How do I securely wipe all data on an iMac before it iOS given away?

As part of an estate, I need to securely wipe an iMac before it is given to the heirs.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
  3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) To securely erase the drive,
click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
  4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How Do You Securely Wipe All Info Off Internal Hard Drive?

A friend has to ship her new iMac back to Apple for a replacement -- long story.
But before she ships it off she wants to wipe the internal hard drive of all her personal info -- mail, photos, music, documents, ...
What's the best way to securely wipe that internal drive?

you can do it using the erase tab in disk utility. there is an option to erase securely. it writes zeros over everything on the drive. do just one zero erase pass. disk utility lets you choose multiple erase passes but that's a vast overkill.
to do it to an internal drive boot from the snow leopard dvd and use disk utility there to erase the drive. when done restart and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager. eject the isntall dvd there and shut down.

  • How do i securely wipe the disk on an iMac?

I replaced an old iMac and want to donate it to charity. But I need to securely wipe the disk first. Can someone please provide instructions. Thanks?

If your machine came with DVDs then you can do a reformat using Disk Utility on the install DVD that came with the machine, click Erase - Security and choose the number of passes, the more secure you go the longer it takes. If you have a large (1TB or more) and set it to the highest security the erase process could take days and no I am not kidding. In most case set it to a very moderate setting is just fine.
If your machine came with Lion or later where no DVDs were shipped, boot into the Recovery Partition and launch DU from there.

Contact Apple (call AppleCare) and for a nominal fee the discs will be replaced.  You can do that or purchase Snow Leopard (still availble from Apple for $20) and do an erase and install of OS X making the machine like a new machine.

You can call AppleCare and request a replacement set of the original DVD's that shipped with the computer for a nominal charge. You will need the serial number (look on the bottom of the stand) and a credit card. Click the AppleCare Contact Info link. Without knowing which iMac you have it's very difficult to say if a new SL disc would work or not.

  • I want to transfer all data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro. How do I do that?

My iMac's video card has died and I am told it is too old to replace.  They recommended transferring all my data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro.  They said attach a fire wire, and press "t' before the iMac starts up and then it will start in safe mode (or something like that).  But I don't know what to do next.  Can anyone help me?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you start up your iMac holding the T key, it will start up in Target Disk mode. In this mode, the iMac's hard disk appears as an external drive in your MacBook Pro, so you can access there and recover your data.
After starting in Target Disk mode, open a Finder window in the MacBook Pro and you will see the iMac's hard drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Select it, navigate through your folders and copy them to your MacBook Pro's hard drive.

  • How can I iterate over all data in database?

    Hello,
I need to copy all data from one database to another. Unfortunately I can't.
    1. When I use Cursor: database.openCursor, cursor.getFirst, cursor.getNext, cursor.getNext,.... after some period of time getNext returns me data which was loaded already and this operation never ends.
    2. When I use Cursor: database.openCursor, cursor.getLast, cursor.getPrev, cursor.getPrev,.... here is no infinite loop as in first case, but not all data was retrieved from database.
    3. When I use db dumb: same situation as in first case, operation never ends.
    Any other solution are available?
p.s. database size is 18Gb, and we are using Berkeley DB 4.5.2 version.
    Best regards,
    Alexander

    Hello Alex.
    1. db_verify does not give anything. Just hangs up without any result.
    2. My steps to identify that the cursor is in a loop:
    - create HashSet for ids
    - open cursor and iterate database using cursor.getNext or cursor.getPrev, as a result I have key and value
    - check new key - contains in HashSet of ids or not
    Example of results:
    e.g.: I have ids in database: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
    Possible variants of result
    1. Everything is OK
    - Iterating database using cursor.getFirst, cursor.getNext returns me keys: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
    - Iterating database using cursor.getLast, cursor.getPrev returns me keys: 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1
    2. Fail - 1
    - Iterating database using cursor.getFirst, cursor.getNext returns me keys: 1,2,3,4,5
    - Iterating database using cursor.getLast, cursor.getPrev returns me keys: 9,8,7
    3. Fail - 2
    - Iterating database using cursor.getFirst, cursor.getNext returns me keys: 1,2,3,4,5,5,5,5,5
    - Iterating database using cursor.getLast, cursor.getPrev returns me keys: 9,8,7
Situation with results Nr2 and Nr3 appears after few months working on production.
We are using BTREE database type.
    Database configuration:
    - page-size=16384
    - cache-size=1073741824
    - max-locks=20000
    - max-lockers=10000
    - max-lock-objects=5000
    - log-size=20971520
    - checkpoint-frequency=60
    - max-transactions=1000
    - database dir - memory disk
    - database logs dir - VTRAK
    - 1 master (Read/Write), 1 slave (for backup only)
    Database size
    - ~9.5GB
    - ~8M keys
    - ~1.2Kb average entry size
    Database load
    - ~4000 load operations/sec peak time, up to 160M loads per day
    - ~1400 update operations/sec peak time, up to 55M updates per day
P.S. Newer version of Berkeley DB.
Currently we are testing on our production servers a new version of Berkeley DB 5.0.21. Same configuration, same load, same database size, same database type.
Result: works fine with one exception, but this exception does not allow us to migrate to the newest version.
    Problem symptoms:
    1. database started, everything is ok. average time of load operation 20K nanoseconds, save operation 75K nanoseconds
    2. works smoothly about 20 minutes
    3. suddenly all methods to DB read/write hangs up. As the result average time of read operation 110 milliseconds and max time 30 seconds, average time of save operation 50 milliseconds and max time 30 seconds
    4. After some period of time (up to one minute) response time as it was in point 1
    5. works smoothly for 5-10 minutes
    6. see point 3
With no replication work without problems.
Here it is vmstat statistics where we can see the number of Processes increased that time when response time is higher.

I have logged all Berkeley DB internal statistics during the test: DatabaseStats, CacheStats, LockStats, LogStats, ReplicationStats, MutexStats, but there are plenty parameters. I do not know which parameters are interesting for me.

  • Best procedure to delete all data in my iMac etc

Selling or trading in an iMac which is best procedure to completely erase all data ?
Also procedure to transfer data from external disk with saved data from entire system using TM ?
Thanks so much Happy New Year

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps listed in this support article, take these steps:
    1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")
