How do I set up a user on the second hard drive

Hi all,
I recently bought a 2x500gb mac mini.
When you get the machine, one HD has OSXLion Installed and the other HD is empty.
What I want to do is set up a user (i.e. desktop, documents, downloads etc etc) on the empty HD and password protect it.
In other words I want my family to have all thier user profiles on one HD and have my work user profile on the other HD.
Is this possible without installing a whole new OSX Lion on the other drive?
Thanks in advance!
Ray

After creating the account, open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, unlock it, control-click that account, choose Advanced Options, and change its home folder path. Alternatively, copy the folder in the Finder and use the Terminal to replace its existing home folder with a symlink to the desired location.

  • How Come windows 7 can't boot off the second hard drive on MBP?

i have 2 ssd in my macbook pro. but the second drive (located in the superdrive slot) will not allow windows to boot while the first HDD is in.  When i remove the first HDD, the 2nd hdd boots. this doesnt make and sense as the second bay is still a sata bootable bay as it was the old superdrive slot.  i had switched the hdds too and was able to boot to mac when it was in the second bay.

Starting up from a system version older than the original one is not supported and usually not possible.

  • How can I set up my TC as an external hard drive only?

How can I set up my TC as an external hard drive for my iMac and my MacBook?
I baught it for the extra space but don't know how to use it. I just keeps on wanting to back up files.
    Help me please.

    Hi,
Thank you for great advice re SuperDuper.
You wasnt to know we didnt live in  USA.  We will try to get the full retail version of Leopard off the net.  We will also phone round the apple resellers.
In the meantime, we are happy running Tiger with the knowledge that SuperDuper has cloned our hard drive in case of a disaster.
SuperDuper recommended backing up the hard drive with a new user account if we were using filevault on the master account.  We backed up our hard drive without creating a new user with filevault as we could not read the pdf `Instuctions as preview was not responding.
Is this copy safe to use as a bootable drive or should we copy our entire HD again using a new user account without filevault?

  • How do I reformat the second hard drive in the Mac Mini Server (Late 2012)?

In Disk Utility, I don't see the second hard drive, I only see the SSD that I installed myself in the main boot drive. How do I gain access to  reformat the second drive?

Did you reinstall the OS after you installed the SSD?
If so it would have created a Fusion drive that looks like one drive.
If you go to System Report, what shows under the SATA bus? You should see both the SSD and the HD if it is recognized to some degree.

  • Mover user file to second hard drive

I have a new iMac with a SSD on which applications are loaded, and everthing else is there by default.  But I wanto store music, documents, photos, etc on the second hard drive.  Can I just drag the "user" file to the second hard drive, since that's the file that contains docs, photos, etc?

Yes, but if you want to use it as something other than a backup, you also need to open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, control-click your account, and change the home folder path. This will look like /Volumes/volumename/foldername/ when changed.

  • How to exculde the second hard drive backup from time machine of lion os

My Mac Pro 2010 mid version is using Mac Lion OS, and I have installed three internal hard drives (two 3T hard drives for storage one 2T hard drive for time machine hard drive). When I start to run the time machine to backup the system hard drive, the time machine will include those internal hard drives automatically, and it stop backup and claim time machine is lack of storage space. Of course I know it is not big enough to backup those extra hard drive. However, I just only need to backup the system drive only, but I cannot locate any setting related how to exclude other internal hard drive in time machine. So I still cannot backup my system drive yet.

    See:

    10.  Can I exclude things from Time Machine backups?

  • How do I access my iTunes library on a second hard drive?

I installed a 128MG SSD, which is too small for storing my iTunes library. My iTunes library is on a second hard drive (my Mac Pro has four internal hard drives). I went to iTunes Preferences. Under Advanced Preferences "iTunes Media folder location" I selected my second hard drive and found my iTunes folder. But iTunes continues to show only the (few) songs on my SSD, without the (many) songs or playlists from my second hard drive. How do I get iTunes to shows the songs and playlists from the iTunes folder on my second hard drive?

You will hopefully only have one library file which controls everything. Hold down the option key while starting iTunes and guide it to the location of the library.itl file.

  • How do I set a certain amount of an external hard drive to be used by Time Machine?

I've just got a new Macbook Pro, and I have an External Toshiba Hard Drive that I'd like to use for storage and with Time Machine. I don't want the Time Machine backups to eat up all 500 Gb, is there a way to controll its appetite and allot it, say, 100 GB?

You can partition the hard drive using Disk Utility; however, depending on the size of your internal drive, 100 GB is not going to last very long. It is generally recommended that your TM backup drive be at least 3 x the size of your internal hard drive. So, how large is your hard drive?

  • Re: How to use the second hard drive in Satellite A300?

I have been given a second hand Satellite A300 that was being thrown out due to a faulty DVD.
I fixed the DVD and have a perfect working system.
On opening the case I discovered it has 2 x 250GB hard drives. I checked CMOS and the 2 drives show. Yet, Vista only shows the one drive.
Excuse my ignorance but how do I access the second drive?

I have Satellite A300 with two hard drives and each HDD has other operating system. Both HDDs are recognized properly.
I dont know what is wrong there but both HDDs should be recognized automatically.
Try to set BIOS to default settings and check it again.
Try to start bootable Microsoft installation disc and check if both HDDs are shown in setup.
I just hope there is no some hardware problem.

  • How do you set Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) for new Hard Drive?

I have a new hard drive that I'm about to have installed into my iMac. The drive is a WD1001FALS (Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB). The only concern I have is that by all accounts it is a bit louder than some other drives, although everything being relative I don't know what that means to me since I've not heard it run yet.
Still, the 320GB drive currently in the iMac is absolutely inaudible and while I'll make some concessions for speed and size I'd like to minimize the amount of noise coming out of the box. I know that the drive supports Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM), however its default state is "disabled". Is there a way, either through the OS or third party software to enable this feature?

I just wanted to close out this question.
I never received a clear answer but in the end I don't need to use the function. My concern was that a new WD1001FALS would be louder than the OEM 320GB HDD in my iMac to the point that I wouldn't be happy with it. Not wanting to trade speed for quiet I passed on the Green caviar and went for the Black. After living with it for several weeks I can say that it is very quiet and while I don't know if it's measurably louder than the old drive, it's not enough for me to notice (and I'm pretty picky).
So, I'm happy with the drive as-is, case closed.

  • How do I add a second hard drive to my dv7-3060us?

I'm very short of space on my HP originally installed 500GB hard drive and need more storage space. I have a new Seagate 750GB drive, 7200 rpm, and would like to install it. When I opened the case to access the second hard drive compartment, I was stymied when I found no connectors pre-installed. What do I need to do to install this drive?
    Thanks!

My old hard drive crashed and had to get it replaced. How do I reinstall my old library to the new hard drive from my iphone4s so I don't lose my music?

Officially you don't. Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
Note: The information below hasn't been updated since early 2013.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How do I access new second hard drive?

Hi! I am newbie, I am sorry if this a dumb question...
How do I access my second hard drive?
    This is what I have:
    SparcStation5 170Mhz, 192MB memory.2HDD (one 4.3GB w/ OS, second Hdd 4.3GB)
I had my sparc working with Solaris 8 just perfect!
I added the second hard drive, no problems, I formatted the HDD from withing Solaris OS, (I can probe-scsi from openBoot promt and it showes OK), everything is OK so far, I can see the send hard drive using format, I can partition it and create slices on it, everything seems to be OK, I have no problems making partitions and everything on that Hdd. But when I try 'ls', I can't see anything on that disk, any suggestions? I tried several ways from my manual/book, including mount and it reads 'no acces point on mount' or somthing like that.
this is what I see from format command:
disk 0. (seegate 4.3GB.....) this is my new hard drive (already formated and partioned, I created a new partition /usr with 3.75GB on partition 6. Partition 3 is used by the hdd with a totoal of 4GB . this shows as c0t1d0
disk 1. (SUN4.2GB) this is the hard drive with the OS Solaris 8. this is c0t3d0
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks!
    Murillo

    hi there ...
    read below--
Find out the address of the drive
    STOP+A
At the OK prompt, type probe-scsi. This will list all scsi devices on the system. Find the new drive.
Type boot -r so the OS will see the new drive.
Login as root and type format. Pick the new drive. The drives are listed as c(controller #)t(scsi id or target #)d(disk #). Label drive is required (it will tell you if the drive is not labeled).
Next, type partition. Partition the drive as required (always leave partition 2 as the whole drive as it is informational to the OS
Type print to list the current partitions. When you are done making changes type label
To return to the OS prompt, type quit twice
    newfs /dev/dsk/DRIVE-ADDRESS
    (ie c0t1d0s0) (controller 0 target(ID) 1 disk 0 slice(partition) 0).
mkdir directory, where directory is the directory you want to mount the drive on
    (ie, /disk2)
    mount /dev/dsk/DRIVE-ADDRESS directory
Add the new drive to your /etc/vfstab file.
    (ie. /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0 /disk2 ufs 1 yes - )
