the folder I'm searching is called "PhotosA"
After I type in the file name, the search begins. However, in the window, it tells me it's searching "This Mac" and the folder which I have selected--PhotosA--is not selected. So then I click on the PhotosA folder and it shows up as found.
My question is: Why do I need to do an extra step to click on PhotosA, when I have already told the computer I want to search in PhotosA? Why does the search always go to "This Mac"? This is not a major problem. It's just a minor annoyance.
Is there a way for me to set my Mac to search the folder or drive I have selected, as opposed to it always going to "This Mac"?

    Use Easyfind.

It's better than Apple's find in about a thousand different ways.

  • Boolean Search Criteria in Smart Folder

I noticed that the smart folders that come with OS X 10.5 include "Today" "Yesterday" and so on. Examining the search criteria I saw that there is a boolean line "Any/None/All of the following are true". I cannot find how to add this line to my searches. Does anyone know how to do this?

    Opt-click on the Add criteria ( + ) button.

  • How can I search for a specific folder when filing an email message?

Dear all, first of all thanks for your support.
Please don’t hit me but I am currently a BlackBerry user, since this is the standard I got from the company I work for.
That said, new server technologies allows now to use also other devices with the same company server, something that gives me the chance to switch to an iPhone.
Basically it’s all ready for the switch, but just one thing holds me from making the step.
It’s the email messages filing procedure.
With the iPhone, assuming I am not missing something (something that I hope), when you want to file an email in one of your folders you select the “file” function and then you scroll with your finger across the folders list you have in your email account.
This is all right if you have an handful of folders, but if you have hundreds, if not thousands, of folders it will take forever to find the one you’re looking for.
With a BlackBerry, once you selected the email messages you’d like to file, and after you selected the “file” function, you can also scroll, but – very important for me – I can also start typing the initial letters of the folder I’m looking for. The more I type the less folders will appear, as less folders will match with letters I typed. Once the list is short enough to easily see the folder you want (usually after you typed two or three letters, which takes no more than a second), you can pick the folder you wanted in a blink of an eye.
This makes email messages filing a very fast operation, and since I use this for my job I can’t live without email filing.
If someone of you knows how to perform the same with an iPhone, and possibly with the original apple mail software, I will very glad to make the switch.
Thanks to all that will offer their support.
    Regards.

  • How do you search Smart Folder?

I created a Smart Folder for my PDFs but can't search it with Spotlight. When I enter a search string my PDF Folder does a new search instead of filtering my PDFs. Is there a way to search the contents of a Smart Folder or are Smart Folders dumb?

Take a look at the information I put together about the new version of Spotlight:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html
Scroll to about the middle of the page for detailed instructions, with a picture even, on doing further searches in a Smart Folder to refine the results.

  • How do I search the folder tree by parts of a folder name. Is there a folder library similar to the bookmark library to aid folder organization?

How can I search by email account folder names and bookmark folder names by keywords or parts of folder name? Is there a way to enter and associate keywords to email/bookmark folder names?
We file all our email transactions and bookmarks in an inverted tree structure under the appropriate ISP account and user name but often end up with duplicate taxonomical entries under multiple ISP accounts such as one for Roadrunner or Google-mail address for the same Windows user account and name. I sometimes create an identical folder in both accounts. Being able to search by foldername across email accounts in the same Windows username would be wonderful to correct bifurcations in folder name taxonomy.
What am I not doing right - Please?
    Thank you kindly - Chris

    Dear Zenos,
Thank you ever so much. That was exactly what I'd wished for and need. I have installed it on all five of my computers.
I have been working on electronics and computers component level and programming since I was a Ham radio operator at age 14. This is one of the few times I've ever asked for an answer to a question and had it so fully satisfied by someone else rather than having to muddle my way through to a solution on my own.
Now that might not seem to be much praise (if you figure I might be 15) but I was 14 in 1963 and I held the position of senior corporate technical support engineer for Data General Corp. (old mini-computer manufacturer) I've been working on computers since bits were wooden!
Anyway ... THANKS .. I really mean it!

  • How to search in a specific folder?

I have a late 2012 iMac with Yosemite. How can you search in a specific folder? If I am in my movies folder, how can I just narrow my search to that folder only. Not sure why I have to ask this and why it isn't easy enough to figure out. Please do not tell me I don't have to download an external app to do such a basic function.

EasyFind can search a certain Folder if it's open in the Finder or has been...
I use  Find Any File to find things Spotlight won't let you see.
