How do I set Safari to prompt me to choose a filename when downloading?

I can't figure this out at all. How do I set Safari to give me a dialog box in which I can choose my own filename when downloadiing a file? Right now, as soon as I click "download linked file" it just puts the files straight on my desktop with whatever filename was assigned to it.
This will help me identify files as I often download files saved with numerical names.

Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

You need an IMAP-type email service rather than a POP-type mail service. IMAP automatically does what you want. Contact your email provider to see if they offer IMAP.

You can't use the remote app to setup a network. If your physical remote isn't working you will need borrow another or purchase a replacement.

IMAP email is server based. The messages stay on the server and just view them remotely with an email client like Thunderbird. If you want to keep a copy on your computer you need to move a copy of the email message to a folder under Local Folders. If you delete the message off the server, it is going to be gone otherwise.
The delete from the server option is a POP email server. It does not apply with IMAP email.

HA! I figured the find my iphone out!!!!! You can have more than one icloud account in "Mail, Contacts and Calendars". So my husband's & kids' phone icloud account under "settings, icloud "is their individual @me.com account. Set it to everything you want EXCEPT Find My Iphone. Then under "settings, mail/contacts/calendars" you set up both accounts (your @me.com which may already be there), then add another with the main appleID and enable ONLY Find My Iphone. Now when any of us log into Find My Iphone from any device with our main apple ID for the app store, all the devices show up!!!! YIPPEE. I made my own day!
I think the message I got previously was because I hadn't disabled the find my iphone on the @me.com account first.

You must be talking about email aliases. Log into icloud.com with a browser, go to the email page and click the cog wheel icon in the upper right. Go to preferences>accounts. YOu can define aliases there. Note that they must now be @icloud.com named emails.

Here is the scenario. I have one Safari window open, I click a link that is on that page, I have Safari set to open a new window (not a new tab) so that is what it does. It opens a new window from that link, but the new window is too small. It is about 1/4 the size of a window that fills up the screen. Next time a new window automatically opens, resize it to the desired size by dragging the lower right corner. Then, click on the red button in the upper left to close it.
Now, select a link in your existing browser window to open the 2nd window. It ought to be the same size as what was set previously.
Let me know if that works.

I want to set Safari to always perform check if it is the default browser every time it starts.
The first time I opened Safari, I asked it not to check to see if it is the default browser. Now, I do not find any way to change that setting back to ask it to perform this check every time Safari starts.

You can change that setting by going to Safari/Preferences and select the General tab.
Click the pop up menu where you see: Default web browser

If you click the Safari icon in your Dock, it's going to open Safari regardless, same with Firefox or any other browser you might use. Once it's launched, there's no option available.

How can I get Safari to prompt for cookies?

I've always used Firefox, but would love to move to Safari for its iCloud integration, but it's a major frustration and a deal breaker that it doesn't provide an option to prompt for setting cookies. Every other major browser does. What's the deal?
Does anyone know of an extension that will prompt me to accept or reject cookies before they're set? Is there a Terminal command I can run? Anything?
I take my privacy seriously. Unless I am logging into a site, I have no desire to accept a cookie, especially from Google or Facebook who will sell their grandmother if they could make enough money and get away with it.

At least in the first one (which is free) all it seems to do is let me delete cookies after the fact or on quitting and manually set cookies as favorites. But not setting something as a favorite doesn't seem to prevent the cookies from getting set, which seems to defeat the whole purpose.
I don't want some big, complicated mess or a pile of features that I have to fiddle with in every browser session. I just want this to work like it does in Firefox, or Chrome, or Opera, or any other browser. Prompt when a site tries to set a cookie and let me accept it or reject it. If I reject it, it stays rejected until I reset Safari. Why is that so difficult?
I wish Apple would get over it's obsessive phobia of anything approaching an advanced feature or interface element and just make things work again.
