How do I select photos in iphoto?

I want to select specific pictures to import to iphoto from my sd card. However my only option is only pressing shift to select multiple pictures but there are ones that I dont want to import.

Try holding the Command (Cmd) key while selecting multiple photos.

I can only select "most recent" but would like to create a ipod pics folder and load only select photos to it. How can I do this? It was easy in windows.

Make an album of the pics in iPhoto. Then use iTunes to sync that album with the iPod.

Here's something you can try with a copy of your current library.
1 - go to iPhoto's Events preference pane and set the auto split option to 1 day per even.
2 - go the the Events mode, select all Events.
3 - go to the Events menu and and select Autosplit Selected Events.
which will give you an event for each day.
4 - again select all events (although it might be better do to fewer at a time) and export them to your desired destination via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with the following settings:
The workflow above will produce a folder for each days photos with the date as the folder's title.

In Contacts when I try to edit and select a persons photo all I can select from is buttons labelled Defaults, Recents, and Camera. After posting my question found links to others who have reported the same issue. The fix for me was to do the following:
Closed out of both Contacts and iPhoto (may not have been necessary but I did)
Clicked on Finder application
Clicked on the GO button at the top of the screen
Held down the "alt-option" key so that the LIBRARY selection would appear. Clicked on LIBRARY.
Clicked on the FILE button at the top of the screen and selected NEW FOLDER.
Named the folder Images
Launched the Contacts application. Edited a contact and when I go to edit the photo I now have the FACES button.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

For a single photo you need to know the file name? If so you can extract photos one at a time out of the TM backups for import into iPhoto. You would do it as follows:
1 - download and launch Find Any File.
2 - select the Time Machine external hard drive.
3 - enter the file name and search. It will take longer than a normal search due to the nature of the Time Machine structure, maybe up to 1 miinute.
4 - select the file that is in the Masters or Originals folder in the search results window and drag to the Desktop where it can be imported into iPhoto:
