How do I set up imessage on my daughters 1st Generation ipod touch?

My daughter has an ipod touch and would like to be able to text message her friend who also has an ipod.  I am told I need to put imessage on my daughters ipod, but i can't work out how this is done.  Can anyone explain how this is done?

You can upgrade, first you will need to update to Mac OS X 10.6.8 ($19.99) at the Apple Store, then update to Mac OS X 10.8.3  via the app store for $19.99 http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

By updating the iOS on the iPOd.  The 1G can go as high as 3.1.3.  That works with a lot of apps.  But some apps require a higher iOS and/or newer iPod.

You can't. That is the last version for that model, which is a 2nd Generation:
See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • How to wipe a 1st Generation iPod Touch keeping the 2.2.1 software

I want to sell my first generation iPod Touch (have an iPhone now).
I want to wipe all personal data from the iPod, but I want to keep the 2.2.1 software update that I purchased from it.
Not sure how to do it.

    You could restore.
    Page 111 of the manual:
"If you restore, the latest version of iPod touch software is reinstalled, default settings
are restored, and data stored on iPod touch is deleted, including downloaded
applications, songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other
data. In iTunes, you can also restore from a backup without deleting data stored on
    iPod touch.

adapter. Choose General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.”

  • TS1538 I have a 1st generation iPod touch.  It will not let me connect to the iTunes store.  How can I fix this?

We were given this iPod touch from a friend.  Here is what I have done so far.  Reset it back to factor settings.  Added my music.  Set up the wifi through my home internet.  And it keeps telling me that it cannot connect to iTunes.  Don't know what else to do.  Have tried to look on this community for answers and haven't found ones that I haven't tried yet.  I did see somewhere where there was an update for the iPod touch.  It was 4.95 on the iTunes store.  Wondered if that might help.  Don't want to pay for something that won't work.  Thanks!

I would update. You need the update for apps.
