How do I set EFI mode in Z68A-GD80-B3 BIOS?
I am trying to install Windows 7 64-bit onto a Seagate 3TB drive on a brand-new MSI Z68A-GD80-B3 motherboard but Windows keeps insisting on using an MBR style partition. When I connected the drive to another computer and used the Seagate utility to create a GPT partition, Windows refuses to install to it because it thinks the BIOS is in BIOS mode and not EFI mode.
There is a complicated guide to force the EFI installer bootstrap here http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=184349 but having to do all this seems ridiculous for a motherboard UEFI BIOS that is advertised as having 3TB+ support.
So where is the setting (as I have seen on some other motherboards) that tells the bootable DVD/USB device that the BIOS is EFI and not legacy? Thanks!
Putting the system into RAID mode wasn't too bad since I was only experimenting with the setup anyway. However, after doing some research on how to use the EFI console it appears it is currently not possible to boot into a GPT disk when the ICH controller it set to RAID mode. :(
I tried wiping the drive, I tried installing the GPT boot and then installing Windows to it. Interestingly, the error message isn't a showstopper - it is merely a warning unlike the other error messages. If you click on the GPT partition and say install Windows will indeed go ahead and install to it. But when the BIOS tries to boot to it, it cannot. My investigation with EFI console shows that when the controller is in RAID mode the hard drive doesn't even show up in the list of available devices in the console. Also when using the console to list the available EFI drivers, they only have 2 IDE drivers (one Intel, one Marvell) and 2 AHCI drivers (same deal) - no RAID.
Furthermore, we appear to no be alone. I also have a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 for evaluation and it too has the same problem, both confirmed by my own tests and a message thread much like this one that states the EFI BIOS manufacturers have not written the EFI RAID driver for the Sandy Bridge architecture yet. (I don't know if this is true for any other mobo manufacturers besides MSI and Gigabyte.)
Anyway, I'm giving up for now on GPT and have formatted the 3TB drive as MBR. I am then using a special driver from Seagate that makes the remaining space appear as a separate drive. I suppose it would still be possible to combine this space if one were to create a spanning volume in Windows or Linux and combine the real 2TB volume with the virtual drive that contains the remaining space. But I'm going to just leave it as a separate volume.
The only troubling thing is when or if MSI finally releases a BIOS with an EFI RAID driver I'll feel compelled to format the whole system as GPT and start again. *grumblegrumble*
Isn't being on the bleeding edge of tech fun?

Z68a-GD80 b3 bios fail ?
Hi,
i recently bricked my p67a-gd65 b3 via bios flash (both bios corrupted), and i got the z68a-gd80 b3 in return from msi,
now i do need to say when i first turned on my pc i immediately noticed the blue bios light was flashing, so i knew the first bios had failed and its now running on the second bios.
So i figured, lets update the bios, and i downloaded the latest bios version 20.1. And so i booted into dos, started to update Intel ME and then it flashed the backup bios.... then it automaticly rebooted and the infinite bootcycle maraton began... everything powers on for 1 sec and it dies, powers on for 1 sec and it dies.. etc et, there are no blue bios lights on when powering on so i thing the bios is partly corrupted, enough to NOT boot, but also enough to not turn on the bios lights on the mobo anyone got any idea ? i really don´t want to rma the board cuz i just got it like a few days, and the RMA proces of the p67a/gd65 took almost 2 months :(
Thanks in advance! All you can do is try a full cmos clear w/ a bare bones set-up. What you should have done when you saw the blinking light was enable multi bios update in bios to recover the bad bios.
Probably the simplest thing to do is bring the board to a computer shop with an SPI programmer. It will probably cost around $50-$75 to get this fixed.
If you have a Sandy bridge CPU, stick with 7672vH5.zip unless there are issues. If you absolutely need to flash your bios, use the forum flash tool and archives.

Updating the Z68A-GD80 (B3) bios to use ivybridge cpu
Hi,
I bought the Z68A-GD80 (B3) board without realising that the ivybridge cpu's were only around the corner. Anyway I thought there would be a large price gap between the sandybridge and ivybridge cpu prices, how wrong could you be.
I haven't built the rig yet as I was waiting for a bios update to accommodate the jump to an ivybridge cpu and to make sure the board could support a ivybridge i5 3570K cpu model.
As there is only a 10 to 18 pound gap between the two cpu models is there any reason not to go for the ivybridge version? Also does the updated bios work properly?
Many thanks.....JohnQuote
Bernard, Froggy and flobelex, much appreciated. Can I ask if your answers remain the same in concern the G3 board as they did for the B3?
My reply would still be similar to Reply #2. Since you do have a 'G3', one benefit would be the ability to run a PCI-E 3.0 graphics card to it's full potential. Even PCI-E 3.0 is not all that superior in performance to earlier PCI-E 2.0 revisions. I have both, a GD80(G3) with a Sandy CPU and Ivy BIOS, and one with an Ivy. Rather than go into all the details, they both suck as far as I am concerned, with the Ivy CPU rig being the worse! The Ivy UEFI/BIOS's IMO are not ready for prime time. Even with two PCI-E 3.0 GTX680 cards in SLI, my eyes don't see any real world visual benefit over them running at PCI-E 2.0 on the other mainboard.
Soon as an ironclad user level procedure is developed that I can restore both primary and secondary chips back to Sandy BIOS's and ME7, I will do so. The Ivy CPU will be sold off. Performance wise, the 2700k is a kickbutt CPU compared to an Ivy on a 6 series chipset mainboard! -
Z68A-GD80 (B3) Bios problem
Hello experts,
I want to build up a new machine. So I bought the mainboard Z68A-GD80 and an Intel 3570k. This cpu was not supported from start of the mainboard but the seller told me that he updated BIOS to the newest version before selling the board and he ran it successfully with this BIOS. So I installed all componenets and what happened:
- The dual bios LED tells me that primary bios failes.
- CPU phase led showing phase 10 after switching on power and then changing to phase 2
- Screen is dark
- I dont have a case speaker so I cannot hear beeping
What do you suggest du do now?
Thanks so much!!
FlorianThe CPU phase lights are first at ten then at two is nominal. Those aren't going to tell you what's wrong unless none of them are on.
If you kept the power disconnected from a power source, grounded yourself before touching the circuitry, carefully put the CPU in, put in compatible RAM in correct slots, then all of the PSU connectors attached securely to the motherboard connectors, double checked the heatsync is attached securely, then connected the power cord, then powered on the computer. If BIOS doesn't appear on the monitor, go back to the sales person.
The heatsync is very important, if the thermal compound isn't carefully applied, or the heatsync itself incorrectly attached; the computer will not boot. -

MSI Z68A-GD80 B3 bios problem :(
Hi... I've got a very strange problem with my motherboard. The bios diode is blinking (I know that it means my first bios has failed). But I tried fixing method from topic with GD65 and it didn't work. Any ideas?
Remove the PSU power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS, reset making sure to enable BIOS update again, save & exit, & then see if the chip LED stops flashing.

How do I set form automatically in query mode
Hi !
I have to pass value of one field as parameter from one form to
another form and then execute the query on the next form based
on the passed value of the parameter. (all this should happen as
soon as I press one button on the first form).
My problem is that unless I put the second form in the enter
query mode before accepting the value of the field, whatever
value I pass on from the first form will not be of any use.
How do I set the mode of the form to query mode. Since
system.mode is the read only variable and no value can be
assigned to it, so how can I handle this situation ?
Thanks in advance,
Shobhit
nullHi Shobhit,
Try ENTER_QUERY command in the PRE-FORM trigger of second form.
EXECUTE_QUERY in WHEN-NEW-FORM-INSTANCE and set the parameter
values to the respective fields in PRE-QUERY trigger.

Z68A-GD80 (B3): "virtu cannot run on this iGPU"
I have the following system specs:
Motherboard: MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3), bios 17.5/20120111
CPU: i7-2600K
Win 7 x64
Intel iGPU drivers 15.26.8.64.2696 (latest version for win 7 64)
2 MSI nvidia GPU cards (1 580 and 1 570) in SLI
I run folding at home on the graphic cards of this system most of the time when not running graphics intensive programs, and the hit on the system is not so bad most of the time, but after nearly a year of it, I decided to try running the IGPU, so that the system could use that for web browsing, videos etc, while the folding processes could churn away on the discrete GPUs.
I enabled i mode in the bios, and loaded an old set of virtu drivers I had downloaded when I first got the MB (1.2.102). The Virtu control panel loaded without error. The panel has an update check feature, which I used and then downloaded the most recent version, 1.2.114. When the system rebooted after the installation, virtu would not run, instead displaying the message "Virtu cannot run on this integrated graphics processor. Disabling Virtu, and exiting. (Remember to enable Virtu after the problem is fixed.)"
What's the problem that I need to fix? What really puzzles me is that 1.2.102 worked, but 1.2.114 wouldn't.
Thanks
MarkHave you retested with 1.2.102 and does that still work ?
If it does, then I would report the anomaly with the latest driver to Lucidlogix. I don't quite know how to interpret the expanded release notes of Virtu, but one of the known issues with the latest version states:
Quote
Known issues in this driver version
The following are the open issues with current driver release:
General
Antivirus and firewall may popup a message box – the user should approve ‘Virtu Control panel’ access the net
Control panel may flicker when switching between Tabs
i-Mode (display connected to integrated GPU output)
3DMark Vantage may crash with FRAPS
Virtu control panel may show some artifacts when system’s desktop background is configured to Windows Classic theme.
When Dual GPU optimization (SLI/Crossfire) is enabled, performance may stay unaffected.
The very last known issue may be the problem -
Getting Z68A-GD80 (G3) to wake up every single day...
all,
is there a way to get my PC to boot every single day? I used to be able to do it with a gigabyte mobo, but I don't see the option in my Z68A-GD80 (G3) bios menu (there is RTC alarm, but that seems to be restricted to once a month).
so, is it possible?
if not, how can i configure a wake-up event via win7 x64 (as "OS" seems to be an option in the bios for wake-up events?)
any help much appreciated. In the UEFI/BIOS, be sure to disable EuP 2013 (C1E might be the other one to disable along with it).
Added: Also disable Spread Spectrum. -
MSI z68A-GD80 (g3) "B2" error with ned gtx 970
Hey.
Hardware info:
MSI z68A-GD80 (g3) - Bios version. V18.8
Intel i5 2500k
4x4GB kingston hyperX 1600mhz
MSI 970 gaming g4
PSU : Seasonic SS-500GB
My problem is that when I'm trying to install the new GPU i get the error "b2" when i boot. If i chance back to my old gpu (560 ti) or the gpu on the CPU there is no problem. Also i have tested the gtx 970 in another PC and it works.
After some reseach i found out that i need a bios update. I have tried this but with no luck, cant upgrade bios. I have use "MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing" tools with bios from MSI hp (I choose the (g3) bios) . I can get the bios on the USP stick but when I'm trying to install the new bios i got the error "Bios corruption detected !!" and stopped. I don't know what to do now, i hope that you can help me
The usp stick is fat32I had the exact same problem as the original poster - same motherboard, same old graphics card (560ti) and same new graphics card (970 gaming) and got the same B2 error code and the PC not going beyond that.
I flashed the bios and that fixed the problem - the exact version I used was on this page:
Ok, this forum isn't allowing me to post a link to it, but just go to the official page for the motherboard on MSI's website - then click on Support and Service Location, which should open up the list of BIOS upgrades...
The top one as of writing this is version 19.2
To do the flashing of the BIOS you must load the downloaded exe file onto a flash drive and run it from there. Don't worry if it seems like your PC is hanging, it just takes a while (while still in Windows). It then reboots and will finish up flashing the BIOS (you'll see a red bar with the warning on a black background with white text).
After doing that, my GTX970 GAMING works like an absolute charm! I can now finally enjoy Minecraft like it was meant to be played haha (kidding, I played GTA 5 the whole weekend with EVERYTHING to the absolute MAX!)
Hope this helps if you are experiencing this extremely annoying error. -
Z68A-GD80 (G3) bricked?
hi,
once again i find my self in need for help, just flashed my z68a-GD80 g3 bios with the lastest bios (J00) from msi page (Bios.exe on a usb key as indicated) and once my system rebooted...well never came to live again... now when i turn it on ALLWAYS black screen, don't even post...
is my board bricked?
i've tried clear cmos, with rear button and with the jumper, removed graphic card, removed memory's and allways the same, computer turns on but no screen.
my computer hardware is the one on my sigGive flobelix's recommendations a try, but what in the world possessed you to flash an Ivy Bridge CPU support UEFI/BIOS in the first place?
For mainboards with a Sandy Bridge CPU, version 18.8 would have been the correct and better choice.
If nothing works after the CMOS clear and trying with 1 stick of RAM, yes, the board is now a brick. Only way to restore it will be to take it to a pc shop that has an SPI flash programming device, or send it to an MSI Service Center to restore it for you. Be sure to have the secondary chip flashed as well. -

Hello,
Since upgrading to BIOS v20.1 on my Z68A-GD80 (B3) I've run into a minor issue. I've disabled the onboard NICs because I have a PCIe NIC that I use. When I resume from sleep, the onboard NICs are suddenly enabled.
This appears to be a bug with the v20.1 BIOS. I've tried resetting back to factory defaults and clearing the CMOs, to no avail.
Any ideas?Quote from: 87ninefiveone on 26-February-13, 09:34:49
OP, completely off topic, but at the risk of being so...
You've got pretty much the same basic system I do. Are you able to OC with your 2600K on that BIOS? I'm running v20.0 and all options to OC are unavailable or AUTO only.
Yes, I am able to overclock my 2600K with the v20.1 BIOS. I'm not exactly thrilled with it, though. In addition to the NIC issue I'm having issues with my sound card as well. When I play games my friends complain of buzzing noises when using VOIP, which are coming from me. I never had that issue before v20.1.
Quote from: Froggy Gremlin on 26-February-13, 17:31:14
This is one of the rare boards that can be crossflashed using a Z68A-GD80(G3) UEFI/BIOS successfully. This Beta I have linked is outstanding. Further down in the Beta thread, there is also the final release J22 which I have not tried and most likely won't.
Really? I may try that BIOS since I'm not very happy with v20.1.
UPDATE: I flashed to the G3 BIOS v19.2 and the NICs still are enabled when coming out of sleep. I'm going to test to see if the sound issue still occurs. I'm not hopeful at this point.
UPDATE 2: The G3 BIOS v19.2 is no better, unfortunately. I was able to duplicate the sound issue for the first time and hear what my friends have been complaining about. When the system has to work there is a "buzzing" noise that is transmitted over the VOIP connection - it sounds like a fly buzzing around. This happens with the Steam client - I'm going to try Skype now.
UPDATE 3: Skype is even worse. The buzzing is continuous whenever I'm in a game. Is a rollback to v17.5 possible at this point? -
How to set Compatibility Mode for a single site in ie10
This question was originally posted on the Answers forum -
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie10-windows_7/how-to-set-compatibility-mode-for-a-single-site-in/187152e3-142a-4d96-8d1b-af82ef571eec
I am having problem with getting ie10 to set ie9 compatibility for a single site (sharepoint.contoso.com).
When I add this website in Compatibility View Settings (Alt > Tools > Compatibility View Settings > 'Add this Website') it adds the domain 'contoso.com' and not the individual website (sharepoint.contoso.com).
This cause other sites (www.contoso.com) to be configured to use compatibility mode. Because this is a separate site (different web server) to the site sharepoint.contoso.com (sharepoint 2010 server) we need different compatibility settings.
Using a different example to explain the issue -
Microsoft has three websites that are different websites created by different developers written in different programming languages and they only work with certain browsers.
microsoft.com (Website1 created by Developer1) - compatible with ie8/ie9/ie10
msdn.microsoft.com (Website2 created by Developer2) - compatible with ie8/ie9
technet.microsoft.com (Website3 website created by Developer3) - compatible only with ie10
The only thing the three website share is the URL contains 'microsoft.com'.
Marking 'msdn.microsoft.com' to run in compatibility mode affects the other 2 websites - mainly technet.microsoft.com which will not work now since it only runs in pure ie10 mode.
Should you be able to add an individual site to the compatibility list instead of all sites that have .microsoft.com in the URL? Am I missing a simple setting in the ie10?
As a workaround I am using the F12 Developer Tools to set the Browser Mode which temporary sets the compatibility mode. However this is not a nice solution to the end users at our organisation.problem is not solved for non corporate environments...
You could start your own thread. Then if you got that answer and it was marked Answered you would have the ability to unmark it. The OP of this one seems satisfied. Also note that this is TechNet. Consumers can get help on Answers
forums.
Robert Aldwinckle
Oh! I wrote it wrong: I should have said: This is not solved for NON-AD environments. No demands what so ever to use Window 7/8 professional in a small corporation or on a big corporation with Island of smaller departments for example offshore.
The problem is that the thread is not "Answered" by the OP, its is marked answered by a moderator (and same moderator that did the answer) so no way of telling if the OP is satisfied.
But you are right in the fact that I am almost kidnapping the thread. But a complete answer would benefit all in this case I would presume.
