How do I set up Mac Mail?

My main email address is my college address which is a ".edu" address. Can my mac use this address to link my mail? Also, i have no idea what "Account Type", "Description", "Incoming Mail Server" mean. Please help me out and let me know what I need to enter to set up my mail!!

If your college provides wither POP 3 or IMAP access to your account. How do you access your e-mail now?

You need all of those - no one here can provide them - your college network administration will have them and will give them to you IF they allow access to their mail server by outside programs
Account type is either POP3 or IMAP - incoming mail server could be anything and varies depending on the account type - same with other required information

I have been able to sync the internet version of hotmail and my iphone to sync so that if i read a message, it is marked as read on my iphone and vice versa. however, i cannot get the sync to function with the mac mail program. when i open the program it still marks all the messages as unread, despite them already being open and read from either the internet version of hotmail, or from my iphone. does anyone know any ways to fix this? thank you

On the Internet Accounts System prefs choose Add Other account…
Pick Mail account.
On the first page where you enter username and password, hold down the Option key and the Create button will change to Next. Click that with Option held down.
You can then manually create the account.

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)

Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

All server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account will be available automatically when accessing the account with the iPad's Mail app, but you must place any locally stored mailboxes on the server first. If you use the Mail.app on your Mac, select an drag a locally stored mailbox under the iCloud desgination in the Mail.app mailboxes drawer to copy the mailbox to the server with your iCloud account.
