How do I select specific songs to be in a playlist?

Have iPod nano 6th, 8 g (I think).  How do I select particular songs to drag to ipod? I tried unchecking some, but that didn't work.  Should I work oly from the "Music" library?  Can I also keep some songs already on the ipod while eliminating and adding others?  Thanks!

Hi luckybobbi,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The article below will explain how to manually manage the music on your iPod nano.  You should be working within your iTunes library and dragging the songs you want from the library to your device.
This in formation is on page 18 of the iPod User Guide:
manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1551/en_US/iPod_nano_6thgen_User_Guide.pd f
Managing iPod nano manually
If you manage iPod nano manually, you can add and remove individual songs and other content.
Set iTunes to manage content manually:
1) In iTunes Preferences, click Devices, and then select “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.”
2) In iTunes, select iPod nano in the device list and click the Summary tab.
3) In the Options section, select “Manually manage music.”
4)Click Apply.
When you manually manage content on iPod nano, you must always eject iPod nano from iTunes before you disconnect it. See “Eject iPod nano:” on page 13.
Add a song:
1 In iTunes, click Music or another item below Library on the left side of the iTunes window.
2 Drag a song or other item to iPod nano in the device list.
Remove a song from iPod nano:
1 In iTunes, select iPod nano in the device list.
2 Select a song or other item on iPod nano, then press the Delete or Backspace key on your keyboard.
If you remove a song or other item from iPod nano, it isn’t deleted from your iTunes library.
Cheers,
- Judy

  • How Do I select Multiple songs to Use with Slideshow?

    Thanks

The slide show feature in Lightroom isn't really very flexible or feature packed.  I suspect the design was to provide professional photographers a quick way to show proofs to clients.  You will have to use other software for what you intend to accomplish.  I'm going to be creating a slide show with about 500 images soon.  My intention is to create the slide show with Lightroom and export as video.  Then I will use Premiere Elements and import the video and lay down the music track.  There are easier ways to do it, I know.  But I don't do this kind of thing very often and don't plan to purchase more software that would make it easier.

You might want a more Mac-centric version of that post which is directed more at Windows users.
iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • How do I load specific songs onto Nano?

I have iTunes with over 1,000 songs on it and I just got a Nano that stores only 500 songs. How do I select which songs I want to go on the Nano? I don't want to connect it for the first time and have it just put the first 500 songs it reads on there. How do I do in manually?

In addition to Kylene's excellent advice, you might also start learning how to use smart playlists. One of the very useful functions of smart playlist for Nano users is that one of the rules you can set is to fill the smart playlist up to a certain storage level, say 1GB or whatever. Then you can set the iPod to automatically update only certain playlist and pick that one.
You can then set other rules and click live updating to have that playlist change over time. For example, only songs that have been played 1 or 0 times (so stuff you haven't played at all yet or only heard once). As you play the songs and they go above 1 play count, they fall out of the playlist and are replaced.
Or another is to have the playlist be 1GB (or whatever) of the least recently played songs, so your playlist is auto filled and updated with the stuff you haven't heard in the longest times. Again, as they get played they become the most recently played and fall out of the list to be replaced by others (if you use the live updating button in the playlist).
    Have fun,
    Patrick

i have imatch but have more than 25000 songs. how do i select witch songs i want on imatch ??

    Neil,
Before using Match, you will have to reduce your iTunes library below 25.000.
Be aware that songs purchased from the iTunes Store on the same account are unlimited as far as Match is concerned, and are not counted in the 25,000 limit.

  • Selecting or de-selecting multiple songs in check boxes in playlist

What's the trick for selecting or de-selecting multiple songs via check boxes in playlists, etc.?
Figured this would be an easy one to figure out on my own, but here i am a few years later...
    Be easy on me, now.

just select all the songs you want to check-uncheck and then control click (or right click) and select check-uncheck selection.
    hope this helps.

  • How do I select multiple songs and uncheck them from compilations (itunes 10.5.2)

So I found to my annoinance that itunes has recently moved much of my music to compilations that shouldn't be there. I tried searching online for how to turn compilations off or select multiple songs and uncheck them from compilations all at once and although I found both answers, they must have only worked for older versions of itunes. I no longer can find the option to turn off compilations under preferences and when I try to select multiple songs at a time then press "Get Info" the "part of a compilation" checkmark is not there. It is only there when one song is highlighted. This is very frustrated. In fact I would venture to say I've never been so angry with Apple. There are 609 songs "stuck" in my freaking compilations! I don't have time nor should I have to take the time to go through every single song right clicking it, pressing "Get info", unchecking "part of compilation" then clicking ok. WAY TOO MUCH TIME! If anyone has any good news on a faster way to do this I'd be VERY THANKFUL!

This was a life saver! I even started to manually tick the box as well!

  • How to find a specific song?

I am looking for the song "To Sir With Love" by Lulu with the group The Mindbenders. My problem is that apparently there are two versions? And when I listen to the samples I can't tell if it's has the lyrics I'm looking for. I want the version which is sung in the movie which includes the line Those awkward years... Does anyone know how to find a specific version of a song? Thank you in advance for your help.

Search the iTunes Store for "to sir, with love"
One of the songs will contain in the title (from the Columbia movie.....
No guarantee but I would guess that's the one you are looking for.

  • When sync pics PC to iPad with iTunes, how do I select specific pics within each subdirectory?

My pics are on a external hard drive and organized into directories such as sports, birthdays, etc.  I would want to select only some of the pics in each directory to sync with the iPad.  I can select the directories to be synced but not specific pics. How can I select the pics without creating yet another directory for purpose of the sync.

then you may want to look into other photo apps than the built in one. the build in one is set to sync with one folder, not with multiple files from multiple folders. It simply can't do what you'd like it to do I'm afraid.
Someone may be able to recommend a different photo app for you to try.

  • How do I select a song to play manually?

This is probably a stupid question because after browsing all discussion entries I can't find anything like the problem I am having: when we open iTunes and select a song to play, we cannot manually change to another song, when we try to double-click or press space on a different song it goes back to the one it was playing. It plays in order. If I want to change, I have to exit iTunes and come back in, choose another song, then the same thing happens. It is driving us crazy. Can you help?

Hmm, that's a new one, but see if stopping the first song before double-clicking the second one helps.
