How do i set my time capsule up to function as an external hard drive? Is this even possible? I had a friend tell me it woudl be a good set up to get a time capsule with my Macbook Air to use as a gigantic external hard drive but then was unbale to wlak me through the setup after I bought the equipment. Any suggestions?

It depends on what you already have equipment wise..
Just bridge the TC..
I cannot walk you through it either if you use v6 airport utility.. due to my refusing to run Lion until it gets network issues sorted.

Go to manual setup..
Internet tab
Connection sharing.. select off bridge mode in the drop down box.
You can then if you like turn off wireless under airport wireless.. The TC is now a plain network client with hard disk.
Personally I would keep the wireless on but sort the channels manually if you already have a wireless AP or router.

You will probably also need filebrowser loaded on the ipad to find the files.
Is the ipad necessary btw.. ?? If you only want to play the file to your TV you can buy a WD Live TV.. unlike the Apple TV it is a media player.. and can play files of almost any format direct from the TC.

The only way to reliably protect data, especially on an external hard drive, is to encrypt it. Permissions don't have to be respected. One way to encrypt data is to create an encrypted sparse bundle disk image with Disk Utility. See:

Time Capsule disconnects when I connect my external hard drive

All my software is up to date, but when I connect my Western Digital external hard drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, the Time Capsule disconnects from the internet, my PC (which is connected via ethernet), and my MacBook Pro (via wi-fi). Sometimes it'll work okay for a few hours and then just goes incommunicado later in the day. If I remove the external hard drive from the USB port and restart, I have no problems. But once I plug it back in, it happens all over again. What's going on here?

That'll work as well, just not as convenient when you are on the go. You may want to pick one of these up as well. (not sure which plug you need, but there are a bunch of different ones on ebay).

Ok, here's my deal. I backed up our old laptop onto an external drive. We got the new laptop and my wife bought a new iPod. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes onto the new computer and posted the questions above. I guess I need more help so here goes.
Is there a way to use the library she had on the old laptop? I'm writing this on her behalf as she is basically technically ingorant and I am only slightly more knowledgeable but I know zero about iPods. Apparently she had her old library set up so some of the songs on her iPod we linked to the songs in my daughters iTunes folder? I have just bought a new iMac having switched from Windows, and am very much a beginner when it comes to all things Apple. Previously I had used my NAS hard drive with my old windows pc. i successfully used it to transfer a lot of data from the old pc to the iMac but can't seem to get it recognised when I try to configure time machine. I have downloaded the latest version of Iomega Home storage manager which appears in the application folder in the dock, but when I click on The HSM icon it just disappears and nothing happens. I can access the drive through the Bonjour service and can see its contents in Finder. I have looked through the forums here but much of the info assumes a level of knowledge that i don't have. Is there an 'idiot's guide' anywhere to enable me to set up time machine to use the network hard drive?

If you're already using the Time Capsule's disk for Time Machine backups, it's not recommended to also use that disk for other things. You'd probably be a lot happier with a disk directly connected to your Mac.

How can I set up SMB file sharing to share my PC external hard drive on my Mac with no password protection?

I am having the worst trouble with two things. I am very aware how to get the server to show up via SMB, but every time I log off the Macbook, the server's disappear. OK, so I went into "System Preferences" and hit "Users and Accounts" and added the server as a log in item. Worked well, except how do I stop that password prompt from coming up? I am using a Guest account with no password but I continue to get the password prompt. There is nowhere to hit remember password or anything. I have the option to remember the password in the keychain but I have no way of preventing the pop up.
Another issue I'm having is I have a Canon Pixma MP620 printer connected to my PC through USB. Three other PC's can connect wirelessly to print through the home network. My Mac does not find the printer, and when I manually add it, it recognizes it but WILL NOT print. It comes up with error messages like Authentican Required and connection issues between printers.
I have no password protection on my PC and have enabled sharing of all devices and folders through the Homegroup on the PC. I just can't figure it out. I am new to Mac and would love to get these two things figured out.

I have a WD 1TIG hard drive and are using usb connection, is it possible to use fire wire with these? I have had trouble with a lot of the videos I Imported, once they downloaded the file in the viewer window showed up blank and when I mouse over them it places a picture of another file in the window and wont drag and drop into the movie window, like their corrupted or something? Had to delete just about all of them and start again. Also is it possible to select a bunch of videos in the viewer window as to change the dates to the correct dates? All I have been able to do is "select all" which is no help.

As Chris says... but if the media is on an external drive as above then you also need to make sure the external drive has the same drive letter on the system you are moving to or iTunes won't be able to find the files.

Then something is wrong. Changing the schedule will only deal with the symptom (and give up one of the better features of Time Machine's usually quick and unobtrusive hourly backups).
See if the size of the backups makes sense, considering what you've changed since the previous one. If it seems much too large, that may be the problem. See #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for some common culprits and ways to see just what's going on.
If the sizes seem reasonable, see #D2 in the same link for things that can cause extra-slow backups.

I did a typo. My current computer is a 2010 1/2 iMac. The stand alone monitors are still out of my price range so I'm looking for other options. Why, if it told you you have insufficient space on your computer, would it suggest making more space available on your phone?
At a guess, you have insufficient space on your phone. Installing software will typically require more space than the final size of the software, perhaps even twice or three times as much, for the installation process. You can easily dump some videos or music temporarily, and then synch them back in afterwards.
