How do i set a pass word for Time Machine

How do Iset a pass word for Time Machine?  Have a guest user on my computer and the icon for Backup and WD Smart ware show up.
Want to block guest from looking at back files. I use OS X version 10.8.5

The option to remove the disk in the TM preferences is so you can use another disk if you want.

My daughter managed to mess about with my iPod Model A1219 AOGA and she put in pass word nubers

You'll need to connect it to the iTunes library you normally sync it with and restore it.  If iTunes asks you for this passcode before it will let you proceed, connect the iPod to iTunes in recovery mode instead using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • How much Minimum Disk Space is Required for Time Machine?

Are there any recommendations from Apple for the size of external hard drive for Time Machine?
Also, is there any formula for the amount of hard drive space = how any days, months, or years of backup available?
Sorry about the poorly worded question.

    Size of HD = IBS + [30*DCD + 487*DCD]NM
    or
    Size of HD = IBS + 365NMDCD
    where
IBS = Initial Backup Size (GBs)
NM = Number of Months wanted before HD fills
DCD = Daily Churn Data in GBs
    So lets say
    IBS=160 GB
NM=24 (2 years wanted before having to worry about disk full)
DCD=0.05 GB of daily churned data on average (50 MB of changed and new data)
    Size of HD = 160 + 365240.05 = 598 GB
If you wanted just NM = 12 then the HD size should be around 350 to 400 GB
Much depends on how many months you want to go before being bothered with disk full and how much average daily data churn you have.
Note that TM will make much effort to clean up old data that can be safely deleted before giving up when disk becomes full. It will also provide you with the opportunity to clean up old backups yourself to free up space.
Of course you can always re-format the TM backup HD and start over again but you obviously lose your TM backup history. You can also to decide you can delete the oldest 6 months of data and keep the more recent history to continue on with thr freed up disk space.

  • How to turn off the 'Use disk for Time Machine?' warning

I have Time Machine set to OFF.
I use cloning software instead; "SuperDuper" with a "Voyager Q" unit attached via FW 800
I rotate my external backups HDs using 2 x 3.5" HDs.
How do I get rid of the annoying message; ‘Use disk for Time Machine?’ each time I attach an external HD?
    I have tried the solution at;
    http://www.macworld.com/article/133175/2008/04/105notmdrive.html
    but doesn't work for me.
Mind you, the article was written for 10.5 and I was hoping the same solution would apply to 10.6.
    Anyone have an answer?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Michael.

Think I just found the answer to my own question.
External drive has to be mounted on the desktop BEFORE the following command is run.
defaults write com.apple.TimeMachine DoNotOfferNewDisksForBackup -bool YES
    this assumes you've setup TM
Now I don't see that annoying message.

  • How to format an external drive used for time machine

My 150 Gig external hard drive showed too full for a time machine backup. It only showed 20 gig left. So I moved the time machine backup on it to the trash to make room for a new one. This did nothing. With the files in the trash the drive still shows full even though it has no time machine backup on it.
So I would like to know how I can format this drive again to get it to accept a brand new time machine backup. Or how do I get time machine to recognize the drive as empty instead of full.
I now know I should have at least a 500 gig drive to let time machine make it's plethora of backups. But the 150 gig drive is what I have right now to backup an 80 gig hard drive and I would like to start from scratch.
    Thanks,
    JJ Bula

With the files in the trash the drive still shows full
You need to empty the Trash before anything is actually removed from the drive.
If you want to completely erase the drive, launch Disk Utility, select the drive, go to the Erase pane and click "Erase".

  • How much to partition on External HD for Time Machine?

  • Setting up external HDD for Time Machine...

    Hi folks
I've got a 3TB external HDD and want to set it up for a Time Machine backup. Because of its size, I want to create 3 partitions so I can use it with both a Mac and PC, one NTFS, one exFAT and a Mac OS X Journaled. Would this cause any problems with the Time Machine backup because it's on a partitioned drive? Or should it really be on a single partitioned drive?
    Thanks in advance
    Gary

While it should work I recommend you not do it.
It is best to keep backups on their own drive, separate from any other use.   Additionally  1tb seems on the small side for a TM backup. The latter the drive TM has to work with the faster back in time you will be able to keep. Remember when TM runs out of space it will delete the oldest backups.
Given the price of HDs today ( I saw a 4tb external drive at NewEgg for a little over $100 last week), 1tb drives can be had for a lot less) I can see no reason to partition the drive.
    regards

  • TS1550 How do I fix the following error for Time Machine:

The backup disk is not Mac OS extended

    By doing this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Re-designate the drive for use with Time Machine.

  • How do I reformat my external drive for Time Machine?

I think I might have messed up My Passport (external hard drive) when I disconnected my iMac to take it to the Apple Store to have the screen repaired (was replaced).  I turned Time Machine off before I disconnected the external hard drive but didn't eject it.  I reconnected everything Monday morning and it was backing up fine until this afternoon but suddenly stopped and gave me warning messages about it not being able to back up.  The message directed me to Repair Disk which I tried but that didn't work.  and I was "told" to reformat the drive.  But when I reconnect it to my mac, the mac doesn't recognize that its there.  I don't know if its worth trying to fix, or if I should just get a new one.  (I have an on line back up service so all my data is safe and backed up elsewhere).  I've only had the drive for maybe 6 mts, or a little longer and I know it was far from full.  I have Time Machine turned off now and the drive disconnected .  Is it worth repairing.  If there is something wrong with it a new one might make more sense.  I hope I have explained this okay.   Thanks for any suggestions.  It is a Western Digital external drive.

WD drives are not all that reliable according to some reports going around.
And BUS powered drives are not good choices for backups if it's drawing too much current, Apple can cut if off in a update, use self powered drives instead.
You can use the drive, but as a transport drive, not as a vital backup.
TM drive isn't quite as good as a backup as it could be, and online storage is slow to upload and can be compromised or lost (it's happened before) so you should diversify more with clones and storage drives in addition to TM drives.

  • How do I choose a backup disk for Time Machine?

I'm using a 1T Seagate backup disk with 3 partitions to back up on Time Machine. Very suddenly, when it was mounted, the Time Machine icon disappeared, and the Time Machine Partition turned into the generic black Seagate partition-- same as the other two partitions. I ran Disk Utililty; supposedly, everything is fine. I didn't need any of the previous backups, so I reformatted the backup disk. In choosing a disk to use in the Time Machine preferences, I chose a partition. It did perform the backup, and the Time Machine icon was on the desktop while it was backing up, but when I ejected the disk and then plugged it back-- there was the generic icon again.
Also, when I cicked on command e, previously, I was given the option of ejecting one or all three partitions. Now, everything just ejects immediately. Seems like there is a glitch somewhere. In the Time Machine Preferences, the disk with the Time Machine icon at the top of the preferences has an option to select disk and then an option to remove. Why would I remove that disk? Very confusing.

The option to remove the disk in the TM preferences is so you can use another disk if you want.

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • Hello i forget the icloud id and pass word for my iphone how can i solve thes proplem

hello my iforget the icloud id and pass word for my iphone what can i do to solve thes problem ?

How could you forget the Apple ID and password? You used it to post your question. Is this a new iPhone? Or did you recently purchase it used?
If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for a previous owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. This is a security feature that prevents thieves from setting up and using a stolen or lost iPad or iPhone. You have no alternative. No must contact the previous owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the previous owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. You will never be able to activate the device and no one can help you do it.
