How do i see what is filling up my hard drive

My 5 month old macbook pro wit 500GB HD is 75% full. I use the computer for school and mainly word processing and some music. The "other" category in the HD is 377GB, about 40-50 is music, photos, word files, programs etc. How do I find out what is taking up all this space? I have not dowloaded anything this large ever.

I have a small (20g) drive that is supposed to be just for system and applications, but somehow it is filling up -- all my media and data files are elsewhere.... other than searching through every folder, is there a way to identify what is taking up so much room? When you consider 1 hour of DV video takes up 12 GB, I think you are dreaming if you can do work with Final Cut Pro on a 20 GB hard drive, unless all the work you do is on already compressed MPEG-2 video.
Don't sell yourself cheap. 500 GB drives are only $160 for desktop Macs.
Anyway, please start a new topic thread so someone can help you unclemax, if you have no advice to help the original poster. It sounds like you need someone to help you understand what is needed for your projects

What is filling up my hard drive?

I only have about 4 GB of free space on my 40 GB hard drive and because of this the laptop is starting to slow down a bit.
I have gone through my folders and I am not completely sure what is occupying all the space as I only have about 13 GB of music and a couple of GB's of photos and film. Also, I have uninstalled any programs that I dont use regularly and with the exception of ilife, don't really have that many big applications installed.
Can anyone suggest what may be taking up all the space and maybe suggest an application that gives you a full breakdown of what is on your hard drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What Size is somewhat like OmniDisk Sweeper which Ronda already linked, but it does one job of listing the contents of your HDD and sorting them by size. Download and run this and examine the output and see if your recognize anything that shouldn't be there.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk has a number of good suggestions, including some which Ronda already mentioned.
Next to last, if you use your computer to store music files (iTunes) and photos, they take up a lot of space. You really should consider installing a larger HDD in your computer. Even the space you free up now will fill up again, and quickly. You should have about 10% to 20% of your total capacity as free space for your computer to run efficiently. A too full disk not only compromises performance but can lead to more serious problems like directory problems (overlapping extent allocation files etc.), data loss, and a crashing HDD.
Finally, be sure you have a good backup of everything you cannot afford to lose. Cloning your entire internal HDD to an external Firewire HDD using a utility like http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html (Carbon Copy Cloner) or http://shirtpocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html (SuperDuper) is always a good policy, but especially important in your case.

How can I determine what is taking up my hard drive space?

I have a 55GB hard drive with 6.83GB of free space remaining. I find it hard to believe that I have 50GB of space used. How do I find out what is taking up the 50GB of disc space? I manually run the sudo daily, weekly, monthly jobs so I don't believe it's log files, etc. Thanks in advance.

How can I see what's using all my hard disk space

The other day I noticed my HD has 3GB left of memory, but my Home folder is only using 67GB. How can I figure out what is hogging all my space and get rid of it? I do use Bittorrent but I highly doubt that would account for the loss of free space.

Start with the freeware Grandperspective. The interface is a bit unusual, but it should help you figure out what's taking up all your space.
And of course make sure you're emptying the Trash.

How can I see what I'm actually video recording on iPad Air so that I don't include extra stuff at the borders of the image? It seems to automatically "zoom in" on the screen, but when I export the video, the picture isn't framed well.

When I try to record a video on the Ipad Air, the screen automatically "zooms in" closer than when I'm taking a photo. So I frame the interview and record it. But when I export it to post it or edit it, I discover that only the screen was zoomed in, the camera wasn't, so I have all this extra stuff around the edges of my frame.
I don't need to zoom in, but I do need to be able to see what I'm shooting--otherwise, as I'm videotaping, I'm guessing at my picture's framing. But every time I switch from photo to video mode, the screen "zooms in." How can I see what I'm actually recording?

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

You can see what's in iCloud collectively at settings > iCloud > storage & back up > manage.... You can only edit the data through the appropriate app (contacts, calendars etc)
For problems with 3rd party apps, contact the developer.

You have to sign into your iCloud account at icloud.com from a computer to view your iCloud data. Also, be careful not to delete data from your phone that is being synced to iCloud or it will delete if from iCloud too. (For example, if you delete a contact from your phone with Settings>iCloud>Contacts set to On it will remove the contact from iCloud too.)

Simplest way is to open the drive in Windows Explorer, then in the root you should find a folder WD Smartware.stor. Within that should be a folder for each device you've backed up, and within that a folder for each drive on that device that you've backed up. Within those drive folders you should find the files/folders that have been backed up from that particular drive. You can look through them in the same way that you look through the files/folders on your actual drive itself, and confirm that everything is there that you expect to be.
