How do I set up multiple Airport Expresses to connect over ethernet for Airtunes only?

I am trying to set up an Airtunes network using an Airport Extreme and three Airport Expresses connected together via ethernet (CAT5 cable). At each Airport Express there will be a speaker setup. I don't need/want internet connectivity on the network, but not sure if it is required for setup or not. I have made this work over wifi, using the Expresses to extend the network, but struggling to get this to work over ethernet.
I would be verry grateful of a step-by-step method to setting this up! I am also looking to set up 6 airport expresses to do the same thing in another location.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info.
I assume that the AirPort Extreme is setup and working at this point.
Work with one AirPort Express at a time to get them all configured, and then you can locate them where they will be needed.
AirPort Setup will configure the Express devices to "extend a wireless network" using Ethernet, so they will be broadcasting the same wireless signal as the AirPort Extreme and provide more wireless signal coverage as well.
I have yet to meet the first person who thought that they had too much wireless coverage, but you would have the option to turn off the wireless on the Express if you wanted. Most users like having extended wireless for their devices.
Temporarily, move an Express close to the AirPort Extreme
Connect a spare Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Express
Power up the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the Airport icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for AirPort Express to appear just under the listing of New AirPort Base Station
Click directly on the AirPort Express
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name that you want to use....example.....Express1.....and click Next
AirPort Setup will configure everything for you. Notice that the message will say that the Express is being set up to extend using Ethernet. When you see the message of setup complete, click Done.
Now you can move the Express to the remote location where it is needed, hook it up to the Ethernet connection there, power up the Express and set up AirTunes on the device.
AirTunes is enabled by default, to other than make the speaker connection, you won't have much to do on that.
Set up other Express devices the same way, except assign a different name to each device....example....Express2, Express3, etc.....to keep things organized.

  • Can multiple Airport Expresses be connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?

I am a big fan of both the Airport Extreme and Airport Express.  In my work environment, I need to create a good quality single wireless network around 2 large aircraft hangars and some offices at the perimeters.  We have a good quality wired Cat5e ethernet network extended between the buildings and offices now.  Is this possible and does it seem like a good practical solution?  I think that 4 or 5 Airport expresses would easily provide good wireless coverage in the needed areas.

Can multiple AirPort Expresses be connected via ethernet to an AirPort Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?
Yes, this will work just fine as long as any individual Ethernet cable run will not exceed much over 330 feet or about 100 meters.

How can I set up mhy Airport Express to extend my Time Capsule wifi wirelessly
Assuming that you have the model A1264 or A1392 version of the Express, it must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule to be able to extend it correctly.
A good general location would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and other area that needs more wireless coverage.
You will use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the Express. An iPhone or iPad could be used as well.
We can provide more help....if you need it....but we'll need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using on your computer....or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to setup the Express.

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

How do I set up an Airport Express as a hard wired wifi accesspoint?

Please check out the following Apple Support article for configuring your routers for a "Roaming" network. In this case the AirPort Express would be connected back to your other wireless router by Ethernet and configured as a bridge. This would effectively make the Express perform as a Wireless Access Point.

  • How do I set up my Airport Express to my Viasat modem, which requires a DHCP connection, without getting a double NAT connection error?

I have an Airport Express connected to a Viasat 4100 satellite modem. This requires a DHCP connection and is connected to my Airport Express by Ethernet. I then have three computers (two running Mavericks and one running Lion) and two IPhone 5s and an Apple Tv on the network. If the Airport Express is set to DHCP and NAT then the network works and I have internet, but the amber light flashes and I have a double NAT error. If I use it in Bridge mode the airport express goes green but I have no internet. How can I set it up so it works properly? If anyone knows could they please give all the settings I shoud use on the Airport Express as I may have left incorrect setting on it whilst trying to fix the problem. I have checked and it has been confirmed that I cannot change any settings on the satellite modem.

Go into AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Express, and click on the "Double-NAT" error. Click Ignore. There's nothing that can be done about the Double-Nat unless you ignore it (no harm) or contact your ISP and get them to change your Modem/Router into Bridge Mode, and even then can't guarantee that you won't get that error.
Again, best thing to do: Ignore the Double-Nat Error.

  • How Do I Set Up My Airport Express From My iPad 2?

I just got an Airport Express and found that I can only set it up from a Mac or PC. Am I missing something? How can I set it up from my iPad 2? I plan on using it for traveling, but don't want to lug a laptop along, only take my iPad. It seems that it would be necessary at times to change configurations on the Airport Express at times when traveling. There are always unexpected things to have to account for. Having an Airport Express setup utility app on the iPad would seem to be a necessity. Could someone provided guidance for an iPad only solution? Can someone from Apple please weigh in? Thanks.

While I am not from Apple, there was a leaked screen shot showing a possible Airport configuration utility in the upcoming iOS5.  As suggested, give feedback to Apple to help ensure that the utility does make it to the final version.
Until then, or if the utility never makes it, then you can get "travel routers" that use web page based configuration just like the typical home routers from Linksys and others.  I have this model from D-Link, which has been replaced by an 802.11n version.  They're small, although the newer one is larger, but still quite portable.

  • How do I set up my Airport Express and not interrupt my TIme Capsule

I have ATT UVerse recently installed and have my Time Capsule Router Behind their installed router. I recently purchased Airport Extreme and want to install it as well so I can connect an older Version of a Sony PS3 which doesn't have bluetooth capability via rj45 since the time capsule is no where close to my PS3. Is there a way to install this Airport Express and not mess up the settings of the Time Capsule?

Hello hbwilli. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Yes. You will want to configure the new 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) as a ProxySTA. In this configuration, the AXn will join the wireless network created by the Time Capsule and share Internet access through its Ethernet port to the PS3.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)

  • How do I hard wire multiple airport expresses with a switch

I have two airport expresses and other hardwired devices.  I am trying to get them wired together for a roaming network not to extend the network, but can't seem to get it to work with a switch.
Here is the setup Modem -> Airport Express -> 5 ports switch -> one of the ports is ran to an airport express.  What I'm trying to determine is if the airport device needs to be physically plugged in to the other airport to create a roaming network or can it be ran through a switch. Notice the dotted line vs the solid line.  Now obviously because I found the picture on the internet, I only have two devices not 3.
    Here is mine:
Here is what i'm trying accomplish. (Image from: http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=345142&d=1340677218)

If you have a simple modem.....then you must connect the modem directly to an AirPort....then connect the switch to the AirPort and then connect other AirPorts and devices to the switch. So, it would look like this:
Internet > Simple Modem > AirPort > Switch > Other Devices
If you have a modem/router or gateway type of device.....then you can connect the switch to the modem/router or gateway.....and then connect the AirPorts to the switch. In this case, things would look like this:
Internet > Modem/Router (Gateway) > Switch > AirPorts and other Devices
So, before we go further with this, it is important to understand what type of modem that you have, as it will dictate what you can and cannot do on the network.
What is the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem"?

  • Why won't my old iMac G4 recognize my Airport Express when connected with ethernet cable?

After I installed an Airport Extreme as a base station for my network, the G4 couldn't recognize either the Airport Express or the Airport Extreme unless it was connected by ethernet cable to the Airport Extreme - then both devices show up in the G4 utility. I have reset the Airport Express to factory settings many times and the Utility in my iMac 3.2 Ghz Intel Core 13 indicates that the Airport Express is working. Any ideas?

I suspect its to do with the WPA setup support changes.  My very old G3 seemed to have the same issue of not able to connect to Extreme or Express.  Used to connect before years back to Apple routers but refused to in recent time for reasons not explainable so I just connect it now via cable.

  • How can I set up my airport express to extend my current wifi network? My current network does not use any airport device.

    Can anyone help me?

The only option would be to connect the AirPort to your existing network by wire. Most, if not all non-AirPort routers, will not be WDS compatible.
