How do i set up airplay on apple tv 1st generation?

I have an older first generation AppleTV and want to be able to use airplay. I've read different forums that say you can use airplay if you jailbreak the Apple TV but I have had no success with this. Is there a way to do this without jailbreaking my Apple TV?
I am open to jailbreaking it if somebody can direct me to a accurate source with this info. Thanks!
product info: 1st generation Apple TV, 150 GB model , connected it to Toshiba brand LCD HDTV

you can't airplay to it
but you can use airtunes which is using it as speaker for the computer in itunes or using airfoil (a paid program which let all audio be played out the speakers of the tv or receiver the Apple TV is connected to)

  • HT4437 Can I use AirPlay for Apple TV 1st generation

Is it possible to stream from iPad or iPhone to Apple TV 1st generation.

No, Airplay does not work on AppleTV 1.  The software does not handle the protocol.
While Apple TV 1 can handle the Airtunes protocol for audio, current iOS versions seems to ignore this from apps like Music.
Your only option for audio on current iOS I've found is to use Remote app to control an itunes library for music and use 'Airplay' to the AppleTV for the music - iTunes still allows Airplay devices output for audio.
You could also control AppleTV connected to a Sync or Share iTunes library using Remore but of course computer needs to be running.

  • Which share setting to use for Apple TV 1st generation?...

I want to export a project in a format that will play on a 1st generation Apple TV.  But under the Share settings, in Apple Devices, both the 720p and 1080p options indicate they will not work with 1st generation Apple TV.  How do I output my FCPX project so that it will play on a 1st generation Apple TV?
    Thanks

    Hi Ben B--
I just remembered to read the article of yours that you linked to last night in your response above ( http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/final-cut/preparing-video-web-quicktime-compresso r ).
It's very informative.  I have Quicktime Pro 7, so I guess between it, Finder, and Compressor I have a lot of options for encoding my video projects.
After reading your article, I do have a few questions:
    1. Do you think the best initial step is to use File>Share>Master File (default)... in FCPX to create a .mov file (that I could then use in the various ways you describe in your article)?
    2. It seems that using the File>Send to Compressor... option in FCPX is a terrible idea as it takes forever.  Do you agree and recommend against using this option?
    3. Do the different methods you describe in your article result in different quality levels?  I know the settings you choose in each method will, of course, greatly affect the video's quality, but is the encoding in the different methods better or worse?  For instance, I'm tempted to think using Compressor is better than Quicktime Pro 7, and both are better than Finder.
    4. Also, are there noticeable differences in the speed of the methods you describe?
The answers to these questions would really help me get on the right track as far as what I should be doing to export my FCPX projects in a way that produces good quality in acceptable amount of time.

  • How do I set up imessage on my daughters 1st Generation ipod touch?

My daughter has an ipod touch and would like to be able to text message her friend who also has an ipod.  I am told I need to put imessage on my daughters ipod, but i can't work out how this is done.  Can anyone explain how this is done?

You can upgrade, first you will need to update to Mac OS X 10.6.8 ($19.99) at the Apple Store, then update to Mac OS X 10.8.3  via the app store for $19.99 http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

Can I present a keynote presentation using airplay and Apple TV? How do I set up airplay ?

    Hi Andy,
You can do this reasonably easily.
First up you need to think about how you are going to drive the TV- Your iMac could do it, but a laptop would be easier if you can access one.
Second you need to look at the screen inputs. If it is a flat screen TV it is likely to have at least a VGA connection which you should have a connector to 'out of the box' and it will work much like connecting your mac to a projector would.
If not you'll probably need a connector for your mac that outputs composite (a single RCA connector) or S-Video to connect. You'll need to do this connection and find out the resolution the display supports before the big day (I live in a country with PAL which typically is 720x576). Make the Keynote presso the same resolution and you should be all good. A test drive is essential!

Just as a thought- you could just burn a DVD with the images- it's pretty simple to set up (with transitions) a photo library in iDVD, though a little more tricky if you need the images to appear at certain times.

You are making some progress with setup of wireless network. Apparently there is reliability problem with the wireless connection. Perhaps you want to refer to following Apple support documents and start tweaking parameters in the router to improve the reliability. I used to have third-party routers such as Belkin and Netgear but switched to Apple Airport routers (Time Capsule then Airport Extreme for now) because of incompatibility issues whenever Apple upgrade Mac OS X. But since Apple develops Airplay protocol as alternative to Bluetooth for wireless audio/video streaming (with much better bandwidth) and must be deployed in any wireless network, there is no reason third-party routers not working for Airplay protocol.

  • I have an apple tv 1st generation, and there is a setting for airtunes. can someone tell me what this is and how to use it?

I have an apple tv 1st generation, and there is a setting for airtunes. can someone tell me what this is and how to use it?

I've looked at that, but on my PC, "look for remote speakers connected with airtunes" isn't an option.
The only options I get are "prevent ipods [etc] from syncing automatically" , "warn me when [X %] of the data on this computer will be changed" and "forget all remotes". Its also got a list of backups I have saved, as well as a button to reset sync history.
When I am playing a song, the "airplay" button isn't even visible.
I am sure that the apple tv setting is on as well. Is there anything else you can help me with?

How do I set up AirPlay on my iPad?

You need to connect your iPad either to wifi network with an airplay compatible device present on it (like an Apple TV), or to a Bluetooth Device like speakers, or a hands free system on a car.
Once you do, the iPad will automatically detect the device and present the Airplay button either inside the Music or Videos App, or in the Task bar next to the media player controls.
There is no configuration per se needed on the iPad.  It should automatically start playing on the detected device, but you can specifically set it to by tapping on the Air Play icon and then on the destination where you wish it to play.

How do I set up a second Apple ID to use iCloud?  My office is going to use the iCloud calendar on our PCs and I don't want to use my personal ID.  Thanks for any suggestions.

You really don't want to do that, operate an iPad with 2 different ID's.
I'm presuming you have a work iPad and you want to put some non work bought apps on it. You will have issues, like half the iPad not working while the other half does.
Probably not something you want to explain to your IT department.

Discussions on using purchases from multiple AppleIDs in one iTunes library - https://discussions.apple.com/message/19543804
As I mentioned earlier, the main time when this becomes an issue is if you need to do something involving associating a computer with a particular AppleID.  Careful management of your collection should minimize this situation.
iTunes Store: Associating a device or computer to your Apple ID - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627 -  In connection with, "When you turn on iTunes Match or Automatic Downloads, or when you download past purchases on an iOS device or computer, that device or computer becomes associated with your Apple ID." "Your Apple ID can have up to 10 devices and computers (combined) associated with it. Each computer must also be authorized using the same Apple ID. Once a device or computer is associated with your Apple ID, you cannot associate that device or computer with another Apple ID for 90 days." - Additionally instructions for "Removing an associated device or computer from an Apple ID"
So the first account is really "yours" and you are setting her up with her own account?  It helps to know this because if both are "hers" then there isn't an issue with her having full access to both accounts.  If in 10 years she moves 2000 miles away and she is pretty much independent then you may not want her to have full access to your AppleID just so she can authorize a device.

How do I set up a 2nd Apple id on my iPhone?  I have one on the phone but it is not the main one for iTunes and my computer.  It is just a subset of the info on my computer.
    Thanks

Tap on the Apple ID and scroll down to the bottom to find the sign out button.
It would also be best to backup all files, then erase all data and settings on the phone, finally set it up as new and create the new Apple ID for the phone.
