How Do I set up TC to extend an existing wi-fi network?

I have a 3 TB Time Capsule that I would like to use to extend an existing wi-fi network from my main ADSL wi-fi router.  Airport utility option under Wireless, Network Mode is set to "Extend a wireless network."  Wireless network Name and passwords are correct.  Clicking update, I get a yellow light on the status of the wireless network.
Is there a setting on my ADSL wireless router that needs to be enabled in order for the TC to pick up the signal and extend the range?

You need to have Apple airport module, I had same issue, you can only create new wifi network (which you dont want) or there is another option you should consider (join my existing network) which will help you to further access TC on wireless.
I have spent few hours on last weekend, and even with Apple support team, they told apple TC does not support tird party routers to extend your wireless network.
you can see my other thread to find out how to join existing nw. you need Aiport utility 5.6
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
and hold Option on mac to get this option,
see this thread for detail info.

How do I extend my existent Airport Extreme network by addition of a 2nd Airport Extreme?

Can you clarify which version of the AirPort Extreme that you have now along with the model that you plan to use as the second device?
The older "round" AirPort Exteme or the newer "square" version with rounded corners?
Are you planning to extend using wireless only.....or by connecting the AirPort Extremes using a wired Ethernet connection?

  • How do I set up a video conference with 2 on same network and 3rd remote

I have a .Mac account with two computers on the same home network. My wife has an iSight camera on her iMac which she video chats (using my .Mac Acct) with our daughter in another city on her MacBook Pro (she too has a .Mac acct).
I would like to join in on the video chat with my camera (different room, but on the same network with my wife).
My internet connection is Comcast (360kb up and 8000 down).
    How would I do this.

    Hi Scott,
OK first make sure all people have an AIM name or @mac screen name. That is one each and no shares or Alias @mac accounts. http://www.siriusaddict.com//ichat.html
Make sure all have set the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5mbps.
If the Mac Firewalls are On, make sure the iChat ports are set as per these instructions:
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html second pic
Make sure the modem with the two computers has Port Triggering or UPnP enabled to allow multiple computers to use the ports at the same time. It will not work with Port Forwarding or DMZ as these point to One IP Address.
If the ports at the remote modem are open or they are using UPnP you should now be good to go.

  • How can I set up airport extreme using my existing 11.g router

My existing router (ZyXEL - supplied by Telefonica with my land line) is an 11.g type and does not allow me to use iPad/iPod in certain areas of my home.  Yesterday I bought an Airport Extreme and was told that I could either connect my existing router's ADSL line directly into the Extreme and connect to my Mac and other peripherals using USB or ethernet cable, or connect from the existing router.
I tried each method using Airport Utility in each case and also trying the different options offered in the set-up.  It doesn't seem to want to work.
    Can anyone help me please.

Further to my earlier (and first) posting, I have been playing with the airport extreme and it now works via my existing router but, it's range is less than 15 metres and that is no better than my existing 11.g router.
Does anyone know how I can increase this range?
p.s. any help in the simplest terms please.

  • How do I set up Time Machine to work with an Iomega network hard drive?

I have just bought a new iMac having switched from Windows, and am very much a beginner when it comes to all things Apple. Previously I had used my NAS hard drive with my old windows pc. i successfully used it to transfer a lot of data from the old pc to the iMac but can't seem to get it recognised when I try to configure time machine. I have downloaded the latest version of Iomega Home storage manager which appears in the application folder in the dock, but when I click on The HSM icon it just disappears and nothing happens. I can access the drive through the Bonjour service and can see its contents in Finder. I have looked through the forums here but much of the info assumes a level of knowledge that i don't have. Is there an 'idiot's guide' anywhere to enable me to set up time machine to use the network hard drive?

You would probably benefit from a couple of things, first going through these 2 links

If you still have questions there is a TM forum, because TM is part of OS X you will find the forum in the Snow Leopard forum. Click Apple Support Communities and in the search field type Snow Leopard. Once you are in the correct forum you can narrow your search by clicking Refine this list.

  • How does one use airport express to extend a non-Apple wifi network?

Hello. The wifi signal reaching my room shows good on my macbook but weak on my ipod touch. Therefore I want to pick it up on my airport express and extend/boost it.
I have tried everything in the auto and manual methods of setup to do this, but the only thing I can manage to do is to join a wireless network wirelessly and then then connect to it through a ethernet cable from my airport express. I want to pick it up wirelessly and extend it wirelessly - is this possible? This is the reason why I bought it!
    thanks a lot, JJ

Thanks for that info. So, I have been trying to use my airport express n to extend an airport n network (for greater distance of coverage) and cannot get this to work either. I can join the other apple airport's network and then connect to the airport express by cable. I have tried all the help available here but that seems to be the only way to extend a network. But I cannot see any point in that! JJ

  • How can you set up 2 p2011w printers on the same wireless network?

Ii tried renaming one, but that didn't work. We had one, it works great, my boss loved it and bought another. Now we're all printing in his office because the one he got for us doesn't work. Any ideas?

Do a factory reset on your TC.
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec.
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Plug the LAN port of the BT router to the WAN port of the TC.
Start the airport utility in a computer and allow it to complete..
It should choose the right setup without intervention.. but you can then make sure of it.
So go to the edit tab by clicking on the TC in airport utility.
Then check the network tab shows off (bridge mode).
Go to the wireless tab and set a useful and simple and short wireless name.
You could even then click on the wireless options on that page and set a different name for 5ghz wireless.

  • How do I set up a 4620 office jet on an airport network with only an iPad?

I only have an iPad and set up airport network no problem, but HP office jet 4620 printer won't connect without wps or computer. Any ideas?

    Hi Neil1950,
You will be doing this wirelessly without the need for a cable. From the iPad Settings icon, click on Wi-Fi>Network>Select the printer's network to connect using the same steps listed above.
    After your iPad is connected,
    1. Open Safari in the iPad and enter 192.168.223.1in the addressbar and press enter.
    2. Navigate to the WIreless Setup Wizard to setup your printer on your network.
    3. Follow the steps to join your printer on the network.

  • How do I set up my time capsule as an internal only network.

I currently have a time capsule that was attached via ethernet cable to my wireless router (Brighthouse network) and worked fine with Time Machine.
I want to disconect it from the router (no connection  via ethernet cable or wireless) and configure it to be a separate network I can connet to and use to access the Time Capsule hard drive.  So I want to establish a wirless base station that creates a new internal only network, not connected to the internet, that gives me access to the hard drive using Time Capsule.
I recognize that when I connet to the Timne Capsule in this configuration I would have to select it and would not be conected to the other wireless network at my house or to the internet.
    Thanks for the help

Just take the TC and reset to factory..
Setup again with no WAN connection.. but leave the TC in router mode.. it will kick up a bunch of errors about having no WAN connection.. just ignore them all.
Create a wireless network.. try and use an IP address range not used by your main network.. just to help stop confusion.
When you swap between the two it should be able to work fine.

  • What routers other than apple routers can i use to extend my existing time capsule network?

i have an existing time capsule wifi network already in place. i need to extend the network wirelessly without the use of an ethernet cable. what i am wondering is therte a cheaper router other than the airport express that will do this?? your prompt responce is greatly appreciated

what i am wondering is therte a cheaper router other than the airport express that will do this??
Have tested many products and many brands, and have yet to find a 3rd party device...including so called "universal" repeaters....that will actually extend an Apple network wirelessly.
You may have better luck than me if you have unlimited time and the store will allow you to return multiple products that do not work.
If you do find one that actually will extend the network, please let us know.

  • My airport express connects then it drops off i am trying to set it up to extend my wifi, what am i doing wrong?

I can get it to recognize it, then it drops off. I am just trying to extend my wifi through out the house. I understand that there can be some interference from other things in the house. What else am i not doing?  Thanks

Here is what the AirPort Express literature says. I have underlined the point that the Apple folks should have told you about:
Extend an existing Wi-Fi network’s range.
If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express — and near the area where you want your wireless connection

  • Better to create or extend my existing network? (Time Capsule, Express, AppleTV with wireless modem internet)

We have Optus ADSL broadband (Australia) running wireless via a 'Sagemcom F@ST 3864 Optus' modem. We have an Airport Time Capsule (for backup) and an Airport Express (for music connection) and Apple TV.
I currently have the Time Capsule (Express & TV) set up as their own network, sharing the internet from the Optus wireless network. Is creating a new network like this the best scenario? Or is it better to extend the existing Optus wireless network? Besides extension for range/reception, does either option have particular benefits over the other?
Other than internet, we just stream music/movies from laptops & phones to speakers/TV, so the thinking behind creating a new network rather than extending, was based on the assumption that the Time Capsule may be better at data transfer than the modem?
    Any thoughts would be great!

Is creating a new network like this the best scenario? Or is it better to extend the existing Optus wireless network? Besides extension for range/reception, does either option have particular benefits over the other?
I would say it is about 50-50.. 6 of one .. half a dozen of the other.
Any scenario you dream up has a set of good points and bad points.
    So some factors.
    1. I presume you have the TC plugged by ethernet into the Sagem modem.. bridged and creating its own network.. using two different network names keeps the local connection load contained which is good thing.
Wireless is fundamentally poor. It has limits on being only able to handle a single client at a time.. so time slicing between all the clients. plus it is half duplex.. which is simply it can either transmit or receive not both.
In comparison, Ethernet via modern switches.. can have multiple computers talking to each other at once and can both tx and rx, ie full duplex. So using extend wireless is very bad. It means wireless is much slower as each packet is double handled.
Using multiple APs connected back by ethernet to a main router is definitely the right way to go. They can be in roaming or setup with completely different names.. that is almost irrelevant. It is easier though to manage when you do the naming and setup so you specifically allocate load.
For example.. if the TC is doing backups from TM on the computers and you start having streaming issues with the Apple TV, split the load, by naming the 2.4ghz and 5ghz differently in the TC.. and force backups to 5ghz and streaming to 2.4ghz (or visa versa depending on range issues etc.).
    2. Network wise different AP should all live happily together in one happy family. The reality is that more equipment leads to more issues. I have been hitting a few issues lately with wireless routers exactly in your setup being unavailable to the network, if a computer happens to be connected to the wrong router.
For example a computer connected to the Sagem, whether by wireless or ethernet, may have issues backing up to the TC. It shouldn't but it does. I am seeing Mavericks in particular giving strife this way.
Someone recently posted a very helpful article on why this is happening.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5863043?tstart=0
For most people in a home network you do not want the hassle of running a server. But you can see that sometimes things start getting complicated.
Best principle is hope for the best.. set it up as per what you have done.. if it bombs or is unstable.. work back through the issues.. there are some alternative configurations which are more complicated.. eg running the TC with static IP, that seems to alleviate some of the bugs.
    3. What works is best. Whatever the theory.. try a few setups.. what you setup that works well for you is the best even if the theory says no.. that is bad.
eg One post a person used roaming network with all AP's fixed to the same channel, so the idevices would roam properly. This is wrong.. but works.. normal roaming network laptops seem to be able to roam well but idevices do not. Pick what works.

How can I set up mhy Airport Express to extend my Time Capsule wifi wirelessly
Assuming that you have the model A1264 or A1392 version of the Express, it must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule to be able to extend it correctly.
A good general location would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and other area that needs more wireless coverage.
You will use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the Express. An iPhone or iPad could be used as well.
We can provide more help....if you need it....but we'll need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using on your computer....or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to setup the Express.
