How do I set my ipad to pull up all apps that will open .jpeg files? In other words, how do i set file associations?

As King Penguin has stated it is done automatically and you cannot change the associations on your own either at this point. It is one of those features that would be nice to have, so if you like - ask Apple to add the feature via ....

I am trying to USB sync Word, Excel, and PDF files between the ipod and the PC.
Pretty sure icloud has to have the internet to work, but I can try to see what USB options there are there when time permits.

You can use GP Preferences (=GPP) to perform this task.
You can simply create a "File type" item within "Folder options" and specify the needed parameters.

Of course you need some prerequisites (at least one Vista or Winows 2008 for management and the GPP CSE on each target machine).

Set file association using GPP

Hi
I am trying to change the default application used to open a particular file type. I tried it on the person's Windows 7 computer (in an AD domain).
I have tried changing the default file association using Control Panel. However, the text and the tick box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is greyed out. Also, when I browse and navigate to the .exe I want to be the
default program, after selecting it the new .exe is not added to the list.
I thought I'd use Group Policy Preferences instead. However, when I right click Folder Options under Control Panel Settings and choose 'Open With' it won't accept the path I specify because the application is not installed on the server on which I am
editing Group Policy. ????
Is there a way for me to set this, please?
Ideally, I would like to be able to edit the clients directly without the need to use GPP where an application is used just on one machine. But, it would also be useful to be able to set some global options without the need to edit every single person's
file associations.
If anyone knows how to make changing file associations from the client editable that would be great. I don't understand why it is greyed out - is this something I may have set in Group Policy and have forgotten about?

Simply type the path, do not use the browse button :)

How do I set File Sharing in iTunes to keep files up-to-date? i tried iTunes File Sharing, but the updates to the files never transferred across the USB during sync. Tried to use Documents to Go, but the Apple behavior keeps them from syncing via USB, so when I am home and have no wifi/internet there is no way to transfer the files. The other apps I have looked at also use wifi/internet to get around the problematic Apple behavior, so there is no way to connect via USB that I have found other than the iTunes. Have not been able to locate any helpful information to configure the File Sharing to hotsync the files between pod and computer.

How to create new file association

Hello,
I have a program that uses the .pez file extension.
Now I want to change the association so that it is opened with my desired program.
Therefore I tried:
xdg-mime default prezi-desktop.desktop application/pez
However, this does not work. The .pez file is still opened with Fileroller on Gnome 3.
How do I associate new file types with an application? The program prezi-desktop is not visible in the "Open with" menu. Hence, I cannot change the file association with Gnome.

Hi there, I refered to this wiki page: Default Applications
Scroll down and you'll see an section titled "Gnome 3".
Basically you can try running
gconf-editor
and tinkering with settings there.
Or the more lower-level solution is to dig into either if these files
/usr/share/applications/defaults.list (global)
~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list (per user, overrides global)

How to "divorce" linked file associations (e.g. .rar and .cbr)?

Mac OS X links some file associations together as if the extensions were synonymous. This is obviously desirable in some cases, e.g. .jpg and .jpeg. But it is equally obviously undesirable in others, e.g. .zip and .cbz, and .rar and .cbr; treating them the same just because the underlying compression algorithy is the same is absurd (by that reasoning, .jar would be considered synonymous with .zip!) These obviously need to be opened in different apps, but the OS won't permit this (other than by drag-and-drop or "Open with...").
I need a way to change what extensions the OS thinks are equivalent. Any ideas? I searched MacUpdate for "association" but didn't find anything relevant, so it looks like there's no app tailored to this purpose.

Yes, of course. If you change one, it changes the other. I repeat, the OS itself is treating .rar and .cbr as synonymous, like .jpg and .jpeg.
UPDATE: It seems that the OS does not do this with .cbz to the extent that it does with .cbr. By default, it treats .cbz as if it were .zip, but if you use Get Info -> Change all on .cbz, you can in fact set it to a different app. This is not the case with .cbr; if you change .cbr it changes .rar, and vice versa. This stuff has to be in a plist somewhere.

Missing Icons, unable to set file association properly after upgrade to CS6

I am working with a client that had CS3 on Windows XP and upgraded to CS 5.5, and now has upgraded that to CS6. Her file associations were all set back to CS3, even though it shows that CS3 is uninstalled. I manually changed them and it will open the INDesign files but I cannot get icons to show for anything. I can see the icons in the shell folder and I can pick one but it will not show in Windows. Is there a way to clean up her system easily and make CS6 the default Adobe - and make sure none of the others have lingering file associations or references? I dont think they uninstalled all the way.

There is no easy way. you will have to clean out all file associations and reinstate them manually. You are simply exceeding the context handlers, a limitation in the operating system itself and usualyl a sign of too many programs trying to link their actions to a file association liek right-click menu entries for compression tools, virus scanners, viewers etc.

How to kill QuickTime file associations?

Quicktime has hijacked all my media file associations. The files will still open in whatever program I choose (right click > Open with). But no matter what I do I cannot remove that stupid QuickTime logo icon. I read there is a fix by deleting registry keys.

Try asking in the QT for Windows area vs. here as a start. Though IIRC QT for Windows has the ability to set or unselect the associations in the preferences.

Hi,
Here are two methods for you.
1. CSV file is 'comma separated values' in text file and so by default it will be saved as a .txt file. However while saving it onto the desktop you can choose .xls format in the drop down that specifies the format. Then try to open the file in Excel.
2. Right click on one of the text files stored and open it with the Excel. Then right click on the file name and go to 'Get Info'. From the get info window, change the file extension and under the open with drop down select Excel.
If these two options are not working then probably the file cannot be imported to Excel or Excel is not installed.

Cannot set File Association in Vista to Acrobat Reader 9.0

After installing Acrobat Reader 9.0 on Vista Ultimate SP1, I am no longer able to associate the pdf extension with Reader. When attempting to change the pdf file association, Reader is not offered as an option. When clicking the Browse button and pointing to the Reader 9.0 file, it still is not offered as an option. Reader works fine when loading files from within the application.
Do I need to edit the Registry? Which key and what value?

When installing Dreamweaver, I chose to associate a broad array of file extensions with the program. I would like selectively remove some of these automatic file associations (e.g. .php). I should have been more specific that my ultimate goal was to have .php files not automatically associated with any program (so that I could modify the file extensions of some .php files). I don't believe this could be achieved by changing the automatic association via the operating system (because you must select another program to automatically associate with a given file type). However, my particular problem is resolved because I discovered that I could just deselect "hide extensions for known file types" in the "view" tab of "folder and search options". This way I could change the .php extensions even though they were still automatically associated with dreamweaver. Although this may be an obvious solution to many, I thought I would share it here in case anyone else finds themself stuck in the same way.

I am working on an app that requires QT to play .smi files and can't seem to get it to work. I was using this code in the Inno Setup file:

With the Treo, you had the option of setting one ring tone for known callers and an alternate for unknowns. You could also add individual tones to specific callers. Given how 'clever' the iphone seems to be, I keep thinking there is a better option (that I'm missing) other than adding the ringtone individually for each of my several hundred contacts.

It is not possible with advanced file I/O LabVIEW VIs.
There is a possible workaround by using low level Windows functions in a dll.
Perhaps the easier would be to set your properties at the top of your file.
