How do I set up folders in Mail?

How do I set up different folders in my email accounts?  I have a POP account.  I have read that I need an IMAP account but do not understand what that is.  I tried syncing my iPad with my Mac and sending the mail accounts info but this did not work.

With an IMAP or Exchange account, you have the option to store all account mailboxes on the server. In addition to the account's Inbox mailbox - Drafts, Sent, Trash, and Junk. And you can create additional server stored mailboxes with the email client used on your computer for accessing the account or via webmail access for the account using a browser to sort received and sent messages by category. All server stored mailboxes with an IMAP or Exchange account will be available automatically when accessing the account with the iPad's Mail app. In addition, all server stored mailboxes with an IMAP or Exchange account are kept synchronized with the server with each email client used to access the account.
Although new messages received with a POP account can remain on the server, the account's Inbox mailbox is not stored on the server per se and is not kept synchronized with the server as with an IMAP or Exchange account.
Although it is possible to access a POP account with more than one email client, a POP account is designed to be accessed with one email client only for these reasons.

How do I make new folders in mail?

If you are in desperation for folders you could set up an imap account such as Gmail or Hotmail, create whatever folders you want, add the account to your iPad, send the emails you want to categorise to your new email address and manage them from within. You could also consider gradually making the new email address your future one thus eliminating the need to be always forwarding and thus creating duplicates in a sense. Might be a bit clumsy but it is a work around!

  • How do I set up a new mail account on my iMac?

    Hello everyone,
I think I used to have a Mail account however I could not remember the password when I tried to turn it on. I decided to delete the account completely and to start again. How do I set up a new mail account with a new email address and a new password??
I can see how you create a new mail account but it then asks for an email and password so that doesn't help. I really didn't think it would be a hassle!
    Thanks,
    W

You first need to set up a new User Name and Password with your Internet Service Provider (ISP); that is, whoever provides you with Internet access, such as Comcast, AT&T, etc in the US.  Alternately you can go on the Internet and set up a new email Account with a new User Name and Password with a public company such as Google's "Gmail" or Microsoft's "Hotmail".  Once you have set up your new Account with them, THEN you enter that information into Apple's "Mail" for it to send and receive emails for your new outside Account.
    Hope this helps

What do you mean it does on your iPhone?
If you download a new email to your computer and read that mail and then download it to the iPhone it sees it as already read? Then maybe the iPhone is using the Hotmail IMAP system? Not sure.

  • How do I get the folders in Mail to be listed alphabetically?

How do I get the folders in Mail to be listed alphabetically?  When I add a folder it appears at the bottom of the list and I can't drag and drop it in the primary list to its appropriate postion, I can only drag it to subfolder status.

You should create your mail folders on the iCloud server (under ICLOUD in Mail), not locally on your Mac (under ON MY MAC) for them to show up on other devices and at iCloud.com.
Anything stored locally on your Mac only exists on that specific Mac so leave all your mail on the server and organise it there.

The only way to do so is with an IMAP account via server stored mailboxes which must be created with an email client used on your computer or via webmail access for the account using a browser. Once an additional server stored mailbox is created and available on the server, it will also be available on the iPhone automatically.
This is not available with a POP account.

How do I set up an e-mail account to go with iPhoto?

    Applications > Mail
If you haven't set up a mail account, it will probably ask you if you want to set one up, but here's how I do it.
Press command-, and that will take you to preferences.
Up near the top click the "Accounts" tab
Click the plus button that is located at the lower left corner.
Enter your name, email address, and password.
    Click enter then click continue
Set the account type to POP or IMAP. Whichever one you want is fine as long as it works with your email service.
Don't change the next security settings. Click continue.
Enter something for the description. Make sure that the "Use Athentication" checkbox is checked. Enter your password and click continue.
Click continue you might have to go through one of the security settings again. Click continue.
An account summary will come up. Click "Take account online". Then click create.
You have added your account to Mail.

In Mail>Preferences>Accounts tab>Account Information tab - from the 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):' drop-down menu select 'Edit SMTP Server List...', choose the server you want to edit from those listed, click on the Advanced tab. Does that give you the option you're after?

How do I create new folders in mail on IPad and IPhone for saving emails?

You can't do it on the iPad you would need to do it on your computer and the folder will be seen by your account on the iPad and iPhone only if they are IMAP and Exchange accounts. POP accounts are not supported for folders.

That would depend on what kind of email system your company uses and what they will allow to access. Your best source of information would be the IT department.

  • Setting up folders for mail accounts.

Hello all. I am 3 day old mac owner (got a MacBook) and I need some help with Mail.app.
I have two pop accounts set up and all is well but I can't for the life of me figure out how to set up folders in each account for certain types of mail to be placed in. For instance I would like my wife's emails to automagically be placed in it's own folder for said account so I don't have to see or worry about them. Is this possible? I'd like to have folders for bills, family, friends, etc and any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

you would do this through creating folders, and then creating rules. however you have to have distinct attributes for the rules to pic up on.
if i understand correctly you have your pop account and your wifes. if you notice on inbox, there is an arrow next to it, you can drop it down and see each individual account so you dont view them all together.
i would also suggest that maybe you create an entirely different user for your wife, then neither of you would ever have to deal with sorting between each others emails.
to add a folder, there is a plus sign at the lower left hand corner of mail, click it and the location you want to create should be "on my mac," then to set up a rule you go to preferences and then rules, the rules should make sense, but if not just ask.
i realise this may not exactly solve all the issues, but will probably get you at least closer, and then just ask anything else.

  • TS4083 Is there a way or a setting my folders in Mail to automatically update across all devices? if I transfer an email to a folder for follow-up on my PC, my folder in Mail on my iPhone doesn't update until I actually go into the folder and update manua

Is there a way (or a setting) for my individual folders in Mail to automatically update across all devices? For example, if I transfer an email to a folder for follow-up on my PC - say 10th of the following month - the same folder in Mail on my iPhone doesn't update until I actually go into the folder and update manually.  Interestingly though, if I create a new folder on any of my devices they automatically appear on the other devices so it is just the actual contents that I am referring to here.  Appreciate any help or guidance.
    Regards
    Justin

You can turn mail off in the settings but then you can't use it for anything, including the "test" that you want to perform.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Account Name>Mail>Off. That totally turns off the mail account.
As long as mail is turned on and you launch the app, it will look for an download new mail.
